Overview

Lamoine Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Rusticate in style! Enjoy a carefree and relaxing Maine vacation at Fox Hollow Farm. This comfortably elegant antique farmhouse is fully equipped with all modern conveniences--cable, wi-fi, full country kitchen--plus games and books for cozy evenings, and much more. The decor is elegant, cheerful and comfortable. Surrounded by woods and fruit trees with tidal views of Raccoon Cove and the mountains of Acadia National Park, the house is serene and secluded, yet it’s perfectly situated for exploring...it's a short walk or bike ride down a quiet country road to sandy beaches and a local swimming hole; you can explore the shoreline and islands of Frenchman’s Bay by kayak or sailboat; and Acadia National Park is under a half-hour away. Visit the Farm when you're ready to slow down and enjoy a perfect vacation in Down East Maine.

Inside the House: The story goes that the sunroom was originally the General Store for the area in the late 1700s; the shelves today display vintage glassware. The sunroom is a bright and cheerful room to curl up with a book in the wicker chair or sort your seashells. You'll also find croquet, bocce ball, and horseshoes to take out on the lawn. The adjacent mudroom has a washer/dryer, ironing board, and iron. The kitchen is a terrific family hangout, with bench seats around the kitchen table and a moose chandelier, exposed antique wooden beams along with beautiful views of Raccoon Cove and Sargeant Mountain. The living room, den, and dining room are off the kitchen. Each room is painted a different color. Vintage furniture includes incredibly comfy couches, a large desk, and seating for up to six.

Outside: The farmhouse is on two+ acres surrounded by open grass and a big red barn, without a neighbor in sight. A front porch under the lilacs provides a serene spot to relax in one of the Adirondack chairs and take in the amazing view. The new back patio is a delightful location for evening gatherings and barbecues. A colorful, fragrant perennial garden attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. The wildlife here is phenomenal: you’re likely to spot eagles and osprey soaring overhead, and a variety of warblers in the woods. We’ve also seen moose and foxes on the property. Come dusk, you may hear the drumming of a grouse or the ethereal song of a thrush. Fireflies and crickets provide lively evening entertainment. And if you’re here in the fall, the autumn foliage is spectacular. Outdoor amenities also include a picnic table, a charcoal barbecue, kayaks, bicycles, and beach chairs, coolers, and clamming equipment you can take to the nearby beaches.

Some of our prior guests' comments:

'This was truly one of our most wonderful family vacations. The farmhouse is gorgeous, the property lovely and the location absolutely perfect.'

'Family meals in the kitchen, frisbee in the yard, and Lamoine State Beach were excellent things to do. Thank you for your tasteful and welcoming place.'

'What a great place! We loved exploring the house and yard. The kids picked raspberries along the periphery, and we had a terrific football game in front of the barn.'

'We feel like we've found a real jewel. None of us was ready to leave, and we can't wait to come back!'

About Phillip and Lee

We fell in love with Maine a few years ago when Lee's Mom moved to the area. Even though we both grew up in California, we each have family roots in New England and we feel a deep connection to the region. We're currently splitting our time between San Francisco and the farmhouse.

Phillip and Lee purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Phillip and Lee chose Lamoine

Having been longtime renters in San Francisco, we wanted a home to call our own. In the summer of 2004 we became lost on the way to Lamoine Beach, and found this house for sale. Lee still plans to actually farm the land one day, when she quits her day job!

What makes this farmhouse unique

This house has an undeniably positive energy about it. Every year that we return we recognize it. Whether it's something about the layout of the house, its southerly orientation facing Sargeant Mountain, or something deep in the old wood rafters and beams, this house instills a sense of peace, wholeness, and joy. We can't help but imagine the many generations of families and friends here over the years have felt the same way.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you, as always, for lending us your lovely and welcoming home. For one week a year it has become our home away from home, a refuge from the trials and sadness of life. We greet this house joyfully every year and leave it regretfully, but full of hope for another year's respite and joy and lovely peace!

New family member Otis loved the crib. Smell of the air, red chairs on the porch -- citronella candles for evenings -- OMG, I look forward to the hammock here all year.

Great location and friendly farm!

  • 5 of 5

We found Fox Hollow Farm an excellent place to locate for easy access to any part of the Acadia area. Quiet and beautiful setting; near a goat farm where they make brick oven pizza on Saturdays. Wonderful seating, sleeping, and dining. Don' t miss this place!

Great place to get away and relax

  • 5 of 5

Had a great time with friends for two weeks.Accurate description of layout and amenities. Kitchen sink is old! but so what. new stove and fridge and large seating area. Property was clean and beds in excellent shape. Four adults had no problem staying in the place. Has two bathrooms both clean. some staining in shower but then again it is a farm house in Maine!. grounds and Barn are great to explore. Close to Bar Harbor, Bass Harbor, Winter Harbor, Mooshead Lake, Baxter State Park and Campobello Int. park. Great place to get away from the hustle and bustle. New flat screen tv that has netflix and pc/mac compatible for those rainy days at the farm

A Great Week in DownEast Maine and Acadia

  • 5 of 5

We've been heading up to Acadia for years and have stayed on-Island and off in a number of places. Lamoine and Raccoon Cove are among our favorite places. Quiet and off the beaten track, yet really just minutes to anywhere you want to go. We spent 5 days in the park hiking and biking our favorite places, one day at Raccoon Cove with beach chairs and kayaks provided by our hosts, and another day on the Schoodic Peninsula about 45 minutes northeast. We had never visited that part of Acadia before and really enjoyed the best lobster rolls in the center of Winter Haven.

This home is on a quiet rural paved road with a 15 minute walk to the cove. It's old, but has been lovingly maintained and updated. Everything you need is there...washer and dryer, dishwasher (a small one) everything for cooking, fast wifi and a big tv with Netflix although we barely used it. The couches are comfy as advertised, and the home is filled with great books and interesting artwork. The upstairs bedrooms have sloped ceilings since it's an old home but we didn't mind. The beds were all reported to be comfortable. Everything was very clean. We loved to open the dutch door to the kitchen porch to let in the clean Maine air and beautiful morning light each day. We also enjoyed the hummingbirds outside the kitchen window in the awesome flower garden. Don't miss Seal Cove Goat Farm up the road for their cheese and wood-fired pizzas!

Wonderful house, perfect location! Owners thought of everything!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four adults and two dogs had a wonderful stay at the farmhouse the week of July 4. The house was just perfect, nothing too fancy and very cozy without being cramped. The owners thought of everything from coolers to kayaks for guests. The swimming pond nearby is awesome and the beach is great for dogs to swim in and wonderful for walks. The location is close enough to MDI and Acadia without having to be constantly surrounded by crowds. We loved being able to hike Acadia and then come home to a nice quiet house away from it all. Ellsworth also has some great places to eat, esp. the Union River Lobster Pot and the Riverside Cafe, so you don't always have to go to MDI for dinner. We will most certainly be back!

Great Getaway For Nature Lovers and Enjoying Nearby Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Fox Hollow, would have stayed another week if we had the time. Well maintained charming farm house with all the comforts of home and lots of privacy on a big plot of land. The wifi and cable TV were a life saver as it kept the kids happy, plenty of books to read; great front porch to unwind and slow down from the hustle and bustle of life by reading a book or sipping a glass of wine. We had the best of both worlds as we had the opportunity to visit nearby Bar Harbor to enjoy shopping, whale watching, dining, etc...; and for the nature lover in us we soaked in the fantastic views at Acadia Park and visited Echo lake beach. Bicycles and kayaks were provided to enjoy the quiet country roads and nearby ponds, lakes, and bay areas. Our black labs even give Fox Hollow two thumbs up as they loved the property for the ample room to run about and play.

Beautiful property and perfect location, but house is rundown and not clean

  • 2 of 5

On the positive side, the property is in a perfect location for exploring Acadia and other local places. It is centrally located so that the Schoodic Peninsula, Blue Hill and Deer Isle are all easily accessible. The lawn is lovely, and the house is secluded and quiet. You cannot see any neighbors from the property and there are wonderful views of Acadia from the front. The owners supply lots of linens and towels.

On the negative side, however, while the house has the potential of being extremely charming, but it is very rundown and unfortunately, this doesn't show in the photos. The kitchen and bathrooms are not clean, somewhat having to do with the age and lack of renovation of the house, and partly because the rooms have not been scrubbed clean. The upstairs bathroom shower has a cloth shower curtain that is constantly wet and moldy. The floor tiles are dirty and so is the area around the sink. There are outdated prescription medications in the cabinet. The drawers are not washed clean. The kitchen sink is mostly black, because it is devoid of the enamel. The fridge, dishwasher and stove are very old and in particular, the stove is dirty. The pots and pans are also not clean. The appliances do work, but they make for a disappointing experience. The bedrooms were better, but because of the condition of the other rooms, we were nervous to use the blankets provided and washed sheets and pillow cases before using them. We had a really nice time despite the house's deficiencies, but would not rent again. Cleanliness is extremely important to us and we will be more careful in the future when renting on this site.

Owner's Response: Dear Lynda, We are really sorry about your experience at the farmhouse. I wish you had communicated with us during your four-week stay; we certainly would have addressed your concerns immediately! We've always taken the cleanliness of the house very seriously—it's been a point of pride, in fact—so it is distressing to learn that it wasn't adequately clean during your stay. As you probably know, we rely on our property manager to clean the house between guests during the summer months. But it is ultimately our responsibility to ensure the property is in great shape, and it looks like we failed you in this respect. In the 7 years we've been renting the farmhouse, yours is the first complaint we've had. Nevertheless, each of our guests deserve a comfortable, relaxing, and delightful vacation; we know how disappointing it can be when a long-anticipated trip fails to live up to expectations. So we will be taking serious steps to make sure this doesn't happen again. To address some of your specific points: yes, the kitchen sink is an original farmhouse sink with worn enamel, and if not clean it can look shabby. The refrigerator, though a bit dated, works well and has been reliable, but we've been considering updating both sink and refrigerator and will seriously look into it this fall. The stove is fairly new and the dishwasher is 2 years old. We're replacing the shower curtain upstairs. Thank you for your honest review and please accept our sincere regrets. All the best, Phillip and Lee Update January 2014: we have hired a new professional cleaning service and have made several updates to the farmhouse, including a new refrigerator; new bathroom fixtures; a new kitchen prep counter; and more. We're committed to providing a delightful experience for our guests, and will continue to improve where we can.
