It really is that great!

This house really is a work of art created by the owners and you get the feeling that you are a welcome guest and not just a renter. I enjoyed just walking around the house and the property noticing all the details and feeling happy for getting the chance to live in the house. I was even more fortunate to meet the owner who told me all about the construction and design that made the house a home.

Over the years I've visited Santa Fe many times, but because of this home I saw it in a whole new way this trip. I enjoyed running the trails in the open space and the public trail head is just up the road, less than a mile. Santa Fe has a lot to offer, but except for making sure I got to have breakfast at Tia Sofia's, I could go there again and be happy just to stay at the house and wander the property and trails around it without even going into town.

I've stayed at maybe half a dozen Homeaway properties, and none disappointed. Most got five stars, but now I feel like I need to award six stars because this has been the best of them all. Thank you Albert and Connie for creating such a wonderful home and for allowing my wife and I to share it. We really hope to return soon!

We had the pleasure of visiting Casa del Rio in mid-May of last year and before we were on the plane in Albuquerque for our return home we were talking about our next trip. That little gem of a cottage was home base and home away from home for my wife and me for an unforgettable visit to northern NM.

The comfort of Casa del Rio is second only to the charm, thoughtfulness and hospitality of Albert and Connie Durand, our host and hostess and new best friends. They have thought of everything to make this "pied-a’-terre" the perfect place to start a day in Santa Fe, and a place we looked forward to returning to at the end of each day. If there is a drawback to Casa Del Rio, it’s the temptation to "stay home" and enjoy the unbelievable craftsmanship and good taste that has gone into the construction and furnishings instead of touring NM. So we did both.

If you think the information and photos on the website are too good to be true, they aren’t. If anything, they don't do Casa del Rio justice. (That said, however, please don't make a reservation. It might make booking our next visit more difficult for us.)

Swedes find refuge at Casa del Rio

Our stay at Casa del Rio started with perfect directions! An exchange of emails and we knew exactly where to go. When we arrived we were welcomed by Albert, who opened his home, shared all the unique features of the amazing property and then generously handed over his dear treasure to us... two total strangers! An amazing show of confidence. We immediately fell in love with this unbelievably lovely creation. We discovered something new every day, little details that the owners had lovingly created and built with their own hands.
The house is truly a piece of art. We felt honored to be trusted with the use of the house as our own during our stay. We agree wholeheartedly with all the previous reviews; it is hard to top what others have written about the experience of staying in Albert and Connie's unique house, filled with love and care, inside and out. It must be very rewarding to be Albert and Connie, to trust others and give completely and to be rewarded with good friends around the world. It has inspired us greatly and we would like to follow suit.

Santa Fe Sanctuary

On this trip to Santa Fe we finally drove up to Taos and visited the Taos Art Museum, built by our favorite oil painter, Nicholai Fechin. For decades we have loved it in photos and were eager to see in person how Fechin had blended Native American, Spanish, and Russian styles.

We were not disappointed.

But we want everyone to know that it really didn't hold a candle to the wonderful Casa del Rio where we stayed on Upper Canyon Road!

Casa del Rio may not be a national landmark (yet) but from site planning to bath tile it is just so perfect a little house, and we feel so lucky to have stayed there. Overlooking the Santa Fe River and beyond to the spectacular cottonwood forest, we enjoyed frequent walks through the front patio down a wooded path to a private picnic spot complete with clay chiminea fireplace and a sylvan sitting area of wicker on a raised crude wooden floor. Perfect. Never saw anything quite as charming. A private section of river a few steps away. Walking paths that seem to reach forever. Every rock placement a labor of love. And—because of Albert and Connie's tireless efforts—a well nurtured, protected, natural river valley, abundant with native plants and wildlife. It's a healing place. My failing legs actually recovered during our stay.

The house itself is an intriguing study in custom building, custom cabinetmaking, and interior design shaped for convenience and esthetic delight. There is visual interest wherever your eye rests and a surprise around every corner. And there's nothing like waking to birds singing and the sounds of the river down below. Sorry Nicholai...

Its all perfect Santa Fe. And beyond. As to the owners, how about this: they are the designers and builders/craftspeople, they are not only sweet, but are so special they even found hypoallergenic soaps for our hyper-sensitivities. We are recommending Casa del Rio to our friends who know the difference and can take the time to appreciate the very finest of vacation hospitality.

Preeminently Perfect!!!

It is pure pleasure....daunting albeit...to sing the praises (as a written review) of Casa Del Rio! What MORE can be said. The reviews before us have all so eloquently captured it's spirit. We want to be able to shine the brightest well deserved light possible on it!

Gene, my husband, tells me just say..."WE HAVE TO GO BACK"," Albert and Connie are two of the nicest most attentive people on earth", "There is so much more to enjoy"....he's right of course....but there is SO much more to say than that!

The first thing you need to know is TRUST the pictures....well maybe the only surprise will be the casa is even BETTER than the photos show. Just breathtaking! Albert and Connie have designed and appointed it so well. Albert is an architect and wooden boat enthusiast. He built the casa with such care and attention to detail with the BEST materials and use of space imaginable. Connie exudes "artist"! Around every corner is the delicious balance of form and function sprinkled with loads of creativity. Now that's just the inside....the outside is unbelievable with gardens at every turn, wildlife to greet you, the sound of the "Rio" babbling. You can enjoy peace and privacy beyond measure.

You can expect a kitchen and pantry awaiting you full of goodies and staples...what a welcoming! Connie takes great care in providing some wine and snacks she thinks will be a good fit for you based on your previous communication. One needs nothing....everything is thought of. Two of our guilty pleasures were, for me, basking in the sun on the bed under glorious windows feeling like a cat taking her afternoon nap and for my husband, perusing Albert's Library, settling on more than one book to sink his teeth in. (it's a capacious selection)

Albert was so forthcoming and accommodating from our very first communication to our final good-by. He supplied us with excellent restaurant recommendations as well as shops, ruins and galleries.

Everything has been thought through. It is immaculate..The ambiance is truly breathtaking and if there was an award for BEST host and hostess anywhere, EVER....these two would receive it!

We can't say enough about our visit. Gene was right....we WILL go back soon. Word of warning. Book soon because I'm sure it won't be long before word spreads and it will be impossible to get a reservation.

We want to thank our new "friends" for sharing your little corner of the sky with us!
