JAPANESE HOUSE IN BIG SUR

This was a beautiful house we had the pleasure to stay at. You walk into the garden and know this can be a place to relax for a few days. Once you enter the house, you see how much work has been done to make you feel at home.

There were two couples that stayed here which worked out great as the bedrooms are on separate ends of the house with two separate bathrooms. The master is a large beautiful bedroom with the second a bit smaller but no worries as you don't do much but sleep there anyway.

The gardens and balconies are amazing. Very relaxing and secluded area to enjoy each others company. We were able to cook all meals at the location which gave us more time to enjoy.

The house is situated near all of the parks, beaches, and attractions in Big Sur. Very easy drive to anywhere you wanted to go.

I highly recommend the house and enjoyed the peace and quite it gave us.

We stayed at the Japanese House over Labor Day weekend and would like to post our findings.
Pros: A very private one in a wooded setting. Wonderful outdoor living areas. Within a mile of one of the nicest Big Sur beaches. Large master suite and very nice soaking tub. Very nice owner who made renting easy with a property caretaker to answer questions locally.
Cons: very steep, single-lane driveway is a little scary although only two houses on it and only one encounter with another vehicle over 4 days. Kitchen pots and pans are old and few in number. Utensils (serving spoons, spatulas, scrapers, peelers) are very limited. Serious cooks should bring their own, or eat out. Cool evenings would have welcomed a few warmer blankets for beds. Entering the house through the master bath is inconvenient and awkward. There is a front door but it has been screwed shut. There are no accessible trash/recycle cans. With 4 adults needed to empty bins before end of stay. Caretaker took away but no where to put dog poop. Not a huge deal, just annoying
All in all, a restful, quiet stay.

Pros:
The house was clean and ready upon arrival
The location, quality, and outside living areas.
The close proximity to one of the nicest beaches in Big Sur.
The house is centrally located to all the amenities one might need during your stay.
Lots of personal touches lend warmth and a homey feel.
The large master bedroom.
Cons:
The front door entering thru the master bath is weird and detracts from the livability.
The kitchen lacks some basic utensils (serving spoons, rubber scrapers, etc) and the pots and pans are few in number and largely old and worn. If you plan on really cooking, I would suggest bringing what you need.
We couldn't find garbage or recycle cans outside. With four adults living in the house we generated garbage and recycling and had no where to put it. We had to call the property caretaker to come get it as leaving it outside in the woods did not seem wise.
The house could use several more blankets for the beds as the ones provided are thin and light.
