Overview

Mill Valley House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Featured in Sunset Magazine for its sheer simplicity, this beautiful home is located steps from the heart of downtown Mill Valley. Rarely do you find such an inspiring home that combines modern design, all the amenities, and a fabulous location with the opportunity to minimize your environmental footprint!

On the first floor, the dining room leads to a designer kitchen on one-side and opens to an outdoor deck on the other, overlooking Mill Valley with a glimpse of the San Francisco skyline. The living room features modular furniture which you can arrange based on your activities, as well as an entertainment center which includes an Apple TV with iTunes/iPod connection, surround sound and a multi-room speaker system. Off the living room, a half-bath helps with every day convenience.

Upstairs, there are three rooms that share a European-style bath with an open shower. One bedroom has a queen-size bed, the second bedroom a set of twin beds, and the third room, currently used as a kids playroom, can be adapted to your needs.

Walk to all the parks, shops, restaurants, hike to the top of Mount Tam and explore the town and local area.

About Scott Johnson

We are a family of four, with our two boys (14 and 12) attending the local middle school. Scott works as a management consultant in the field of sustainability, while Bea is an author and artist, and writes TheZeroWasteHome blog.

Scott Johnson purchased this house in 2007

Why Scott Johnson chose Mill Valley

This is our home - and we only rent for long weekends and during the school holidays (Christmas, Spring Break, Summers). We love the small town feel, and living in downtown Mill Valley, within walking distance to the restaurants, stores, and other activities.

What makes this house unique

We are just a short bike ride from Mt. Tam and world class mountain biking - or a short car ride to Muir Woods or Stinson Beach.

Lovely home in Mill Valley

  • 5 of 5

My family spent a few days in this bright, airy home while exploring Marin as well as visiting friends in the city. From the house, you can quickly walk to the restaurants, shops, and parks in Mill Valley. There was always an available parking space on the narrow street right in front of the house, with many steps leading up to the front door (pack light!). The kitchen is very well appointed with everything necessary to cook and eat in the home, and there are shopping bags available for trips to the market, a very short walk away. We greatly enjoyed the deck with its bountiful lemon trees and little herb garden. We found the minimalist style of the house quite appealing, although must admit we never figured out how to lounge comfortably on the furniture arrangement in the living room... but the beds were super comfy, and the rain shower in the bathroom was divine! it was thought provoking to live "without a trash can". The owner is available and responsive, we would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the feedback! We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at our home in Mill Valley. Regarding the lounge furniture: The couch is modular - so if we have the opportunity to host you again, please free to rearrange the sofa pieces to fit your needs! When the four of us watch a movie, we push the pieces around to make a queen size bed and use the pillows and blanket to get cozy. When we have people over for a drink, we use the middle piece as a coffee table, transfer the mirrored platter onto it for drinks, and scatter the other pieces around it for seats. It was a pleasure having you, we hope to host you again!

Peaceful Visit

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have 5 adult children who live in CA; four in the Bay Area. In the past visiting was wonderful but stressful, living out of a hotel room. Our week in Mill Valley at our VRBO, was one of the best visits we have had in years. The house was light, bright, clean, spacious and simple. It was easy to take it over as our own for the short time of a week and enjoy the change of sitting back and having our children visit with us in this peaceful setting.

Great Stay in Lovely Mill Valley

  • 5 of 5

My family and I (2 small kids) stayed during the New Years holiday and had a wonderful time. The home is in a fabulous location just a short 2-3 minute walk to town. It was great waking up and grabbing a coffee and feeling like a local for a few days. The home has everything you need in a clean, simple, "less waste" kind of way along with a cool, modern design. We came home rejuvenated and ready to de-clutter our house after our stay.

A Sunny, Clutter Free Oasis Near Shops and Restaurants Awaits You!

  • 5 of 5

It took me about five minutes after entering the home to put two-and-two together. This is the Zero Waste house that I read about months ago in Sunset Magazine. What a great opportunity for my family and I to try to live with zero waste for a few days. Really made us think, and we enjoyed the challenge. Vacations are great for getting perspective, and this house helped us realize our house has way too much stuff, and that if we got rid of things and pared back, we would be more relaxed and would have more free time. Our time at this home was fabulous. It had everything we needed to cook gourmet meals, and we enjoyed being able to walk to town for a coffee and to meet up with friends. Sunny, bright and comfortable. My kids loved the XBox 360 since they don't have one at home, what a treat. Excellent house for families! The owners were a pleasure to work with and were very professional.

Sunny and Inspiring

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, with our two kids, loved the warm, sunny home and the fantastic downtown location. The home was very modern, simple and the zero-waste lifestyle was inspiring. Mill Valley is a beautiful town and from the house it was an easy walk to the park, library, restaurants and grocery store. We highly recommend staying there.

My husband and I stayed here for a week with our two small children. The location was great and the house had everything we needed. It was very clean and simple which made for a relaxing time. As a side note- we loved the lemon trees on the deck!
