The Los Olivos Charmer is a unique three story Victorian home located in the heart of Los Olivos. There are many areas for you to enjoy at this beautiful property all while situated in on the charming street o. There are several “sweet spots” to sit and savor the views of the adjoining historical Montanero/Herthel fields, the distant mountains, as well as Alamo Pintado Creek, which runs through the gardens. The gazebo offers a quiet setting to view the creek and watch wildlife in the riparian zone. A very short walk to the small town affords the occasion to experience restaurants and wine tasting at its best, including the historic Mattie’s Tavern, which was a stage coach stop back in the day. Inside the home you can also experience a little history of the valley as you dine on pews from Old Mission Santa Ines, which celebrated its 200th Anniversary in 2004. The third floor is 1,000 square feet which is an added bonus!

Family Thanksgiving

Our family of 11 enjoyed Thanksgiving in Los Olivos. We were pleased to find that the kitchen was well equipped as we cooked three dinners together. We did bring our own knives and cutting boards and were happy that we did. There is just one oven which cooks very fast and a microwave that heats very slowly. The refrigerator was very good as was the gas cook top.
The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. The house is very dark at night; it would be helpful to have more nightlights available. There were pleasant spaces for visiting, reading, and crafts. We enjoyed several walks into Los Olivos and in the surrounding area.
There were two surprises in the house. First, access to the large third floor bedroom is by a very narrow, very steep staircase, probably converted from a closet. This was not a problem for our family although we were always very careful going up or down. Second, if any appliance was running (refrigerator, stove, microwave, washer, dryer, TV) the lights pulsed frequently, suddenly brighter or dimmer or rapidly flickering. In the guest house, it was not comfortable to have lights on while the dryer was working. Since we were just there for a few days, we tried to laugh at the strange lights.
We chose Los Olivos because it was centrally located for our family. The house was comfortable and spacious and we enjoyed our time together.

We LOVE staying in Los Olivos, but this house was very unwelcoming.

A group of us stayed at this home and were quite disappointed in the high price and low quality. We have rented many homes in the area and have loved every property, except this one. There are many rules posted throughout the entire house in bold letters that made the stay very unwelcoming.

PROS:
Beautiful landscaping, walking distance to downtown Los Olivos, big front porch & back yard, plenty of bedrooms, and a guest house.

CONS:
1. We didn't have hot water for 3 of the 4 nights. Having 12 adults unable to take a hot shower was unnerving, even though they came and said they fixed the problem.
2. Zip ties on many of the cupboards with a sign that says "$500 fine for any locked cupboard that is open."
3. Signs posted (we lost count after 12) but here's what some of them said, "Eating and drinking ONLY in certain areas", "Do NOT us the DVR on the TV", "Use cutting boards NOT counter tops", etc.
4. No hand soap, supply of toilet paper, good quality pots and pans, or knives that weren't dull.
5. An outdated kitchen that made cooking difficult at times (oven doesn't work on bake, etc).

Owner's Response: In response to this review, we would like to comment on the following:
1.) The homeowners were occupying the house on December 15, 2012 and there were no renters at the property from Dec 10-27, 2012. I believe these particular guests stayed over Thanksgiving.
2.) The morning the guests called to notify us that they did not have hot water, our property manager attended to the guests and was at the house 20 minutes after the call. He was able to get the hot water working. The guests then called us the day they departed stating that they did not have hot water for the remainder of their stay and wanted monetary compensation. The hot water was working when we left the property and had it stopped working, the guests should have called us to come back out. My assumption is that the hot water was working fine after we fixed it on the first day of their stay and not inoperable for 3-4 days as they have stated in their review.
3.) The homeowners do have signs throughout the house, some are operational instructions (only designed to help our guests) and others are more 'rule' oriented. Since this is our second complaint, the homeowners will be removing some of the signs as not to make our guests feel so restricted. The signs are only in place to help our guests better understand how to operate the house or because we have had issues in the past where damage has been done to the property.
4.) There were 3 rolls of toilet paper (per bathroom) left at the house, plus one bar of hand soap left per bathroom. We left, one large roll of paper towels, ample trash bags, dish towels, dish soap, dish sponge, dish washer detergent, laundry detergent, magazines, visitors guides, organic counter-top cleaner, organic coffee, tea, hot chocolate, creamer, and a welcome binder for the guests with information and recommendations on the Santa Ynez Valley. As always, we had all the beds made with fresh linens and all bathrooms stocked with bath towels, hand towels, face towels and bath mats. Every property receives these amenities, each and every rental. This is standard procedure for us at Santa Ynez Vacation Rentals.

We sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconveniences these guests experienced at the Los Olivos Charmer and we hope to improve what we can for our future guests.

Perfect Home and Perfect Weekend

This home was everything we hoped it would be and more. It's so nice to get away and not have to stay in a hotel. This property was immaculate and the home was gorgeous. We had such a great time wine tasting and then coming back to cook dinners and enjoy each others company and the lovely ambiance. Would definitely stay here again and hope to do so soon.

The house is a lovely property in a great location. In particular the outside space is beautiful. You can walk to all the tasting rooms in Los Olivos. However, many of the owners’ rules and requirements make the guests feel less than welcome in their house. Just about everything in the house is locked up with the threat of $500 fines. Décor items are labeled “Display Only”. Rules specify that guests are only allowed to eat in the dining room, kitchen or outdoors, can only park one car in the expansive driveway, need to take shoes off so as not to scratch floor, do not run dishwasher on anything but economy cycle, the oven did not work, the coffee pot was old and leaked, we did not have enough linens, towels, toilet paper nor paper towels, the beds had vinyl mattress covers, only enough dishes for 9 and the house supposedly accommodates 14 etc. Lastly the check out time was early and the cleaning requirements were substantial even though we paid a non refundable cleaning fee. It felt is as if the owners are not really ready or willing to share their home. When the owners are ready it will be a great destination!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review above. We have a handful of cabinets locked, labeled “for homeowner personal use”. We had a closet lock broken into a few rentals back where the homeowner kept her valuable belongings. Since this review we have removed the sign but the closet still remains locked. There are plenty of open closets, drawers, and cabinets for guests to use. Certain decorative items have been used for serving food, etc which is why we labeled a few items in the home as “display only”. In our “House Guidelines” we kindly ask that guests eat only in the large kitchen or outdoor area as we have had multiple red wine stains on the carpeted bedroom and living room areas. The driveway has no car parking limit, matter of fact it can park quite a few cars! We also do not require guests to remove their shoes. We kindly ask guests to “check for rocks in soles of shoes”. The driveway is made of small pebbles and sometimes those little rocks get lodged in the soles of shoes, scratching the floor if not discovered. The oven does work. There is a sign right beside it that advices guests use it on convection mode. The coffee pot is only a few months old but since this review we have replaced it with a brand new one. The house is well equipped with linens and towels for 14. There is also a brand new washer and dryer that guests are able to use if they need to wash their sheets and towels. We provide laundry soap as well. Furthermore, our office will happily drop off additional linens and towels, a reasonable amount, if a guest needs. Just give us a call! The beds are well prepared with pillows, high quality linens, blankets and comforters. In addition we leave a slew of eco friendly amenity products which include trash bags, sponges, hand soap, dish soap, coffee, coffee fixings, tea, hot cocoa, magazines, etc. We provide 2 rolls of TP per bathroom and one large roll of paper towels. If guests need more paper products then provided, they are responsible for getting more. There is dishware for 14 which includes plates, bowls, coffee mugs, wine glasses, silverware, glasses, etc and there is additional dishware in the guest house. Since this review we have stocked the kitchen with even more. Check in is at 2pm and check out at 11am. This is clearly stated in the rental agreement the guests sign. We also clearly state that guests may request an early check in or late checkout time. This is a very large home, with many rooms and places to clean…including a guest house.
