About Jerry Coffer

I am a retired engineer, now managing the vacation rental business and operating the Zigzag Mountain Store and Cafe on Mt Hood

Jerry Coffer purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Jerry Coffer chose Brightwood

I have built cabins in the area on weekends for the last 15 years.

What makes this cabin unique

It is one of the most pleasant environments I have found in my 15 years on the mountain with the pristine salmon river, large river rocks and old growth trees. The sound of the river offers a unique peace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Such a nice setting. There are many rivers on the mountain, but this one seems to be the nicest.

I walked down to the river over, finding peace sitting on a large rock that is on the river.

While there I saw a lot of interesting birds just flying up and down the river perhaps for no reason, perhaps migrating or searching for food from the water.

Some would stop in the big pool and dive for food I guess. Larger geese flew overhead for some reason following the steam as it curved in upstream and downstream.

Then I looked into the water since it was clear and looked for life there. I saw a lot of small fish, perhaps salmon minnows or trout. I don't know my fish that well. Then, wow a large fish maybe three feet long silver looking. It stayed right next to my rock for a long time. I was quiet and did not disturb it. I think when the fish run, there would be a lot of these. I have to find when that is and come back to see them.

I thought its a bit hot today and braved entering the river. So early in the summer I found the river was cold but I still loved the feeling of entering into the field of the fish. Then quickly out again.

I looked around me. It was like being in the place before people occupied the space. There were no stumps indicating tree harvest. The trees were so large compared to other trees around the mountain. They must have been there from the beginning of time.

Later I took a walk to the big town of Brightwood: a convenience store and a tavern. Bought a coke from the store and hung around outside drinking it.

Then I went across the street to this old log cabin looking tavern. Very rustic inside, but very popular with the local people. I had a beer and played some pool with a local.

I returned to the cabin, such a nice feel there. All equipped with the modern stuff including dishwasher, laundry etc and very comfortable couches and yet rustic in nature. I cooked a meal and rested on the couch watching a movie until I was sleepy.

Then I decided to sleep out in the gazebo because I loved the feel of the river. I opened the window facing the river and it sung me to sleep. I woke up the next morning feeling so refreshed.

I felt like a new person the next day. Thanks Jerry for such a magical time.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

  • 1 of 5
Good: beautiful Salmon river frontage. Very steep slippery path to the river but so worth it if you can make it. Beautiful river rock fireplace. The gazebo was fun to sleep in for the kids, but the electrical to everything is just plain scary.

The bad: Where do I begin:
It looks like a shack. Rotting foundation. Soft floors.
Shower was just a plastic wobbly enclosure without a frame, so it literally was cracked with holes and unsteady to stand in. We were given 2 rolls of T.P. to last 3 days. The liquid dish soap had so much water added to it that it lasted 1 washing up. (we had to rewash all the dishes before we could eat.)

"Bedroom" is just an enclosed step down porch with a mattress and boxsprings on the floor.
The linens were sour smelling, very old towels, comforters and stained washcloths. The dishwasher was full of mold and obviously non functional for a long time.

The only smoke detector in the whole house was broken. None in the exterior gazebo room. Owner phoned and he did bring some, but declined to install on the ceiling where they would actually work. (nice guy but just seemed oblivious and over worked)

The hot tub had lots of mildew inside and the jets didnt work and the wooden framing was rotting away. The owner said they empty and fill it for each tenant, but it had no chemicals and the inside was never cleaned. So.....

Other stuff: Couches dirty, floors dirty in the corners but otherwise ok. The deck was very slippery with mildew and the rails to the decking were very wobbly in places.

The Ugly: dingy terry robes in the closet.....: ( The heaters all had burn marks on them and there were random holes in the walls with random electrical wiring going to nothing.
I noticed the guest book said all of the above, but yet not on this site, makes one wonder if all these reviews are real.

I felt like the owner was a nice guy but just didnt have a clue.

Breathtaking River view, hot tub on the deck..we can not wait to stay here again!

  • 5 of 5
A few friends and I stayed here fri 2/21-sun 2/22 the one bedroom inside was very large and the living room quite spacious. All the kitchen appliances worked great and it was so nice having a washer and dryer at the cabin, the very nice owner Jerry even stocked extra towels for my friends and I and he was very friendly to talk to about booking the cabin and answering any questions we had about his rental. The hot tub outside on the deck WAS AMAZING and was clean ready to jump in when we arrived and words can not describe how beautiful the River is that this cabin looks over and the walk down to the River is literally about one min, the view, the walk down to the River & the peaceful, comforting sounds of the River just so perfect, it's a "million dollar view"!!!The extra "outside" bedroom was a really neat addition and handy out there on the deck! it has a tv in it and a heater and full size bed. We all can not wait to stay here again!!!!thank you so much Jerry we had such an unforgettable stay at your cabin!!!

Relaxing

  • 5 of 5
Than you for having us. We seriously enjoyed getting away from the city and relaxing.

When I was very young we lived in the mountain is Utah. This place reminded me so much of that time. We lived next the the river and spent every day on the river swimming, fishing and hiking during the summer.

This trip it all came back to me and I felt so much peace here.

We did get out too. Did a lot of hiking. Mirror lake and the rest. We found them all at the Forest Service. Hit some restaurants.

The Mirror lake hike was the best. The trail was just over a mile perhaps, but steep so we got some good exercise. Then when we got there, it was a weekday and just a few people around the lake. We casually hiked around the lake and when we got to the far side we looked at the lake and there was a mirror image of the grand Mt Hood the weather was still and we could not believe how clear the image was. Even though we were not prepared, we decided to spend the night up there and view it again in the morning.

Also went to the Resort for a little golfing.

Then back to the trails to Ramona Falls. A nice place still not beating the Mirror Lake experience.

Than back to the cabin for more relaxing and memories.

We plan to come back to your place very often.

Thanks.
