About Mary Jo

My husband and I found the cabin in 2000, it had been neglected for over 20 years. As a general contractors ,my husband, Don had a vision of what the old 1930's cabin could become. We added glass tile back splash in the kitchen, granite counter tops, refinished the original hardwood floors and added comfortable furnishings, all the amenities you need to have a wonderful vacation.

Mary Jo purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Mary Jo chose Palomar Mountain

I have been traveling to Palomar Mountain since I was a child. My family camped at the State Park every year. The State Park has great hiking trails. My family was so happy when we bought the cabin, now we will be able to have family reunions on the mountain again.

Our cabin is situated in the back country of Palomar on 3 acres, very quiet, great for naps and bird watching. I'm sure you will enjoy our cabin and the Mountain as we have for many years.

What makes this cabin unique

Our cabin is located off the main paved road on a private dirt road. Our dirt road has been regraded and surfaced. I drive a Volvo S40 and have no problem getting in and out(always drive slowly on dirt roads). If you are coming to stay in Nov. you should have an all wheel or 4 wheel drive, just in case it rains or you get some snow. Our property is off the beaten track and that is why people enjoy it. The Cabin is a Very Quiet place to be. While you are there enjoy Hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, deers walk thru the property, watching the stars at night of the deck, worm yourself in front of the wood burning stove, travel up the the historic Palomar Mountain Observatory (Hale Telescope)

Review #6487259 Perfect get away from it all cabin

LOVED your cabin! This is the perfect romantic cabin in the woods. We did take our 2 boys and our 2 dogs with us, but this would be ideal for a special weekend for two. I loved cooking on the Viking range and enjoyed sitting out on the deck in the mornings...The bed was very comfortable and the overall cabin was very well restored...tub was awesome! We are already planning a return trip when the weather will be colder so we can use the woodstove. Thanks for opening your home to guests and their dogs! Johanna

Great little place!

  • 4 of 5

We were really impressed with the level of care Don and Mary Jo put into the updating and maintenance of this cabin. We came up for a long weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We brought our two dogs as well, and they were in heaven! We used the grill every day. The bed was comfy and all the appliances/decor have been updated. We had a hiccup with the doorknob to the deck not working, but the owners came up literally the next day to fix it. Spectacular service! The only problem we had was that the internet was not functional. Normally I would not have cared (as the whole point of going up to the mountains is to getaway), but I had some homework to finish and submit by the end of the weekend. It was a little inconvenient to go hunting around for internet access.

Overall, a great time! Thanks again!

Perfect Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This is the best cabin we ever stayed in. It was so clean and had more than everything we needed. The owners were wonderful in communicating with us before and after the stay and the directions made it very easy to find the cabin. The cabin is in the best location too! We walked in the forest surrounding the cabin all day and had a wonderful time! The only thing is that we didn't stay long enough. We definitely didn't want to leave! We have found our vacation spot and can't wait to come back. Thank you for such a perfect vacation in your lovely cabin!

One of my top four getaways.

  • 5 of 5

We never left the property although we intended to go to Palomar and do some hiking, it was not necessary. Can't wait to go back as soon as our schedules permit. Loved cooking in kitchen. My husband is a General Contractor and was impressed with the improvements and quality of the work. I am a writer and the views were inspiring. I had been sick a couple of days before the trip and I did not check my email for the map the Mary Jo sent. You will need it, but we called and she stayed on the phone until cell service was disrupted after we reach the gate but told how to get there the short way from there. It was all part of the adventure.

Secluded Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely perfect! Very quiet and refreshing! Wonderful views and cozy living spaces! We enjoyed listening to the birds and feeling the suns warmth on the deck. We also loved playing dominoes next to the fireplace and making meals in the beautiful kitchen; the bathroom was equally stunning. We explored around the cabin and found amazing trees, birds and small animals. We were sad to leave but will return soon!

Quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was the second time up to the cabin and we loved it even more! Thanksgiving day the turkey in the Viking oven smelled amazing, kids happy-happy, dogs in Disneyland and it was definitely one of the best holidays we've spent as a family. My son spotted several new birds to add to his Life list. Beds are very comfortable, kitchen is small but completely awesome, and the tub...deep soaking tub perfect after a day in the forest. In fact we are going to put that type in our own home. Highly recommend. Thank you for opening your home to us

Great Location

  • 5 of 5

The Falling Cedar Cabin is in a great location. It is surrounded by trees and feels very remote. Perfect for a quiet getaway. The inside is very comfortable and cozy. We would love to return sometime in the future.

There are many hiking trails on Palomar Mountain and around our cabin. You can go Fishing at Done Pond in the national park with a fishing license. The hiking is endless in the park. The Palomar Observatory is perhaps the world's most famous astronomical observatory. Since the 1930's it has been, and continues to be, a center of astronomical research.

Be sure to visit the Observatory.
