Charming, clean and secluded.
What a great experience! We arrived on Friday, May 24, 2013 for Memorial weekend. Our teen fluctuated from loving the trip - so cool was the property for exploring the wooded acres, bushwhacking paths to alternate fishing spots, and fishing. But when he discovered no cell phone coverage to text his friends to share his fun and no wifi to game on his iPod Touch- he was bummed, but not for long. So, If you are looking for an opportunity to unplug your child from texting and gaming, this is the perfect place. On Saturday (and again on Sunday- admission is good for a week of entries to the park) we went to the Appomattox Court House National Park. We stopped by Walmart to pick up some fishing tackle. Our teen caught the first fish (while testing the cast for his younger sister) and was thrilled. We played family games at night and completed a puzzle over the long weekend. Our younger two waded around in the river when we stopped catching fish. The cicadas Brood 2 were very loud. It was fun to see them everywhere outside. I decided that this was my new way to camp. We spent most of our day outside and slept inside on a comfortable bed with air conditioning and bathroom. The kitchen is well stocked for normal food prep, but I had brought a cake mix that needed a loaf pan, so Kathy brought me three different ones to choose from. She and Carlton were only a phone call away (using the cabin phone) and willing to accommodate us if we had any questions or needed anything not already on the premises. We saw a small orange colored Eastern American toad, a large Eastern Fence lizard, a very loud Ruby Throated hummingbird, a deer, 5 various fish and tons of cicadas. I did not see (to my relief) any poison ivy on the path between house and river and none of us got a rash (including the bushwhacking kids). It is a steep path down to the river - so I always used walking sticks to keep my footing.
The cabin was a little crowded with 3 kids (in sleeping bags), but compared to camping in a tent, it was very spacious. I can imagine it being a very nice romantic getaway for two, but we wanted to try it with the whole family. When making the reservation, I emailed the owners a long list of questions. They promptly called me and answered everything. The place is charming, clean, and secluded. Thank you Kathy and Carlton. We will try to make another visit in August.
