Although children love the Blackthorne, the home may not be suitable for young children as there are many stairs and balconies.
“Which brings us to treehouses. At their simplest they are for kids, at their most complex, for Tarzan and Jane. Or they were until The Blackthorne.”
Robert Ragaini, The Boston Sunday Globe
My name is Robert Galliani. I am a 3rd generation San Franciscan. My wife of 23 years and I have three children ages 20, 18 and 16. We happily and very fortunately live in a beautiful place called Marin County California where our lives are intertwined and revolve around our children. We bought The Blackthorne and continually improve it. We invite people to rent it nightly and weekly to experience this unique, one-of-a-kind, hand made home, which we will keep in our family for generations.
Robert Galliani purchased this house in 2010
In 1975 a friend of mine who was a Princeton educated engineer and his wife bought a spectacular acre of land next to the Point Reyes National Seashore halfway between the village of Inverness CA and the town of Point Reyes CA. (1 hour from San Francisco). With the help of master craftsmen, he built a spectacular 4-story wood crafted 'castle' resembling a giant tree house that his wife named 'Blackthorne' after the main character in James Clavell's novel SHOGUN. From 1982 to October 2010 they ran it as a very successful and famous B&B. We bought it because the location is heaven on earth. The house is placed adjacent to a a national park surrounded and minutes from some of the best beaches in the world as well as the quaint town of Point Reyes with its fine restaurants and shops and the village of Inverness. 100,000 acres of national park covered with hiking trails is at our doorstep while Tomales Bay is 8 houses down the street and the city of San Francisco is a one hour drive away.
I do not even know where to begin with how perfect our 4 night stay for my 50th Birthday Celebration was made because of the magical surroundings of the Blackthorne. I originally wanted to book a unique stay in a Lighthouse for my party weekend and just happened upon the Blackthorne in my internet research. I booked the Blackthorne after seeing the website and listing on the rental site. I sent the owner Robert an email then my husband called and gave a deposit about 10 months in advance because we know Memorial day weekend would be a big one for week-end getaways, weddings and vacationers too! Have to say I always think the sites with photos and professional videos have a way of exaggerating the beauty of a place, but not in the case of Blackthorn. It is truly beautiful. At the end of the street is a market called Perry’s with a fabulous Deli and a short drive to Pont Reyes Station where there are several very good restaurants, like the Station House, Stellina and the Cowgirl Creamery. We didn’t get into the Bovine Bakery, but based upon the length of the line, I would say it must be pretty good too. A few miles away is the Bear Valley Visitor’s Center where you can obtain a permit for a beach bonfire, which we did at Limantour Beach. Drakes Bay Oysters is about 10 miles away and Hog Island Oysters is about the same in the other direction. There are so many things to do in the area, or you could do nothing but enjoy he tranquility that surrounds this magical home. The personality the home has in unmeasurable. . The price is remarkable considering the fact that I have spent the same for mediocre 2-3 bedroom homes in the non-private not so tranquil Dillon’s Beach and Bodega Bay areas. The 4 floors of fabulousness with tranquility and so much outdoor living space is fabulous. The home was also stocked with so many dishes and spices, we brought out own napkins, saran wrap, foil, garbage bags, shampoo and extra t.p., but one would not need to as they even had those there. The little touches like super lux soft throws on the sofas and books and movie were very appreciated. Basically this is home is a work of art with some architectural fabulousness everywhere you look. It is lovely to wake to birds singing and the fresh due and amazing to sit on any one of the many expansive porches during the sunny day hours and in the welcoming Jacuzzi in the evening. Just Heavenly!
The Blackthorne Inn is truly paradise. This architectural wonder is the perfect place to gather with family. We loved the huge fireplace under the equally huge sky light nestled under a canopy of towering trees; the hot tub, the all glass lookout "nest" room, the sun room and deck. Hosted by the gracious Robert and well tended by the grounds crew, the Blackthorne makes you feel like you’re perched in a treehouse in the forest, but you’re only a short walk down the hill from a first class gourmet food store, and perhaps two miles from the fabulous Point Reyes Station with several great restaurants and terrific boutique art galleries and clothing stores. We hesitate to write more to help insure we’ll be able to secure a reservation for ourselves when we want to come back in the future. Plan ahead! The Blackthorne Inn is one of the very most desirable lodgings in this very popular vacation area.
My co-workers and I went here for a staff retreat in April of 2013, and it was truly dazzling. We work for a small non-profit with mentally ill people, so we really need to relax on our retreats, and this was prefect. The aesthetics of the home were straight out of a Tolkien elven village! The beds were very comfortable. The only thing I should say is that if you are very prone to motion sickness do not stay in the top room, the round one, because it sways ever so slightly. I stayed in that room, and just loved it, but some of my older co-workers were a little nervous about it, fyi-put the youngsters in that room. The kitchen was very well equipped, and we have some very fine chefs, in fact several of my co-workers have done professional cooking in the past, and were impressed with the kitchen. The owner was very kind, and easy to deal with. I highly recommend this lovely place!!!
Family and friends gathered together for a delightful week and an enchanting New Year's Celebration! This magical house is nestled among hundreds of trees, immaculately groomed gardens, and massive wood decks; each level leading to the next treasure. It has lovely guest rooms and beautiful features that took us days to fully discover. We enjoyed our days at Drakes Beach, lunches in Pt. Reyes Station and in SF, dinners around the hearty table followed by cozy fires at the hearth with games, movies, s'mores, and fun conversation. The pleasant Blackthorne caretaker kept the firewood well-stocked and the spa nicely heated. Blackthorne was the perfect setting for our happy gathering. This spectacular home is most memorable and we look forward to returning!
My five siblings and spouses, 11 in all, recently returned from a reunion at the Blackthorne Inn. We had all seen the pictures and the video but this wonderful residence exceeded all our expectations. We enjoyed especially the top deck, soaking in the hot tub while birds flew and chattered in the trees. We enjoyed long catch-up visits in the beautifully appointed living room. We enjoyed our breakfasts on the deck in the crisp morning air. In fact, in general, the architecture of Blackthorne as it climbs up the hillside and the ready access to beautiful decks on all levels made us feel close to the trees, the animals and the natural surroundings. All furnishings and appointments were interesting and beautiful. The workmanship in many details was a pleasure to behold; i.e., the stone fireplace, the revolving door at the top of the circular stairs; the stained glass windows -- amazing! The kitchen where we prepared breakfasts and a dinner was stocked with everything one could ever need. Each bedroom space was lovely and unique and allowed all of us to find just the one that suited. I read the history of Blackthorne which was provided and it was thrilling to me as a NorCal resident to learn of all the historical bits and pieces that have been found and lovingly incorporated into the building. Blackthorne is so centrally located, we were able to enjoy Limantour Beach in the Pt. Reyes National Seashore. Other favorite easy-to-reach places we explored were Stinson Beach and Muir Woods. The beauty of this wonderful place truly provided an ambience of relaxation and pleasure that made our time together extra special. We were there just three nights and it wasn't enough. Everyone wanted to make this magical place a yearly event.
We had the pleasure of staying here for the labor day weekend in 2013 and while the photos made the place look magical - it was even better! The common areas were great for socializing, and the rooms private enough to let one escape when it got late or you just needed a nap. The eagle's nest was absolutely stunning (though the occupants were very grateful for the blinds - it gets sun early!). 5 of the six rooms also accommodated babies (8m-4y) and while the house is not childproofed, we had no troubles at all. Our little toddlers were able to crawl, walk, and run about quite safely (with close adult supervision at all times of course!) and there was a nice box of blocks and infant-appropriate toys - a sweet little bonus! The stairs would likely be an obstacle to the elderly, frail or otherwise disabled - there are lots of 'em.
We hope to come back. This place was really amazing
