Location, character and price are the three key ingredients to a worthwhile vacation home. All three describe Waterlily Lane on uncrowded Glen Lake. Charming Victoria, the 'garden city' is nearby and Waterlily is on it's edge. 20 mins away from both Butcharts and Victoria's inner harbour area.
'Waterlily' is the perfect gathering place for a island vacation, family reunion, group holiday or wedding party. Need more beds? Rent the attached 500 sq ft carriage house for $150 night. NB Once the main house is booked I don't separately book the attached carriage house to insure privacy for main house guests. During summer minimum booking is 4 nights. Lots of wildlife visit the property, you even may see our resident fisherman 'Hemmingway,' a blue heron, catching fish off the dock. Or native turtles sunning themselves on a log next door or the family of otters crunching on crayfish up in the rope swing tree fort. More bald eagles live here than across the border.

Keywords: Victoria, Vancouver Island, Butcharts, 3 Brm lake front main house, separate carriage suite, garden with fruit trees, huge deck with view and dock, fishing & boating, nearby golf, mall and seashore. Lakefront. Wedding, family reunion,
Born in Australia and raised here in BC - I work as an counsellor in our local school district.
The property reflects my time spent sailing, travelling and living in New Zealand, Australia and the Caribbean. I enjoy hosting people and sharing the adventures to be had here on Vancouver Island..... be it great food, world class Salmon fishing spots or surf kayaking locations.
richard cook purchased this house in 2004
My parents raised me to appreciate a good view and Waterlily has that and more. Bald eagles nest in our giant fir trees, large grey heron fish from the same docks we do, otters crunch the crayfish while turtles bask in the sun on the cedar logs that form a water garden next door. It is not unusual to see a deer stop on the path and look at us playing crib down at the firepit in the early evening during summer.
So much to do within easy reach from our home with good weather - not too hot and not too much rain. Very few biting insects. The only things that bite are the bass, trout and catfish in the lake.
Taking the Princess raft out around the lake is worth price of admission. But during summer I like to walk down to the Taki Tiki and make a fresh cup of coffee in the early morning, sit silently on a couch by the glassy lake and just be. Maybe see a family of baby raccoons walk along the shoreline looking for breakfast. Or grab a yoga mat to do some stretches before diving into the lake for a warm water swim. The lake can get to 80f (24c) degrees (matching air temperature) on the surface during summer. When it gets too hot on the lake then you can retreat with a book or a beer to a hammock under shade by the numerous fruit trees..
There are 7 bikes to take out on the historic cycle trail called the Galloping Goose at the south end of Glen Lake road. You can ride for 40 kms in either direction travelling on a protected bike path, shaded by forest for most of it.
Hiking/running trails are easy walk away from your front door. Ask me about where to go mountain biking.
I am not a golfer however Bear Mtn, Royal Colwood and Olympic View are all within a real time 10 minute drive. World class Salmon and Halbut fishing is an hours drive up the west coast. I charter fish every year with success (limit out on Halibut and Salmon)
Rugby Canada makes it's West Coast home field and training centre at one end of our lake.
We were four families, eight adults with eight kids. Toddler to seven year olds. This was an amazing place. Richard planned about our stay at the property better than we could do it ourselves. Every amenity was taken care of, every facility was provided for. The property sits right on the lake, with an option to go on to the lake in the 'Princess'. It was way too cold for us to venture out to the lake but we did spend some good time in the hot tub. The kids loved the assortment of movies to watch from and the kitchen was well stocked.
We will be definitely come back for summer.
We came for a Christmas family get-together with our two kids, and the house was great for us. The owner, Richard, was unbelievably helpful throughout the entire process and went above & beyond to make sure our trip was wonderful - which it was!
I would love to check this place out in the summer, but we were still able to take the barge out and enjoy the property thoroughly.
What can we say! It was the best get away that could be asked for. We were 3 Army friends that served 42 years ago at Work Point Barracks, along with our wives. In our 1 week there, we did not find the time to utilize all of the amenities that Richard offered us. We loved the 'Princess' cruising that lake. Beautiful view from the deck. Pictures did not justify what we had seen. The 3 bedrooms were great for all of our privacy and the house was spacious. We enjoyed walking the trails nearby, and once Richard had joined us along with more orientation of the area as we walked.
Richard gave everyone that personal touch to top up our whole experience at WaterLily. Who knows, it could be an annual event for us all, and have a good excuse getting to Victoria more often!
We spent a fantastic week at Waterlily Lane. The lake, the house and the obvious care and attention the owner has put into providing a great vacation rental experience, all were exceptional.
We were a family of seven adults (parents and five 20-something kids) and dog. We benefitted from fabulous weather, but really it all clicked.
First, the lake: a beautiful setting, surrounded by low hills, feels like you're a million miles from the city, though civilization is just a few minutes away. And warm, warm enough even for *me*, which is saying something!
The barge: seating for all, including a custom Canuck Adirondack with a hockey stick and ski back (!), a cooler to keep your drinks cold, a quiet electric motor to take you out to tie off shore. Float there and revel in the relaxation, enjoy the conversation or a companionable read...
The toys: paddle board, canoe, kayak, bikes...there's lots to play with.
The house: roomy, clean, updated, good facilities, good range of sleeping accommodations. Huge deck overlooking the lake, another place to relax in the sun if you get tired of the barge on the lake or the grass in front.
Richard is very generous and attentive to any question or query, friendly but careful not to intrude; we mostly didn't even see him though he was living in the suite over the garage the week we were there (he indicated he often goes away when he rents the house).
I'd recommend Waterlily Lane to anyone.
This beautiful lakefront apartment exceeds all that is detailed on the site. Light, roomy, equipped and decorated as your own home but with so many special extras. We arrived and met our son and his family, so a party with an age gap of 3-68 needs quite different activities. We fished off the floating pontoon, we paddled in the canoes, we stood on the paddle boards and swam in the warm lake....all before drinks on the amazing terrace. Access in downtown Victoria was easy, just a 20 minute drive, so the Lakeside home had it all. We loved our stay and will definitely go back on our next visit.
This was absolutely amazing and everything we needed for our large family. I don't even know where to start, but the lake is absolutely tremendous. I'll go through as much as I can:
Getting there: Ferries is a good way to go, although it is a little expensive and is about 30 mins away. WaterLily is tucked away perfectly on the island and is a lakefront property on gorgeous(and private)Glen Lake
The Lakehouse: it is a very nice lakehouse (cottage built in the 60's) that's 3 floors with 3 bdrms and an extra bed downstairs. Probably 2500 sq feet. In the basement is a TV/DVD player that we didn't use much because we were outside so much, and a drum set. The beds are nice, we were comfortable. There is a washer/dryer. The main floor is also nice, although there were quite a few big ants on it (that was really hard for our kids), but what do you expect, its a lakehouse! And I think the owner is going to take care of it. Underneath the lakehouse is a tenant-Val-who is very nice. Richard (owner) is really good to work with and does everything he can to make sure you have a fantastic experience!
The Property: Right outside the back door is a grill and a beautiful deck with a hot tub. Our kids spent a lot of time in this very nice, old school hot tub. But we liked that it was older because we could all sit down in it. And the water was very warm w 3 jets
The Lake, Lakefront, and toys: This is where we spent almost all our time. It was, in a word, incredible. We were there in March and our kids all did the rope swing and swam over to shore (multiple times, then ran and got in the hot tub). I couldn't believe it. The water wasn't warm, but for Canada, in March, was amazing that our kids could get in. We were lucky that it was sunny most the time! But we love the rain and even when it rained it was beautiful. There are plenty of life jackets. The "Princess" barge is almost worth it just for this. Our kids LOVED trolling around the lake on it. And there are a ton of other water toys as well-canoes, kayaks, other little boats to fish from, etc
We don't drink so we didn't use the Taki tiki bar, but we did use the firepit and it was very nice. There is also horseshoes and bikes too.
Right next it is a nice little park with a sandy beach and toys for the kids to play on.
All in all, this was an incredible adventure into Canada for our family. We went to the Mormon church, which was very nice and pretty close, as is the Hatley Castle.
This was extraordinary!
4 Golf courses within 7minutes drive. We are 30 mins (real time) away from one of the best salmon & halibut sport fishing grounds in the world. Dungeoness crab is caught 7 minutes away in front of Royal Roads University beach. Trout and bass are in our lake. Jordan River surfing spot is 1 hour away and Long Beach-Pacific Rim National Park is a 4 hour drive north through the scenic Malahat Drive.
