I am an Australian who has lived here in Tuscany for over 12 years and come from a background of Hotels and Resorts and work as a Tour Guide and Holiday Manager.

Massimo Lenzi is my best friend and colleague making up the Tuscan side of Tuscany Kangaroos. He was born in the village and is a wealth of local knowledge - he also guides, with a lot of passion , people around the village of Vicopisano. But his full time position is managing the family business which is one of the last great arts and dying traditions of Vicopisano - Terracotta and Ceramics .

We both love to meet and entertain new people to the Village. It is still one of Tuscanys best kept secrets. You can find comments about us by some of our guests on Trip advisor check out Lenzis in Vicopisano. We also have a B & B or residence where we can accommodate up to 11 guests in four ensuite rooms.

The best part about staying here in Vicopisano is that you get the true Italian experience. No Tourist buses rolling through the streets, No tourist menus ! This is where you can be a local with the locals for a week or a month as long as you wish to stay.

Jonathon Hunter purchased this house in 2010

We have numerous houses and apartments and wanted to be able to offer a more historical form of housing . When this unique Tower House with such an enormous garden right underneath the famous castle and Tower built by Fillipo Brunelleschi became available we had to have it.

The views from all the windows looking down on to the garden or out at the surrounding towers are magical. The fact that no cars can pass, as it is set along one of the village lane ways, adds to the magic and the tranquillity. Such an unusually large garden with it's Grape Vine covered pergola and the outdoor dining space - all so private .

Geniuine old-world charm

  • 5 of 5
Our stay in Tuscany was in the hottest time of the year, when most of southern Europe takes its vacation. And for good reason.
That being said, my wife and I really enjoyed ourselves.

Public transport took us (mostly) everywhere we wanted to go, and just wandering through the village's cobble-stone streets was lovely. Old men just sit and talk in the square for hours on end while the women dress up for each other and drink espresso and chain smoke. Fantastic.
I would highly recommend the popular EnoSophia, the village wine bar, for local tipple in the early evenings. The two restaurants are within walking distance and completely worth it (and even better than most you'll find in tourist-crowded Pisa or Florence). The grocery has an extremely friendly staff and probably the best sausages I've ever had.
Getting to the Tyrrhenian beach by bus was a good hour, but made for a great day-- the water was 28 degrees celcius! Florence is a reasonable day trip and Pisa is even closer.
I will echo other reviewers: this is not for resort-types. It is an experience of authentic Tuscan village life with all the eccentricities and charms that real travel reveals.

As for the proprietors, Jonathon and Massimo were not only helpful, but absolutely indispensable to our enjoying ourselves. Our "feast in the field" night was unforgettable.
If you can schedule one of Jonathon's guided tours of the Tuscan hillside you will not be disappointed. Just be sure to bring a good camera.

Owner's Response: Ted and Megan were perfect guests and even when there was a little problem with the plumbing they tried to fix it themsleves before calling me. Travelling with them and guiding them into the Tuscan lifestyle was a pleasure. It is lovely to meet guests from different parts of the world and these two Canadians have become friends.

Tutti va bene in Vicopisano

  • 5 of 5

Charming rustic home in Tuscany

  • 4 of 5
Rustic and quaint home in a small village in Tuscany. The home had everything we needed for our vacation. Our hosts were VERY friendly and helpful. They provided us information about the village - Viscopisano - and helped us to orient ourselves to the Tuscan region. The only thing the home did not have was AC (the weather was very hot - 35 C). However Jonathon and Massimo provided us with ample fans. We would recommend this property to anyone who wants to get a taste of a true Italian village in Tuscany.

Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Casa al Castello for a week 10/26-11.2 and absolutely loved the accommodations and the location. For those looking to be pampered at a resort - this might not be for you. For those wanting to experience Italy and the Pisa / Tuscany region - what a great find. From Vicopisano it is an easy commute to Pisa / Lucca / Florence and the wine country. We used both a rental car and public transportation to explore the surrounding area. The Tuscany Kangaroos made our stay delightful. The Casa al Castello was exactly as described and the welcome "kit" started the stay of perfectly. The town of Vicopasno is as charming and delightful as anyone could want. We easily found our way around including the "village" square, library, and the cafes. Additionally, the butcher shop was a treat. Do not miss the Sat. morning market.
We look forward to returning soon.

Happy Family - Great Holiday at Casa al Castello - Vicopisano

  • 5 of 5
My family and I (6 in all) stayed in Casa al Castello in the little Hamlet village of Vicopisano, Tuscany , in April 2011. We were it's first guests after it's renovations. My children said it was awesome and my husband said " good choice Darling". This Tower House with it's brick floors painted red and it's super thick walls is so comfortable, quiet and stylish that we all felt like kings and queens for the two weeks we had there.
We ate, drank and lazed in the garden , wandered back and forth to the village Gelati shop and got to recognise a number of the locals as they got to recognise us as the visitors. We were nervous about driving in Italy and after contacting the owner - Jonathon Hunter he convinced us that public transport would get us to the places we wanted to see.

We took the bus to see the leaning tower of Pisa and also to Lucca where we rode bikes around the town and then along its' walls. We trained back and forth to Florence a few times and as the owner advised saw some things in Florence that normally a tourist wouldn't fined. The owner is a tour guide so he has some great tips and advice about the area.
We were pampered in the local wine shop with little offerings of foods and wines to try whilst my two children were given gelati and typical italian fizzy drinks. The butcher was great -- no english - but sold us some great cuts of meat and tried to explain the best way to cook them - generally we cooked out in the garden on the bbq.
We have already decided that we will come back one year at christmas and enjoy the big open fire in the lounge and the cosiness that the house must offer in the winter.

Casa al Castello is great - thankyou Jon for the hamper, the kindness, the tips and for introducing us to Vicopisano
