About Mo Hillstrand

I inherited this property and built Laughing Raven in 2000 from logs harvested from the Kenai Peninsula. I'm a neurology nurse practitioner and work in Anchorage but plan on retiring to Homer. In the meantime I'd like to share my home with individuals who wish to have an unforgettable Alaskan adventure.

Mo Hillstrand purchased this house in 2000

Why Mo Hillstrand chose Homer

I built Laughing Raven on property that was an original Alaskan homestead. I spent my summers as a child playing on the Homer Spit. Laughing Raven is conveniently located 3 miles from the center of Homer on 20 private forested acres with spectacular views and very comfortable accommodations.

What makes this house unique

You can sit by the fire place and plan many out-doors activities Homer has to offer. You can also just relax on the decks or in the hot tub and just enjoy the scenic views and observe the wild life.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Thank you for the opportunity to stay at your beautiful home these past few days. It was truely a relaxing time. We even had some 'special' visitors- a mama moose and her calf ! Thank you again. We hope to return sometime. Sincerely, Karen"

Private and relaxing

  • 5 of 5
Four of us stayed at Laughing Raven in early August '14 for four nights. Nice, clean log home with lots of windows located on a large, private lot with no neighbors in sight. Large, functional kitchen, two large living areas, and a huge wrap-around deck with a hot tub. Outstanding view of Cook Inlet and K-bay from the bluff just uphill from the house. We brought our boat down and had plenty of room to turnaround and store the trailer in the driveway. The owner (Mo) is very professional and a pleasure to do business with. We will stay again in the future.

What a marvelous property! It's a beautifully designed and constructed luxurious log home in a great location. We and another couple were celebrating our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed exploring Homer Spit and Ketchimak park from this home, while also seeing Mama Moose and her twins come through the yard, along with three other moose at other times. Would definitely return. Our only disappointment was the view from the house itself across the water wasn't what we thought..that breathtaking view was from the cleared area 100 feet away overlooking Sterling Hwy. still, 5 stars!

Thanksgiving in Homer

  • 5 of 5
What a wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving with our extended family of 8 on a getaway in Homer! The house is gorgeous and extremely comfortable, very close to downtown by car, and the views from the homestead are beautiful. Never been in a better stocked kitchen in a rental, either. It was a very cold weekend, but the fireplaces were fully stocked with dry wood and ready to go. The views of the stars from the hot tub were amazing. Thank you, Laughing Raven!
The log home and vaulted ceiling construction allows for sound to go through the house pretty freely, so the group needs to be on a similar schedule or be able to stay quiet if someone else is sleeping (or bring ear plugs like I did). There are also a lot of stairs, including up to the main level from the entrance.

OVER THE TOP

  • 5 of 5
I can't say enough about this property. I'd rate it 6 stars if I could. This is my second visit to the Laughing Raven and again it exceeded my expectations. It is clean clean clean. Excellent condition and the artwork, decorations and amenities are superb. There are 3 bedrooms with big comfy beds with clean and luxurious bedding! A beautiful loft with a large TV and DVD player and movies and open out sofa. Stereo system downstairs that is wired throughout the home. You can plug your iphone into the auxillary jack and have your music, But there is a nice selection of CD's. Floor to Ceiling Windows offering an incredible view from the living areas. Awesome hot tub on the deck complete with hot tub towels. A nice Weber Grill, firewood, two fireplaces, a gourmet kitchen with everything you need! Bathrooms that sparkle and imagine a steam shower! The views are beautiful from every window. Sit on the grass overlook and watch the sun set over Katchemak Bay with all the glaciers and homer spit and you'll feel on top of the world. Then hop in the hot tub for relaxation after Halibut Fishing... then light the fire at night and enjoy your fresh catch... you won't find a nicer place with all these amenities in all of Homer. We had Momma Moose and her calf in the driveway coming home from dinner. I was surprised to see how many previous guests (from guest book) had seen them. This property is very close to town maybe 5 minutes if you go slow? And it takes only 10 to get to the spit. Easy Easy. The owner, Mo is fantastic to work with and makes sure you have all your needs met. Very easy to deal with. Don't miss out on this place and book it without worries. You will not be disappointed.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5
Not enough superlatives to describe this place. Luxurious, spacious log cabin close to Homer but feel of the Alaska woods. Between the wonderful fireplace and the Moose family walking through the yard on the first morning we almost didn't want to leave the house. I would go back in a heart beat. Do be aware that Homer starts to shut down after Labor Day and is really dead within 2 weeks. Beyond that, the location is great for fishing Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Pennisula, float plane to Katmai Natl Park for communing with the brown bears, sea kayaking, water taxi to hike in Kachemak State park and lots of good restaurants.

Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5
We had such a wonderful stay! The house is beautiful, in a perfect location, quiet, warm, comfortable, and fully stocked. We were fortunate to have sunny days for most of our stay which just added to our enjoyment. We saw a mother and baby moose in the yard when we arrived, and saw them again on one other day. We enjoyed watching eagles fly over while relaxing in the hot tub. The house is close to a grocery store and to the Homer spit. Our excursions from the spit were fantastic. Our highlight was a bear viewing trip with Alaska Bear Adventures. It was truly amazing seeing so many bears including a cub. We loved the bay and seeing sea otters and harbor seals swimming around. We enjoyed a hike to Glacier Lake. We had fabulous meals at the Saltry in Halibut Cove and Two Sisters Bakery. One of our favorite activities was tide pooling on the beach. We saw so many sea stars and even had a peek at an octopus. The drive from the house to the spit just got more beautiful each day. Homer is truly an amazing place and Laughing Raven just made it even more special. Mo was a pleasure to work with. We hope we are lucky enough to return again sometime.
