Bracey House Rental Photos and Description

Lake House, 5 Bedrooms + Loft, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 14-17)

Relax at your own Great Escape on beautiful Lake Gaston! This lake house is in a protected cove for your kids to play with minimal boat traffic. Outside your quiet cove, you have 1.5 miles of an awesome cove to ski, wakeboard and fish. You also have a covered dock and boat lift. At most rentals, you will need to leave your nice ride in the water and out in the rain!

This lake house is a 2600 square foot, one and a half story contemporary home over a finished walkout basement. There are 5 bedrooms, 1 loft sleeping area and 4 full baths.

Bedroom configurations are:

Master Suite #1 - Upper level master has king bed, gas fireplace, balcony, office desk and full private bath.

Master Suite #2 - Main level master bedroom has queen bed and private bath.

Bedroom #3 - Main level guest bedroom has a queen bed.

Bedroom #4 - Lower level guest bedroom has a queen bed.

Bedroom #5 - Lower level bedroom with 2 bunk beds (4 twin beds).

Loft - Upper level has loft with 2 twin beds (over looking kitchen/great room).

Main level great room has 10 chair dining table convenient with kitchen and large deck overlooking lake. The kitchen has new stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops. New for 2014 is a Hi Def flat screen TV with sound bar and blue ray player. The deck has both a Weber gas grill and a Weber charcoal grill.

Lower level Family room has gas fireplace, wet bar and a full bath. New for 2014 is flat screen, Hi Def TV and blue ray player in family room with whole home DVR service. Outside the lower level is a ping pong table on the patio.

The home has a large yard with plenty of parking and playground for the kids. There is a gently sloping walkway to the covered double boathouse with one lift for renter, sundeck, jet ski lift and paddle boat for renter. The dock also has a guest slip to allow you to bring 2 boats plus a jet ski. The paved parking lot has a basketball hoop.

The Great Escape is located on Great Creek in the northwest quadrant of Lake Gaston. The home is a 10 minute drive from I-85. Great winery and golf only a few miles away.

What is the water skiing like in Great Creek? The creek is protected from the main lake by a no wake zone and box culvert. That keeps many of the main lake yahoos out of our 'private' creek. With 1.5 mile run, it makes a perfect spot for slalom skiing and wakeboarding. It's not uncommon to see some barefooting and great slalom skiing in the mornings. The jet skis and tubes generally don't come out until 11:00 AM.

How is the fishing in Great Creek? The fishing is pretty good right from the dock at the home. Bream (Blue Gill) and catfish are easy to catch from the dock. We also have large mouth bass all around the docks in the creek. There are many bass tournaments that run out of the nearby Holly Grove Marina and many of the fishermen tell me our cove is as good as any at holding large mouth 'keepers'. The main lake offers a variety of good fishing spots including large grass fields as you head up into the river.

How is the boat traffic in Great Creek? During the week is generally good throughout the day. The weekends in the summer can get busy in the creek between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM. When it gets too much boat traffic to ski or wakeboard, you can get into calm water in the river in about 20 minutes. Going out of Great Creek and heading north, you enter the river portion of Lake Gaston. The river offers miles of calm water, straight runs and deep water (26 feet). Since the water comes from the bottom of Kerr Lake, the water is cool which is refreshing in the heat of the summer. Deep, cool water as calm as butter is awesome for skiing and boarding.

Lake Gaston is one of the truly superior lakes in the country, located in the piedmont area of northern NC and southern VA. It covers 20,300 acres, 34 miles long, and has over 350 miles of shoreline. The lake has very little water level fluctuation year round and has the highest water-quality rating in eastern USA (NC Stream Sanitation Commission, A2 rating). Lake Gaston is well stocked with game fish including striped and largemouth bass, bream, crappie, sunfish, and several varieties of catfish. Lake Gaston has an average depth of 40+ feet (~80+ ft. deep near eastern end at dam).

About Pete Mulligan

I am an IT manager in the Pharmaceutical services industry.

Pete Mulligan purchased this house in 2003

Why Pete Mulligan chose Bracey

Our family loves the lake life. We rented house boats and homes on different lakes in Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. We fell in love with Lake Gaston with the large number of secluded coves for great skiing and constant water level. The boat houses are awesome with power, water and boat lifts. Our location is convenient to I-85 which avoids long drives through tiny country towns and their tourist speed traps. You can't beat the lake life on Lake Gaston at the Great Escape!

What makes this house unique

I enjoy the early morning ski runs on glassy smooth water. Being on the calm water side of Lake Gaston's bridge culverts is crucial. I also enjoy the evenings on the deck looking out onto the lake and woods with tikki torches, fire, glass of wine and the company of my beautiful wife. Life doesn't get much better than that!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you again and again! We enjoyed each day of our stay at "The Great Escape". This is our first year staying in VA. We usually stay closer to Littleton but really liked it hear as well. When the lake got too crowded, we just headed up river!

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5
We loved spending the weekend at Lake Gaston. What a beautiful home that was stocked with everything we needed. The view is great and to be able to lay out on the top deck of the dock on an overly-sunny end of September weekend was a treat! The owner went out of his way to accommodate a late check out, ensure internet was up and running (when he noticed it was out a few days before our arrival) and he even changed the tv package to include a football game the whole family wanted to watch! We will definitely be going back as it was a great place to fit my parents, all five daughters and their significant others (+one grand baby). Memories were made and we can't wait to make more!

This house was a disappointment to us on our recent stay at the lake. It has lot of beds, but was not nicely appointed, so it did not have the feel of a vacation property. The living room and basement are filled with VERY old and heavily worn furniture. The upholstery was very dusty and gave most people in our party allergy problems. The provided blankets were also very old and dusty. There is a ping pong table but all of the ping pong paddles are so broken they can't even be used.

The only positive of this house is the proximity to the lake and the good-sized paved driveway with basketball hoop.

Owner's Response: I assume this traveler is upset about the cost to fix the damage his teenagers caused to one of our bar stools. I ask all travelers to contact me immediately if there are any issues with the home. We certainly could have run over more ping pong paddles and clean blankets. We have added more paddles and have cleaned all blankets. We are also planning to replace the furniture in the family room in spring 2014.
After his stay I requested his feedback and he replied with (before the damage was discovered): "Thanks so much, we had a great weekend. Weather was great. We appreciated your thorough instructions on how to use the house and the surrounding area...". He did not mention any of the issues in his negative review.
After checkout, my cleaner reported an 8 inch tear in one of the bar stool seats. I am truly sorry that this renter is so upset over the cost that was required to repair the damage his teenagers caused. My wife and I worked very hard to find someone who could re-upholster the seat and we did not charge him for our time or mileage. We only deducted the actual cost of the repair from his security deposit. The basement bar stool has now been repaired.
To avoid future similar issues, travelers may opt to purchase $1500 worth of damage insurance for only $49. Please inquiry for more information.

  • 5 of 5
Our family of 11 enjoyed The Great Escape for Thanksgiving for the second straight year. Owner very accommodating and the place was in excellent condition. New kitchen updates including granite countertops, stove and frig. Also, new big screen tv added since last year. Plenty of room inside and outside. Kids played basketballs, ping pong, football, swings, etc. kitchen table seated all of us comfortably.

Great place to stay with a large family gathering. Throughly enjoyed the house which was spacious and clean. Being on an inlet was great as it provided a wonderful place for the kids to swim, boat and fish (fishing was great!) without worrying about boat traffic. Plenty of parking and room for games and plenty of dishes, glassware and silverware. Kahill's is a fabulous restaurant in South Hill, well worth the 15 minute drive.

Our Great Escape on Lake Gaston

  • 5 of 5
This was our third trip to Gaston, the first on the Virginia side of the lake. The Great Escape is just that, a Great Escape. There are many conditions that a house must meet for our group to consider renting it, most important was the size. The home fit all of the 3 vacationing families (adults & teens) with room to spare. The lower area was great for the teens while the more mature took to the back deck. The dock gave us a great spot to launch our daily activities or just hang out in the creek on tubes. The water just outside the creek is smooth as glass. The boys had the jet ski's going faster than I've seen them go before! The sun deck was the right spot for cocktails in the evening until we move to the house deck for dinner prep and great meals. I would recommend this home to anyone with a large gathering!

The home owner is a great individual who responded quickly to our questions prior to renting and followed up after our week was over. The home is clean, inviting and had everything we could want for a week of relaxation on the lake. Though there are neighbors on either side, the home is surrounded by trees so you'll never know they are there. There is a great launch site just down the street for your boat or jet ski and a basketball court to work up a sweat. For the occasional check in with work and all the teens connecting devices, the Wi-Fi was a great feature. Also has one of the best refrigerators on the lake! Kept everything cold all the time (sounds silly, but an overworked fridge can ruin a house).

All in all, the price is right, location is great, the lake is beautiful and the house was fantastic. Rent the Great Escape for your next vacation at Lake Gaston, I don't think you'll be sorry. My only complaint? I wish I was a permanent resident!

Perfect Thanksgiving Retreat

  • 5 of 5
Our family met at the Great Escape for Thanksgiving 2012 and had a fantastic time. Each of our four grandchildren caught a catfish from the dock (4 yr old Luke's fish was a 20 inch whopper). Each evening we had a fire in the deck fireplace and told stories with hot dogs and marshmallows. The kitchen was perfect for our turkey dinner and the table sat all 10 of us comfortably.
