Salvo Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 4.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

Such a quaint cottage with so many extras including a detached guesthouse! New to the rental market and fully updated, Pelican Point is a unique retreat with amazing wetland and sound views and over an acre of outdoor space partially shaded by majestic live oaks, cedars and a large fig tree. Direct sound access, a large grassy area for rigging and a boardwalk to a spacious private soundfront dock and more than 500 feet of soundfront shoreline make for a watersports paradise, whether windsurfing, kiteboarding, fishing, crabbing or kayaking. And if your thoughts turn to the ocean it's an easy walk to Salvo's wide and un-crowded sandy beaches for a day of surfing, boogie boarding, fishing, shelling or just relaxing in the sun.

After a fantastic day on the water come home for a dip in the private soundfront pool or 6-person hot tub to watch the sunset over the sound; or relax with a game of horseshoes or bocce on the lawn. A huge fig and live oak canopy provides ample shade to while the day away with a good book or a shady spot for the tots to play. A small wetlands beach, sheltered and shallow waters and small playhouse under the oaks are great for little kids, and everyone can enjoy the gameroom with pool table, basketball hoop and hammock in the cedars.

The main cottage allows easy access for all including seniors and handicapped, with one-level living, a ramp to the back door, and a bathroom with large accessible shower. It features a large and well-equipped kitchen with new stainless steel appliances and views over the pool to the sound, a dining area that seats 12, and new high-efficiency washer & dryer. The sunny living room has spectacular sound views, a 42' flat-screen TV with cable, Blu-ray DVD, a huge selection of movies on demand via Netflix, and a massive music library via Pandora Internet Radio.

The cottage has 4 bedrooms including two masters. Bedroom 1 is a master with a king bed, flat-screen 26' TV / DVD with cable, large bathroom with a handicapped accessible shower, and stunning views over the pool to the wetlands and sound. Bedroom 2 is a master with a queen bed and bathroom with bath and shower, and large windows with views of the sun rising through the cedars. Bedroom 3 has a queen bed and sliding glass doors to a brick patio on the soundside, and bedroom 4 has two sets of bunks (4 twin beds). Bedrooms 3 and 4 are by the hall bathroom which has a bath and shower.

The cozy detached guesthouse is about 30 feet from the cottage (on the other side of the pool) via a walkway and ramp, and has a part-covered deck with porch swing, adirondack chairs and amazing wetland and soundfront views - a great place to watch the many birds that visit, the kiteboarders speeding by or the breathtaking sunsets. Inside there is a gameroom with pool table and 32' flat-screen TV with cable / Blu-ray DVD / Netflix / Pandora, and a wetbar with full-size refrigerator / ice-maker, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. There is also a media room (which doubles as a second living room) with a large sectional sofa with fold-out full bed, and 42' flat-screen TV with cable and Blu-ray DVD with Netflix on-demand movies and Pandora Internet Radio. The guesthouse also features one cozy bedroom with a queen bed, and a bathroom with shower.

Pelican Point is a traditional Hatteras cottage that has been fully updated, but without losing the simple island charm reminiscent of the more remote Ocracoke Island, where live oaks stand watch over one-story cottages and small family cemeteries that tell the story of the island. In fact the cottage is built by the site of the traditional homestead and resting place of some of the original settlers in the area. Their homestead lasted hundreds of years on the high ground by the live oaks, with the land where Pelican Point now stands serving as the family farm and route to the wetlands and sound for hunting and fishing. Although the original homestead has made way for development, some of the descendants still live near Pelican Point and are great neighbors with wonderful stories to tell!

To help make your stay as enjoyable and relaxed as possible we have teamed with Shore Details, a premier property management company based near Pelican Point and led by friendly and helpful owners Pam and Rene Stoffel. Shore Details will clean and prepare Pelican Point for your arrival; provide bed linens and make the beds; and stock the house with an initial supply of paper towels, toilet paper, dish detergent and trash bags to get you started. Shore Details is just a phone call away to take care of any problems or concerns during your stay, and also provides a great personal concierge service to help you plan outings and activities to get the most out of your vacation!

Pelican Point features Friday check-in (4pm) so you can avoid the traffic and long grocery store lines on Sat/Sun arrival days. Friday checkout (10am) also gives you time to travel, unpack and get ready for the week ahead - or to start planning your next vacation!

About The Owner

We're a family of four with two active young boys and love watersports, taking long walks on the beach and relaxing with friends and family. We particularly enjoy windsurfing, surfing, sailing and kayaking - and want to add kiteboarding and fishing to the list!

Based in central NC, we race to the Outer Banks at every opportunity. Our kids love to kayak, crab, climb Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, visit the turtles and take the free ferry across to Ocracoke. We all love the friendly, laid-back atmosphere on the Outer Banks, and the amazing sights and seafood!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2010

Why The Owner chose Salvo

Since moving to NC in 2007 we found ourselves visiting the Outer Banks more and more often. The beautiful soundfront views and unspoiled beaches of Salvo soon became our favorite destination - even in the height of summer the beaches are uncrowded and there is always a quiet spot to windsurf or kayak on the sound. The major attractions are all close by too: Hatteras and Bodie Lighthouses, The Graveyard of the Atlantic, Lost Colony and Wright Brothers Museums.

Our breath was literally taken away when we first saw Pelican Point - it is a little piece of paradise by the sound. You have to experience the stunning 180 degree wetland & sound views and 200 year old live oaks to fully appreciate the wild beauty and see why we love this spot.

What makes this cottage unique

Pelican Point has hundreds of feet of soundront access, over an acre of outdoor space and is only a short walk to the ocean beaches. There are rental shops nearby for kayaks, surfboards, bikes and beach equipment, and for kiteboarders Real Watersports and The Slick are just to the north. Grocery and fishing supply shops are a five minute drive and a cinema and larger shopping district can be found in Avon, a 15-20 minute drive away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time, we may have left a little piece of all of our hearts there. And we will for sure be back. What a beautiful beautiful spot you have there and the dock is just gorgeous! Thanks again for sharing your paradise!

Absolutely Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5
My boyfriend and I spent a long weekend at Pelican Point and it was amazing! The cottage was absolutely charming, and the location was perfect! Not to mention, we could not get over how affordable the rate was, especially for such a great area. The owners were super friendly and easy to work with; because we booked the week of our stay, they were willing to rent to us for less than the 7 night minimum and, when we accidentally kept one set of keys, were very understanding and responsive to emails in our effort to return them. We sincerely hope to visit again in the near future and would certainly recommend this property to anyone and everyone!

Wonderful rental house!

  • 5 of 5
Pelicon Point was everything I had hoped based on the pictures and other reveiws. Dealing with the rental process was very professional, and the combination of the main house and guest house/game room worked out wonderfully for us. We have rented quite a few homes in different parts of the country, and this spot in Salvo right on the Sound is a real gem. We also found the kitchen very well equipped. You can tell the owners take a lot of pride in their beautiful home. Thank you for sharing it on VRBO!

PELICAN POINT=PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5
The title says it all! Perfect pool, perfect amenities , perfect guesthouse, perfect sunsets, perfect getaway.
My husband and I have not vacationed on the Outer Banks for at least eleven years, Pelican Point was the property we needed for re-entry! The snowy winter at our Jersey Shore, was forgotten the minute we saw Pelican Point.
We walked out to the sound via the beautiful dock and we were welcomed by pelicans, fiddler crabs and red winged blackbirds. The owners thought of everything:)
We dined on local seafood, explored the outlets,, on the one cloudy day we had! The swimming pool was clear and welcoming after shopping!
The only suggestion we have would be window screens in the guesthouse so you can take advantage of the wonderful evening breeze.
Thank you for sharing your home!

A Memorable Experience!

  • 5 of 5
We loved vacationing at Pelican Point! This property lived up to its billing and more! The home was immaculate and the kitchen was well stocked with everything that we needed for cooking meals. We were a group of four adults and two children - and everyone raved about the comfort of the rooms, the wonderful pier (which made the beautiful sunsets even more picturesque), the pool table and the swimming pool. The guesthouse is also a great feature - an added plus. We tried a few of the local eating establishments; Lisa's Pizzeria was great and we also enjoyed the sandwiches at Waves Market. We would definitely vacation here again. Dealing with the owners (in arranging for our visit) was also a plus - they were quick to respond to any inquiry and even provided a welcome pack and a binder (at the home) which was full of useful information. If you're looking for a relaxing vacation at a beautiful and spacious home, then this is the place for you. A real gem and a great way to experience the Outer Banks. We can't wait to return.

We Will Be Back!

  • 5 of 5
Thanks so much for a great vacation. We stayed here with 12 people total and had a fantastic time. It is, by far, the nicest place we’ve ever stayed at on the Outer Banks. It’s a wonderful home away from home with a well-equipped kitchen, flexible sleeping arrangements, and pretty seaside décor in every room. The owners provided a high chair, pack-n-play, and plenty of games and books to keep the kids amused. They were also easy to work with and very helpful and sent us a welcome pack with lots of information and things to do before we arrived. In addition to that, the home’s many great features blew us away. The dock was an awesome place to hang out. We enjoyed watching wildlife and water sports from there as well as doing some fishing, crabbing and kayaking ourselves. The seating and table at the end was an idyllic spot to watch the sunset which was one of the highlights of our trip. The pool and hot tub were awesome to come back to after a hot day on the beach and was a terrific place to relax with the smaller kids (and some of the bigger ones too!). The pool house with pool toys, beach chairs, bathroom, and outdoor shower was perfect to prevent sand and slippery feet in and out of the house. The guest house with pool table and flat screen TVs was a big hit with the older kids and gave them their own space but was close enough for them to feel included. And the beach was just a short walk across the road and was never crowded which we loved. There was so much to do we really couldn't fit it all in in one trip. So, we will definitely be back, and this is where we will stay. We felt very lucky to be able to share this wonderful home. Thanks!

Fun time

  • 4 of 5
We really enjoyed our vacation at Pelican Point. Considering our group included toddlers, teenagers adults and a senior, it had features to please everyone. We especially appreciated the easy access to the Sound and the pool. The house is definately not as new as others we have seen, and we thought some of the carpets and furniture could stand to be replaced. The landscaping was a little messy as well. Overall, it was a fun house in a great location.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, we're pleased that you really enjoyed your stay and the easy access to the sound and the pool!

We're very sorry to hear that you felt some of the furniture and carpets needed to be replaced and hope this did not affect your enjoyment of the house and surroundings. Please note that we furnished the house with all new furniture in 2011 but after your feedback we will ask our property management company Shore Details to check all the furniture and carpets. We will also ask them to thoroughly check the landscaping and correct any problems. In addition we will double-check all these points on our next visit later this fall. On the age of the house, please note that we try to make it clear in our VRBO description and photos that Pelican Point is a traditional Hatteras cottage that has been thoroughly remodeled and updated - our aim was to combine the charm of a traditional cottage with the comforts of today.

Thank you again for your feedback - we will address everything you noted and are glad you really enjoyed your stay!
