Tobacco, the Kanawha Canal, the James River and small villages evoke nostalgia and historic images. The place is Howardsville, which is part of the early 19th century history of Albemarle County. Drive down the meandering Howardsville Turnpike and turn at the old Methodist Church to this secluded property built around 1860. Nestled among 'plantation' homes with names such as Monticola, West Cote, Dungannon, the cottage has been remodeled with modern day amenities.
Walk or bike around the curve to the James River, watch the train go by or put your kayak in for a leisurely float to Warren Ferry, Hatton Ferry (only working ferry remaining in the U.S.) or to the town of Scottsville. Howardsville Canoe Livery ,within walking distance of cottage, provides shuttle, tubes, kayak, or canoe. See their website for more information.
Travel in any direction to see historic sites such as Monticello, Ash Lawn, Montpelier, University of Virginia, Civil War landmarks such as Appomatox. Within 40 minutes be at a winery or brewery, Blue Ridge Parkway, ski resort, and antique shopping.

Barney and I are retired schoolteachers. We like to spend our time woodworking, gardening, and visiting with family. We live very close to the rental property and enjoy the same activities advertised.
The Howardsville community is an area that takes you out of the city and down by the river.
Two rivers come together, the Rockfish feeds into the James, which makes for great boating, floating, and kayaking. We also visit the historic areas and the wineries.
