Framed by towering Georgia pines and marshes the Tybee Bluebird overlooks Horse Pen Creek and the Back River. The main living quarters on the ground floor are made up of two army barracks, which were moved from historic Fort Screven in the 1940’s. George McDonald, an original girl scout who served under Juliette Gordon Low, purchased the cottage in the 1970’s. George was a spirited woman, a retired teacher who was very community focused. She was instrumental in getting Tybee’s named changed back from “Savannah Beach” to “Tybee”, as well as being a primary leader in initiating the restoration of the Tybee Lighthouse. George added the second floor, which now serves as the bed & breakfast suite, for her sister, Caroline. George and Caroline enjoyed living in their marsh cottage until the late 1990’s. The current owner, your hostess, Shirley, hopes to provide a wonderful experience for travelers who appreciate helpfulness but also value their privacy.
Your cozy cottage suite (with private entrance) is spacious and includes a living area with satellite TV, wi-fi access, a variety of books; and a refrigerator, coffee maker, & microwave. Bedroom includes a king sized bed, private shower, closet & and a sitting area.
A variety of birdhouses, garden art, and wind chimes add whimsical touches as you experience breathtaking sunsets overlooking the marsh, Horse Pen Creek, & the Back River. The location is central to the Back River fishing pier, the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, the beach, a variety of restaurants, art museums and shops. Bring your bike or rent one for an enjoyable way to sightsee around our small island.
The view is sensational and can be enjoyed from each room. At high tide the marsh is covered with water and in addition to enjoying watching boaters, or kayaks passing by, it’s relaxing to watch the fish jumping or the occasional serendipitous glimpse of dolphins frolicking in the waters.

The Bluebird was as described, clean, quiet and very comfortable. The marsh view was very enjoyable and peaceful. Shirley was great to work with before and during our stay. We would not hesitate to stay there again and hope to.
My husband and I stayed here for two nights and had a wonderful time. We had a bit of an issue with the air conditioning, but Shirley went out of her way to make sure we were comfy during our visit. She contacted us the night before our arrival to let us know there was an issue, but she was able to get the a/c fixed the following afternoon. Extra fans were provided until the a/c was able to cool the unit. She definitely went out of her way to accommodate us, and we appreciated her kindness tremendously. I just wish we could have stayed longer, but hopefully, we can make a future visit. We thought we would miss being beachside, but that wasn't an issue at all. The marsh side of the island was very peaceful and relaxing and just what we needed.
We have stayed at the Bluebird B&B for eleven springtimes. It's like coming home each time we park in front of the B&B. Shirley continues to make this such a welcoming place, with her special touches and with her great smile. We feel like old friends after all these years. Whether seated on the porch overlooking the marsh, or on the sunlit couches, this is a place of quiet rest and relaxation. An easy walk to the beach - or to the Episcopal church- fills each day with good steps and amazing bird songs along the way. The Bluebird B&B personifies the words "Tybee Time".
My husband and I rented the Bluebird for three nights. He is leaving for deployment soon, so we really needed a quiet relaxing place to get away. Nothing fancy, but lots of charm. Shirley, the owner, was a joy to talk to and made sure we had everything we needed. The place is clean and the furniture was very comfortable, and there is a lot of privacy. We walked everywhere, about 5 min. to AJ's and about 10 min walk to other places so it was very convenient. I really enjoyed the beautiful sunsets! Will be back :-)
We rented this lovely cottage for a weekend away and enjoyed it thoroughly. We were blessed with gorgeous weather, which we couldn't normally count on in February. The cottage is definitely full of charm and cottage style. If you are looking for sleek luxury, this probably isn't it, but if you are looking for unpretentious comfort, this is perfect!
I've become the Bluebird B&B's biggest fan, I believe. This was my third visit to the Bluebird and, as always, my stay felt like coming home. The apartment feels cozy and welcoming from the moment I open the door and there seems to always be something new and different to see. Plenty of books and magazines to read, comfy furniture and the breakfast basket makes it complete. And the delightful Shirley is the most gracious and completely southern hostess you could ever wish for! Already looking forward to my next trip!
