The 2014 season marks this three bedroom/ three bathroom gated estate's fourth year on the vacation rental market. The theme of this stunning Lopez Island home is quiet, casual, though refined and tasteful comfort. The home is situated to capture the expansive view facing directly east into Thatcher Pass, framed by Decatur Island to the north and Blakely Island to the south (look on your map of Puget Sound). From the living room or deck, watching the Washington State Ferries make their route from Anacortes to Lopez and beyond is a treat for eyes. At night, the slowly moving brightly lit ferry in the dark water is like a sparkling jeweled necklace (pardon the hyperbole, but this is not an exaggeration).

Of course, the recreation begins, literally, in your own rear yard. Spencer Spit State Park is a 10 minute walk up the secluded beach, which is accessed by the private path from the house. This is one of the only homes in the area with beach path access. The house is a convenient 4 miles from both the ferry landing and the village. Both are a mild bicycle ride away.

This graceful home would not be described as a “cabin” or “cottage.” This inviting and casual residence is tastefully furnished, with cherry wood floors, eleven foot vaulted ceilings, and features original oils and lithographs by famous northwest artists. Much of the decor is mid-century modern and some of the woodwork and ceramic pottery lamps are true period pieces. The kitchen is stocked with all the appliances, tools, and dishes necessary for creating full gourmet meals.

All of the rooms are large and spacious and while the house is approximately two thousand square feet it has an open and airy feel (the large glass exposures to the water enable this). The ranch style floor plan features a central living room, dining room, and kitchen. To the south of the central area are the two main bedrooms. The master bedroom has a 3/4 bathroom “ensuite.” The master bedroom has a king size bed with a sweeping view of Lopez Sound. In the morning, throw open the French doors to your private deck and greet the day by viewing the eagles that frequently soar overhead.

The second bedroom features a queen size bed, a garden view window, and a full bath just outside the doorway. Songbirds will be just outside your window.

To the north of the main common areas is the “kids wing” which contains a playroom, art making alcove, the kids bedroom (two sets of bunk beds), and a ¾ bath. The bunks in the kid’s area fold out on the bottom to become full-size futon. The kids suite features both garden and water views. Although we indeed love our children, the door to the 'kids wing' can be closed so that the children can occupied with games or a DVD, while the adults enjoy a late supper or sitting by the fire in the living room.

Just out the back door, facing the water, is a large grassy play area for children to run and play. There is a large netted soccer goal set up. The natural stone firepit is nestled into the rear lawn, overlooking the beach-bluff.

Your days on Lopez will be spent out on the island hiking, whale watching, deep water fishing, birding, biking, boating, lounging, and reading. Our across the road neighbor is Horse Drawn Farms where you can purchase local ingredients from Ken and Katherine’s farm stand for your meals. You will often see their strong and muscular horses pulling plows.

This extremely private, five acre gated estate is situated at medium bank. The only sound you will hear in the morning is the chirping of songbirds, and the low rumble of the ferry as it winds its way across the Puget Sound.

Once on the pebble and rock beach you can hunt for clams or take in fresh Dungeness crab (bring your inflatable craft and buy a crab-pot in town). There are large driftwood logs strewn for miles for children to hang and play on. From this beach one can walk north to the state park or south as long as the terrain permits. We own a private mooring buoy and guests will be provided with the GPS coordinates.

In the evening you may prepare your own dinner in our fully equipped kitchen, or use the propane gas grill on the rear patio. Following dinner you will likely spend your evenings by the firepit over looking the expansive view. With six Adirondack chairs surrounding the firepit, bring your food and drink down from the house, and wait until the stars fill the sky above you. The kids love making 'Smores' by the crackling fire!

There is a good quality, tuned, upright piano; your piano teacher will be delighted that you practiced during your vacation! This is a truly a magical, special home; a place to look forward to returning for many years, a place to build your own family traditions.

The owners are a couple active in the health-care field, with a fourteen year old child. The home and its decor have been designed with the comfort of both adults and children in mind.

The San Juans are close enough to Seattle (where we reside full time) to escape for the the weekend. Though they are just distant enough to get to (you must take the car ferry), so that even a few nights away feels like a rejuvinating adventure.

Enjoy hiking, biking, restaurants, kayaking, snoozing, lounging, reading, fishing, crabbing, boating, Bar-B Que, etcs.

This was our first visit to Lopez Island but we have spent 5 summer vacations in the San Juan's and rented multiple houses. Although we had a little trouble initially getting onto the property (for which the owner profusely apologized) the house and the views were spectacular. The house was very well equipped and as beautiful as advertised. The views were spectacular and the house was in a great location, especially near some fun kayaking. Although the house allowed all the privacy one would want, we had gardeners working in the yard, sawing, blowing and doing what appeared to be yearly maintenance for 2 days. They usually started early in the AM and were there most of the day. This house is definitely not for young children (we have a 12 yo, well behaved son).If you have children that are somewhat wild and not very careful, this house is NOT for you. There are a lot of valuable pieces of art, expensive flooring and furniture that require a lot of care. There are very explicit rules for the house explaining that this is not just a rental but their house and one should be very careful. All and all if you want a beautiful house in a great location but requiring some care this is the place. You can't find a better house. We found Lopez Island VERY quiet but at the end of our trip it kind of grew on us. There is definitely more to do on San Juan Island with a lot more restaurants and entertainment. If you want solitude, this is your place.

Fabulous Vacation Property!

Just spent a week at this spectacular home in one of the most beautiful places on Earth! The home is lovely, absolutely immaculate and well stocked with many amenities. Our gourmet chefs were thrilled at how well outfitted the kitchen was. We loved using the propane grill on the back patio as well. This home really is the perfect vacation rental - beautiful linens, plentiful towels, comfortable beds, great location, amazing view, etc. It is located just a short drive from Lopez Village and the Ferry dock. We really enjoyed exploring Lopez and all that it offers, but loved hanging out at the house, enjoying the views and making s’mores around the fire pit as well. We also made good use of the easy beach access and short walk to Spencer Spit State Park. The house is equipped with a great TV/Entertainment center that we never actually used because there was too much else to do!

The owners have done a great job describing the home and property and are a pleasure to work with. They have such a magical place here on Lopez and I’m so grateful that they are willing to share it! We can’t wait to return! We highly recommend this rental.

Piece of paradise

This was our second visit to this immaculate vacation rental, and we just love this home. The sun streaming into the house each morning, the breathtaking views, the just-right kids wing, the fire pit, the fully equipped kitchen, the beach access -- it all makes for an easy and unforgettable time away. We have stayed at a half-dozen rentals on Lopez over the years, and this one has the most magnificent grounds, the best view, and the best-cared-for interior. Can't wait to come back...

Beautiful retreat on Lopez Island

We always rent houses when we travel, especially now that we have children, and I would rank this one in the top three we've ever stayed in. The views and the location were spectacular. The house was beautiful and fully equipped. I've never stayed in a vacation rental that had everything, and I mean everything, we needed in the kitchen, but this house did. We did not have especially good weather during our week on Lopez, however, the house was so incredibly cozy and comfortable we did not mind a bit. The kids' wing was absolutely fantastic for our children (ages 8 and 10). They loved having their own area all to themselves. There were so many games and toys they never ran out of things to do. The basket of Legos alone could have kept this busy all week. And when the weather cleared, we played croquet on the lawn, we roasted marshmallows in the fire pit, we walked down to the state park and the kids built forts in the driftwood, and we collected shells and rocks on the beach. Oh, and we even occasionally left the property too for bike rides and hikes and trips into Lopez Village for ice cream and swimming at the Lopez Islander heated pool. But we could have been entirely happy spending the whole week right at the house. It was that relaxing and comfortable. We'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing family retreat on Lopez with one caveat - it is beautifully decorated and maintained and probably not suitable for pre-school age children who are into everything, like ours used to be.

Great Stay!

My family and I just stayed here this past weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed the home and the property. The owners have provided so many nice amenities in the house, that it made our stay extra special for all in our party. The kids wing with all the toys and arts and crafts area made our kids stay extra fun. Our older son was especially excited that he could play soccer and Frisbee outside on the expansive grounds. Our younger son was thrilled to see all the toy trucks. My 70 year old mother loved how relaxing the grounds were and that the property and house was so well maintained and beautiful. This is a great house on a beautiful property and we will definitely visit again.
