About Jerry Coffer

I am a retired engineer, now managing the vacation rental business and operating the Zigzag Mountain Store and Cafe on Mt Hood

Jerry Coffer purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Jerry Coffer chose Brightwood

I have built cabins in the area on weekends for the last 15 years.

What makes this cabin unique

It is one of the most pleasant environments I have found in my 15 years on the mountain with the pristine salmon river, large river rocks and old growth trees. The sound of the river offers a unique peace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Such a nice setting. There are many rivers on the mountain, but this one seems to be the nicest.

I walked down to the river over, finding peace sitting on a large rock that is on the river.

While there I saw a lot of interesting birds just flying up and down the river perhaps for no reason, perhaps migrating or searching for food from the water.

Some would stop in the big pool and dive for food I guess. Larger geese flew overhead for some reason following the steam as it curved in upstream and downstream.

Then I looked into the water since it was clear and looked for life there. I saw a lot of small fish, perhaps salmon minnows or trout. I don't know my fish that well. Then, wow a large fish maybe three feet long silver looking. It stayed right next to my rock for a long time. I was quiet and did not disturb it. I think when the fish run, there would be a lot of these. I have to find when that is and come back to see them.

I thought its a bit hot today and braved entering the river. So early in the summer I found the river was cold but I still loved the feeling of entering into the field of the fish. Then quickly out again.

I looked around me. It was like being in the place before people occupied the space. There were no stumps indicating tree harvest. The trees were so large compared to other trees around the mountain. They must have been there from the beginning of time.

Later I took a walk to the big town of Brightwood: a convenience store and a tavern. Bought a coke from the store and hung around outside drinking it.

Then I went across the street to this old log cabin looking tavern. Very rustic inside, but very popular with the local people. I had a beer and played some pool with a local.

I returned to the cabin, such a nice feel there. All equipped with the modern stuff including dishwasher, laundry etc and very comfortable couches and yet rustic in nature. I cooked a meal and rested on the couch watching a movie until I was sleepy.

Then I decided to sleep out in the gazebo because I loved the feel of the river. I opened the window facing the river and it sung me to sleep. I woke up the next morning feeling so refreshed.

I felt like a new person the next day. Thanks Jerry for such a magical time.

Wonderful Time at the Rivers Nest

  • 5 of 5

Happy friends day. We had such an amazing time here at the Rivers Nest.

Spending time with friends and singing songs around the fireplace. Weather was less than pleasant. We were happy to have such a warm and comforting lodge to come back to and play games. We had such a great time here and its definitely one we will not forget.

The cabin is radical.

I had many a really nice walk to the river. Especially loved the hot tub and James had the gazebo. But I loved reading there in the afternoon, sound of the river and quiet. Thanks for everything.

What a Delightful Time

  • 5 of 5

The cozy fireplace, spectacular view from the deck and relaxing spa comb ined to create the perfect Mt Hood National Forest experience. We'll be writing raving reviews about the Rivers Nest.

From this key location we visited a bunch of restaurants in the nearby area. Some great, some just interesting. Visited Timberline as did almost everyone else at the mountain. A great structure of heavy rocks and timber. You wonder just how they got it all together.

Did some hiking. They told me at the Zigzag Ranger station it was the start of mushroom season. I guess maybe it was just the start, because I did not see but a couple of ones that were not in my safe to eat book. But the hikes were beautiful and the people at the ranger station were very nice.

Cabin Was PERFECT

  • 5 of 5

Loved the easy access to the River where we got in some wading. The hot tub was a great way to end our first day. Skiing at Timberline too. Cafe in Zigzag was delicious. Thanks for allowing us to have the perfect weekend and we look forward to our next visit.

I really appreciate the view of the stream. The big old trees growing on the bank.

You cannot find sure a sight anymore.
