About Mary Jo

My husband and I found the cabin in 2000, it had been neglected for over 20 years. As a general contractors ,my husband, Don had a vision of what the old 1930's cabin could become. We added glass tile back splash in the kitchen, granite counter tops, refinished the original hardwood floors and added comfortable furnishings, all the amenities you need to have a wonderful vacation.

Mary Jo purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Mary Jo chose Palomar Mountain

I have been traveling to Palomar Mountain since I was a child. My family camped at the State Park every year. The State Park has great hiking trails. My family was so happy when we bought the cabin, now we will be able to have family reunions on the mountain again.

Our cabin is situated in the back country of Palomar on 3 acres, very quiet, great for naps and bird watching. I'm sure you will enjoy our cabin and the Mountain as we have for many years.

What makes this cabin unique

Our cabin is located off the main paved road on a private dirt road. Our dirt road has been regraded and surfaced. I drive a Volvo S40 and have no problem getting in and out(always drive slowly on dirt roads). If you are coming to stay in Nov. you should have an all wheel or 4 wheel drive, just in case it rains or you get some snow. Our property is off the beaten track and that is why people enjoy it. The Cabin is a Very Quiet place to be. While you are there enjoy Hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, deers walk thru the property, watching the stars at night of the deck, worm yourself in front of the wood burning stove, travel up the the historic Palomar Mountain Observatory (Hale Telescope)

Review #6487259 Perfect get away from it all cabin

LOVED your cabin! This is the perfect romantic cabin in the woods. We did take our 2 boys and our 2 dogs with us, but this would be ideal for a special weekend for two. I loved cooking on the Viking range and enjoyed sitting out on the deck in the mornings...The bed was very comfortable and the overall cabin was very well restored...tub was awesome! We are already planning a return trip when the weather will be colder so we can use the woodstove. Thanks for opening your home to guests and their dogs! Johanna

Celebrating a birthday

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just stayed at the cabin for the weekend. He's from Maine and immediately felt at home! Setting is very private and quiet- all you hear are the birds! Our dog had a great time on the property and was very safe to be off-leash. Cabin is very nicely appointed and details in the finishings are professional- kitchen is stunning! It is a luxury cabin in the woods!
Cabin has all the ammenities you need including towels, linens, dishes, pots, pans, cleaning supplies, etc.
Thank you again for a great stay and we look forward to our next trip to the mountains!

Great Weekend Escape

  • 5 of 5
Falling Cedar Cabin is a wonderful retreat. A unique, wooded setting in Southern California. We hiked at Palomar State Park and had plans to tour the Hale Telescope/Caltech Palomar Observatory, but it was randomly closed while we were there. Not a problem, we will likely be back soon to see this area in the fall.

One note to potential lodgers: luckily we brought a vehicle with a higher clearance . . . the last mile is rough/bumpy dirt road, which we think may have bottomed out a car with a lower clearance (or perhaps not . . .)

Great time! Thanks!

Owner's Response: We are very happy that you enjoyed our little cabin I the woods!
We hope you will come back again.

The last part of the road to our cabin is dirt and uneven, a sorts car or similar undercarriage would not be advised. I have a Volvo 240SI and I don't don't have a problem.

Awesome cabin!

  • 5 of 5
Our family stayed at the cabin and it frankly spoiled us. It had everything we needed and the craftsmanship of the cabin's renovation was fantastic. Everything is new and up to date, yet simple and not distracting from its amazing surroundings. The birds were a hyper bunch that loved the trees all around the cabin and didn't mind being spied on from the perfect deck in the mornings. A great getaway indeed!!:)

Comfy, luxurious cabin retreat

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for a weekend couples retreat. It was quite the trek up the mountain! Finding the place was fun, because there were picture directions for the private roads just before the house. We were worried it was going to be hard, but it was no problem at all. Upon arriving, we were pleasantly surprised to find the house was quite secluded. There are neighbors nearby, but not within sight. I loved it.

The cabin itself is small, but quite spacious for two. Four would be the absolute max I'd be comfortable sharing with. Everything in the house looks new and recently remodeled. The kitchen was excellent: Viking stove, microwave, granite counter tops, stainless steel fridge, fully stocked with utensils and cookware. The bathroom has a nice tub and a heating can. However, we noticed a strange smell coming from the tub after taking baths, like sulfur. It didn't bother us too much. The bedroom has a wonderful, super comfy heated mattress that can automatically turn off, and there's even settings for both sides of the bed. All the windows in the house have a beautiful view of the woods, and we saw lots of birds during our stay.

Down the driveway, there is a trail leading into the woods that is in reasonably good condition, but still lots of sticks and some times whole trees. It goes for quit some distance, but the views out there are incredible! It felt like total isolation in the woods, although sometimes you could hear a neighbor'a roosters and dogs. The cabin is rightly named Falling Cedar, for all the fallen trees we saw on the trail.

This place deserves its 5 star rating, and we would love to come back here again.

Four Nights of Paradise

  • 5 of 5
We loved our time away from Los Angeles at Falling Cedar Cabin! (as did our Norwich Terrier 'Tex'). The only sounds we could hear were the birds and bees but we had all the comforts of home. The night sky is glorious from the deck and we enjoyed star gazing from it. The WiFi connection is terrific as are all the rooms of the cabin including the remodeled kitchen and bathroom.

Just up the road is Cecilia (of Cecilia's Farm) and her husband Glenn who showed us their property and invited us in for a cold glass of peach iced tea. We look forward to seeing them again upon our return.

We miss you Falling Cedar Cabin and Palomar Mountain...but we'll be back.

There are many hiking trails on Palomar Mountain and around our cabin. You can go Fishing at Done Pond in the national park with a fishing license. The hiking is endless in the park. The Palomar Observatory is perhaps the world's most famous astronomical observatory. Since the 1930's it has been, and continues to be, a center of astronomical research.

Be sure to visit the Observatory.
