Built as the Queen Elizabeth Guest House in 1940, this quaint, spacious, and historic house has a natural charm. It offers an alternative to the more contemporary houses that are available in the nearby beach locations. The house is equipped with beautiful hard-wood floors, and wonderful light, comfortable sofas, family heirloom furniture, 100% cotton sheets, down comforters, plenty of dining room chairs, well-stocked pantry, kitchen dining nook, and shady side. Two downstairs bedrooms have queen size beds. Small upstairs bedroom now has a queen-sized bed. The bunk room has a bunk bed (queen on bottom, single on top), a double futon bed, and and 2 futon mattresses. Kitchenette upstairs. The yard is completely enclosed by a white picket fence, with plenty of space for children and pets to run. A newly built, completely enclosed outdoor shower is great for washing off after the beach. There is a large magnolia tree with a swing in the front yard and lovely landscaping around the house.

Our house is in a quiet neighborhood within a pleasant, five-minute walk of coffee shops, restaurants, bookstore, movie theater, shopping, Roanoke Island Festival Park, NC Maritime Center, eco-kayaking, and the waterfront docks with a replica of a 16th century English ship. Located in the center of historic Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, this Nantucket-style village is connected to the NC Aquarium, The Island Farm, the Elizabethan Gardens and Fort Raleigh National Park by a delightful and meandering bike and walking path. The house is a 10-minute drive to the Nags Head beaches, a 20-minute drive to the Wright Brothers' First Flight Site, and convenient to journeys to the famous Corolla, Bodie Island, Hatteras and Ocracoke Island lighthouses.

About your Hosts: Anne, Robert and family: Robert Long and Anne Mandeville-Long live in Chapel Hill, NC where Robert is a performing arts building design consultant and Anne operates her Moss Garden Nursery School. Robert spent his first twenty-five summers living in Manteo with his parents, brother and sister, all of whom have been involved with the annual production of The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama. Robert portrayed the infant Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World, on her commemorative birthday when he was five months old. In all, Robert spent seventeen summers working with the Lost Colony production.
Robert and Anne blended their young families more than a dozen years ago and have many wonderful memories of visits to Manteo with their combined seven children. The family's two dogs, Maya and Luci, love their visits to Manteo.
Robert and Anne bought the 201 Uppowoc house in 2008 as soon as it came on the market. In addition to the lovely ambiance and the ideal location of the house, the property is adjacent to the back yard of his brother William's vacation home on Sir Walter Street. Having been a regular visitor to Manteo and Roanoke Island for his entire life, Robert knew that having a vacation rental in this picturesque town would be the fulfillment of a dream. Anne, who grew up on the Connecticut coast, has also grown to love Manteo and the Outer Banks.
For more than seventy years, the house at 201 Uppowoc has evoked a sense of calm and simple elegance for its residents and visitors. Located within the Old Town Historic District of Manteo, the house provides an excellent starting point for visits on foot or by bicycle to a variety of wonderful offerings including coffee shops, stores, galleries and restaurants, in addition to the longest-running family-owned movie theatre in North Carolina.
