HISTORIC 4 BEDROOM CAPE COD IN OLD TOWN MANTEO, 1 BLOCK FROM THE HARBOR.

Manteo House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, sleeps 10+, outdoor shower, upstairs kitchenette

Built as the Queen Elizabeth Guest House in 1940, this quaint, spacious, and historic house has a natural charm. It offers an alternative to the more contemporary houses that are available in the nearby beach locations. The house is equipped with beautiful hard-wood floors, and wonderful light, comfortable sofas, family heirloom furniture, 100% cotton sheets, down comforters, plenty of dining room chairs, well-stocked pantry, kitchen dining nook, and shady side. Two downstairs bedrooms have queen size beds. Small upstairs bedroom now has a queen-sized bed. The bunk room has a bunk bed (queen on bottom, single on top), a double futon bed, and and 2 futon mattresses. Kitchenette upstairs. The yard is completely enclosed by a white picket fence, with plenty of space for children and pets to run. A newly built, completely enclosed outdoor shower is great for washing off after the beach. There is a large magnolia tree with a swing in the front yard and lovely landscaping around the house.

Welcome to Uppowoc House in Manteo.: The village of Manteo is delightful, with plenty of activities in town, as well as additional activities throughout the northern Outer Banks. Our house is in a quiet neighborhood within a pleasant, five-minute walk of coffee shops, restaurants, bookstore, movie theater, shopping, Roanoke Island Festival Park, NC Maritime Center, eco-kayaking, and the waterfront docks with a replica of a 16th century English ship. Located in the center of historic Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, this Nantucket-style village is connected to the NC Aquarium, The Island Farm, the Elizabethan Gardens and Fort Raleigh National Park by a delightful and meandering bike and walking path. The house is a 10-minute drive to the Nags Head beaches, a 20-minute drive to the Wright Brothers' First Flight Site, and convenient to journeys to the famous Corolla, Bodie Island, Hatteras and Ocracoke Island lighthouses.

Historic Downtown Manteo has become a popular location for weddings and family ev

About your Hosts: Anne, Robert and family: Robert Long and Anne Mandeville-Long live in Chapel Hill, NC where Robert is a performing arts building design consultant and Anne operates her Moss Garden Nursery School. Robert spent his first twenty-five summers living in Manteo with his parents, brother and sister, all of whom have been involved with the annual production of The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama. Robert portrayed the infant Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World, on her commemorative birthday when he was five months old. In all, Robert spent seventeen summers working with the Lost Colony production.

Robert and Anne blended their young families more than a dozen years ago and have many wonderful memories of visits to Manteo with their combined seven children. The family's two dogs, Maya and Luci, love their visits to Manteo.

Robert and Anne bought the 201 Uppowoc house in 2008 as soon as it came on the market. In addition to the lovely ambiance and the ideal location of the house, the property is adjacent to the back yard of his brother William's vacation home on Sir Walter Street. Having been a regular visitor to Manteo and Roanoke Island for his entire life, Robert knew that having a vacation rental in this picturesque town would be the fulfillment of a dream. Anne, who grew up on the Connecticut coast, has also grown to love Manteo and the Outer Banks.

For more than seventy years, the house at 201 Uppowoc has evoked a sense of calm and simple elegance for its residents and visitors. Located within the Old Town Historic District of Manteo, the house provides an excellent starting point for visits on foot or by bicycle to a variety of wonderful offerings including coffee shops, stores, galleries and restaurants, in addition to the longest-running family-owned movie theatre in North Carolina.

Guestbook comments from the owner
We, a familiy of four people, 2 adults and 2 girls, spent a perfect holiday at this wonderful house. We found a very clean place, perfectly equiped with all utensils a traveller needs to feel at home, the description of the house including photos was perfect, we received a wonderful manual to use about the house and the surroundings.

We spent many hours relaxing at the house, went to the Saturday Farmer's Market, paddleboard tours, Kayaking with the recommended company to Alligator Nature Reserve, visited the big dunes and the Wright-Museum at Kitty Hawk, went swimming on the beaches nearby finding great conditions, watched sunsets near the old bridge, had great times at North Carolina Aquarium and Island Farm Museum.

It would have been easy to find more actvities for another 2 weeks!

We really would like to come back, there would be no other choice than this vacation home!

A spacious and relaxing place.

  • 5 of 5
I felt at home right away. This isn't a beach cottage. It's a house at the beach. There was so much space. We could've brought another family with us. There's a good sized living room and a big children's room upstairs. I'd go back in a heartbeat. The neighborhood is so relaxing and the minute I saw the little fence in the front yard I knew I was in the right place. Spotless. Inviting. Modern. Relaxing. So glad we found it.

We love this house!

  • 4 of 5
We found the house to be clean and tidy with nice furnishings and excellent bedding. Most of our group fished nearly everyday. Some visited the beach on 2 occasions. And a few went to the Wright Bros Mem and the Aquarium. We ate a wonderful meal at Stripers on the 2nd floor overlooking the sound. The kitchen was well supplied for cooking and dining. The parking is indeed adequate for 4 vehicles. Our group had 2 large SUVS, a full-size pickup and a midsize SUV and there was more than enough room for everyone to park and open doors. There is a small marina and ramp located about 5 minutes from the house for a boat and trailer. I do not recommend parking a boat longer than 15 feet plus a vehicle in the driveway. It fits, but the street access is narrow and backing in can be very difficult for the most experienced backers. I would use this rental again. The owners and caretaker of the property are both kind and prompt.

You will love this house!

A group of us came to Manteo for a close friend's wedding. We loved this house -- the rooms were more than spacious, the kitchen and grill were great, the living and dining rooms were perfect for relaxing, and the outdoor shower was an awesome amenity. The location is great!

Great for a large group/It served our purpose well

  • 4 of 5
The layout was great. We loved the outdoor shower. We had family and friends coming and going all week. We were in Manteo for our daughter's wedding. Numerous events at the house all week. The owner was always responsive to our questions in the months and weeks leading up to our arrival. Manteo is a great little town.
However, we felt the house wasn't as clean as we had anticipated when we arrived. The table at the entrance had sand all over it. Small bedroom upstairs appeared to have not been cleaned in some time. The 2 mattresses stored under the bunk bed were so dirty they couldn't be used. Lots of dust on picture frames, window sills, floorboards, door frames. The kitchen was full of ants. Coffee pot was so dirty it was unusable until we cleaned it. The refrigerator in the upstairs kitchen has so much rust it should be disposed of. Concrete walkway in the front needs work. It is a tripping hazard. Town parking rules weren't clear. A guest received a parking ticket in front of the house.

Owner's Response: 1. Sand on the front table. THANK YOU FOR THE REMINDER TO CHECK EVERY SURFACE FOR SAND. IT IS AN OLD OUTER BANKS FOLK LEGEND THAT THE EARLY OBX FAMILIES USED TO SWEEP THE DIRTY SAND OUT THE BACK DOOR AND BRING CLEAN SAND IN THROUGH THE FRONT, EVERY WEEK. THERE WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE SAND, SO THEY WANTED IT TO BE CLEAN.
2. Small bedroom upstairs appeared not to have been cleaned in some time. WILL MAKE SURE THAT OUR CLEANERS ARE CAREFUL TO CLEAN EVERY ROOM, AT EVERY CHANGE-OVER.
3.Two mattresses under the bed. WE NOW INTEND TO DISPOSE OF THESE FUTONS. THEY ARE RARELY USED, BETTER TO BRING BLOW-UP MATTRESSES, IF NECESSARY.
4. Lots of dust on the picture frames, window sills, floorboards, door frames. WE WILL INSTRUCT THE CLEANERS TO BE MORE THOROUGH.
5. The kitchen was full of ants. MANTEO IS BLESSED WITH INSECTS, ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER. WE ATTEMPT TO DEAL WITH THE ANT PROBLEM EVERY SUMMER, ACTIVELY AND PRO-ACTIVELY. WE HOPE THAT THE KITCHEN WAS ACTUALLY NOT FULL OF ANTS. WE FIND THAT THEY ARE AROUND THE SINK AND THE CABINETS NEAR THE SINK. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF THEY WERE BEYOND THESE AREAS.
6. Dirty coffee pot. IT LOOKS LIKE THE CLEANERS MISSED THIS ONE. OUR APOLOGIES.
7. Upstairs refrigerator. WE INTEND TO REMOVE THIS REFRIGERATOR. IT IS RARELY USED.
8. Concrete walks. WE ARE ALREADY AWARE OF THIS. FOLLOWING YOUR VISIT, WE BEGAN TO FIX THE PAVERS BETWEEN THE DRIVEWAY AND THE FRONT ENTRY. WE ARE DEALING WITH ROOTS FROM THE OAK TREE.
9. Town parking rules. WE ARE SORRY THAT YOUR FRIENDS RECEIVED A PARKING TICKET. PLEASE LET US KNOW AT WHAT TIME OF DAY THIS OCCURRED AND FOR HOW LONG THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. NEIGHBORS HAVE TOLD US THAT YOU AT ONE TIME HAD AS MANY AS 7 CARS PARKED AT THE HOUSE DURING A PARTY. OUR DRIVEWAY CAN ACCOMMODATE ONLY 4 CARS.

Please know that we value your comments which will we use as reminders of what we need to do to provide an excellent accommodation. We do want to say that it is a challenge to keep the house as clean as we intend when our cleaners have a limited time between the departure of one guest and the arrival of another. We observed that your family departed at noon rather than at 11am. Situations like this make it more of a challenge.

Thank you for your feedback and hope you will one day return and discover that your comments improved the quality of your stay.

Best regards,

Anne and Robert

This was our second stay in this house (see our review below from December 2012) and it continues to be a wonderful choice. Renters will find both the home and the town to be outstanding.

Enjoyable Coastal Experience

  • 5 of 5
This house was situated on a quiet street but was just a short walk to the waterfront. It was roomy, nicely finished with beautiful antiques, and comfortable beds. The kids enjoyed riding their bikes and scooters around the street. We had a relaxing stay and are ready to go back! The little light house was fun to check on each evening as well as the weather flag. There is a wonderful book store downtown. The waterfront was beautiful with benches and a nice boardwalk. We were also in walking distance of the Festival Park. The kids enjoyed the hands on experiences there and there was even a great quilt show for the adults to enjoy. We had excellent shrimp spinach salads at Ortegas and a good meal at Blue Moon at milepost 13 on the way home from the Wright Brothers Memorial Park.
The owners were very helpful and left good informational brochures on restaurants and activities.

Downtown Manteo has many wonderful activities to offer. In addition to the historic downtown, visitors can find coffee shops, eco-kayaking, para-sailing, kid's pirate ship adventures, a wonderful bookstore, the oldest continuously family-operated movie theatre in the country ($5 per movie; popcorn for $1), Roanoke Island Festival Park, the NC Maritime and Boat Building Center, and the recreation of the Elizabeth II sailing ship based on the design of the ships that brought the original English settlers to Roanoke Island in 1587. Swimming hole is not far from downtown.

The beautiful Outer Banks beaches of Nags Head, Bodie Island, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Southern Shores, Duck and Corolla are all within a short drive from Roanoke Island. Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke Island are located to the south of Nags Head.
