BEAUTIFUL LAKEHOUSE IN NORTH CENTRAL FLORIDA

Hawthorne House Rental Photos and Description

3/3 nature retreat, (Sleeps 7) One week minimum rental

Enjoy the rejuvenating peacefulness of nature at this comfortable retreat. 79 acres of lakes and grassland and 18 acres of adjacent woods make this beautiful spot a great place to relax and recharge. Sunsets are often glorious and the night sky, vast and without light pollution, is magnificent.

The three bedroom, three bath house is spacious and welcoming, with a second large living area for playing games or spreading out projects. The 15 by 35 screen porch is a perfect place to catch a bit of breeze with a cool drink and appreciate the quiet, interrupted occasionally, perhaps, by the loud calls of the Sandhill Cranes who also call this their territory.

Three kinds of woodpeckers, Barred Owls and an osprey are just a few of the frequently sighted large birds who, along with dozens of kinds of small birds might be spotted during a walk in the woods. For more strenuous exercise, there is a private tennis court on site, and the location is convenient to dozens of popular recreation areas. The Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail welcomes hikers, bicyclists, skaters and horseback riders. For kayaking and canoeing the Ocklawaha River, and, a little further, but worth the trip, the salt marshes at Cedar Key, are highly recommended. Swimmers, snorkelers and divers have a wide selection of freshwater options nearby, including Silver Springs and several springs in the Ocala National Forest.

For a culture fix, downtown Gainesville and the University of Florida, with museums, theater and a wide variety of performances are an easy 45 minutes away. Larger concert venues in downtown Jacksonville can be reached in about an hour and a half and the International Drive exit from the Florida Turnpike in Orlando is two hours from the house. St. Augustine’s historic sites and museums are a bit closer than central Jacksonville.

St. Augustine, Orlando and Jacksonville are also destinations for shoppers. Much closer, for those whose interest is antiques, are the shops of Micanopy, which can be reached in a little over half an hour when we share the back road route, which we will.

The house has an attached carport with two bays as well as onsite outdoor parking for four more cars or trailers.

WE WILL BE BACK

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I, and our Golden Retriever spent nearly four months at the Lake House from early 2014 to May 1 2014. We enjoyed both the house and the surrounding area very much. As someone said in an earlier review, “the pictures don’t do the house justice.” I am not sure why that it true; the pictures accurately show the house. I concluded that there must be some type of Gestalt effect where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It is a large house which looks even larger because of the windows. Nearly every room has large windows looking out onto the surrounding property, and the porch has fine mesh screen giving the illusion of looking through glass.
As the photos show, there are two ponds close to the house and large open areas near the ponds. Our dog enjoyed the pond and watching the ample wild life: Sand Hill Cranes, deer, hawks, etc. She did resent the occasional visits to her pond by a small gator. If you are interested in star gazing, the property affords a perfect place to view stars: no pollution and an absence of “city lights.” It is a great area for walking, and our dog and I walked a couple of miles every day. Although we don’t play tennis, there is a first rate tennis court fairly close to the house.
Because we stayed for a long period of time, we were able to get to know the area quite well. I joined a small, but totally adequate health club in the nearby town of Hawthorne. We even got to attend a chile cook off in Melrose, another nearby town. For a nominal charge, you could sample any or all of the twenty entries in the cook off. The library in Melrose is small, but has a great paperback book exchange. There are two good restaurants in Melrose: The Blue Water Restaurant and Betty’s Pizza and Subs. Both have websites, and Betty’s has very good pizza. Easily our favorite restaurant, however, was Johnny’s B BQ in another small town in the area. It too has a website.
For those who need the attractions of a larger town, Gainesville is a very easy drive. We ended up going to Gainesville far more frequently than we wished. My wife began to develop severe headaches, and we made numerous trips to the University of Florida’s medical school. Her problems had nothing to do with the house or the area. Instead, we discovered that she had Temporal Arteritis. Thankfully, the hospital at the University of Florida is a teaching hospital with numerous high qualit

Owner's Response: We enjoyed sharing the property with the two of you and the exuberant Annie. We were particularly impressed with your engagement with the community and excellent use of the resources in our area. Most importantly, we hope your wife enjoys a complete recovery from her recent health problems. FYI, the young gator has been relocated to a conservation area.

The home & the property is just beautiful! WOW! It has everything any home would have and than some...all you have to pack is your clothes n bath products and stop at the local store in Melrose or Hawthorne for food. We lived in Hawthorne for almost 20 yrs, so we know the area well and still love it there n have family there. We had a huge family reunion for thanksgiving, this home was prefect for us coming from out of town that haven't seen each other in months n wanted to stay together. Prefect home for group/family/couples get togethers. The game room came in very handy, at first I thought it was just wasted space but a few days of our week there it rained n we were stuck inside, we got good uses of it than. It was also our dinning room since there was so many of us and the table in the family room/kitchen/dinning room only seated 4. I loved that all 3 BR had its own bath n outside doors to its own semi private outside space, saw lots of deers. Beautiful! The only thing I didn't like about the home n was a little uncomfortable about was, there was no draps or blinds on any of the windows or doors in the house, bedrooms especially. I can see not having them in the family room or game room, I wouldn't want to block that beautiful view either but the BR's needed them badly for privacy. The 3rd BR we had to go into the bathroom n close the door to get dressed n undressed cause the closet wasn't a walk in. In the master BR n one of the front Bedrooms you have huge walk in closets for dressing and undressing. The windows in the master bath didn't have blinds either, just a brick wall outside blocking the windows. The only other downside is it only has 2 TV's, one in the family room & master BR, would have been nice if all 3 BR's had one since it is such a big home and can handle more than one family or 3 couples. But The no blinds n TV's wasn't a deal breaker for us, we loved the house n outside space so much that it kinda made up for not having the extra TV's n blinds..we would rent this home again in a heart beat. All the beds were very comfortable. The home also has a fireplace, that we got to use while we were there just about every night, it was in the 30's. Very romantic for a couples retreat and cozy for the family's. Loved it!!! To me the best thing about this home since we live in the city was the private location & the peace n quiet that we were looking for. There were neighbors but they were not right next door like in the city. Just Beautiful!!

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

  • 5 of 5
We rented this property for our family members who were traveling down to attend our daughters wedding. They were blown away by the beauty and comfort of this home and the surrounding area. They enjoyed their stay so much that they didn't want to leave.

The home and property were well cared for and clean. The owners were wonderful and went way beyond our expectations to assure our stay was an enjoyable one. Their kindness and generosity will not be forgotten. I will be recommending this property to my family and friends.

Nearby (in the town of Melrose) there is a small grocery store, a seafood restaurant (cannot remember the name....sorry) and Betty's pizza (excellent pizza), a bank, gas station, Ace hardware, and an antique store and farmers market. On down hwy 21 is a Harvey's supermarket, and a Dollar General. Heading into the next town of Keystone Heights, there is a Hardee's, Mc Donald's, Wendy's, Walgreen's, CVS, Bealls Outlet, Family Dollar, Laredo's Mexican restaurant, Johnny's Bar B Q Restaurant, Subway, Hitchcocks Supermarket, M&S Bank, Capitol City Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, a bait shop and 3 auto supply stores (Napa, Auto Zone, and Discount Auto) .

COMFORTABLE FAMILY SETTING

  • 5 of 5
Our family was celebrating the UF graduation of our niece; the location of house was remote, yet very private. We were very comfortable with the size of the house and the distribution of the rooms- it rained the entire weekend, except for some sunshine on Saturday afternoon- this allowed us to take some beautiful photos by the lake and large oak trees. The owners were gracious enough to allow us some extra check-out time on Sunday, due to the weather. All in all, we commented that it would be nice to return to your home, because of the beautiful surroundings and how comfortable everyone felt. Thank you.

FAMILY WEEKEND

  • 5 of 5
My wife, two sons along with my parents, my sister and my two nieces spent a great 4 day weekend together. I just want to say that the home was more than we would have ever expected, as soon as we arrived and walked around to the back of the house we just looked at each other and said this place is beautifull. We would have stayed a year if we could have! Thank you for sharing your house with us and my dogs loved running down to the lake and swiming in the pond. Your home is on our list of repeat vacations. We also had a great meal at Betty's Pizza! very friendly and the food was very good, all around it was a great weekend!!

GREAT GETAWAY IN A SLICE OF HEAVEN

  • 5 of 5
I had to bring my dog to the University of Florida Vet school for analysis and was thrilled to stay here instead of a hotel. The photos do not do the home justice! It is a lovely, peaceful remote location with 3 lakes, trees and wildlife all around. Deer, giant cranes, squirrels and an assortment. I loved my hour walks 3 times a day around the lakes with my dogs trained to stay near me but running free. We all had a great time. Short 45 minute drive to Gainesville for vet visits in between. Owners are great. Huge home. I spent most of my time listening to the wind and birds and just watching the light over the great lake to the side of the home with my dogs by my side. I am not disabled, but the home seems to be optimal for someone needing wheelchair or other disability accomodations.
