It's a fascinating time to be in the Puna district. Kileaua volcano has been following continuously since 1989, mainly near, and bordering, the Hawaii Volcano National Park. As of June 27th, a new finger had developed. This is a ground flow only, and does not erupt into the air. It is heading towards the town of Pahoa. We are located about 3-4 miles laterally from the current flow. Our access to Hilo, and hwy 130 should not be affected. Our subdivision, Ainaloa, is most unlikely to have access cut off to it, as we are considered a very safe distance from the present day flow. The present lava flow is creating light to moderate smoke conditions, as the lava is creating very localized small brush fire burning. The conditions will vary based on materials burning and wind direction. Guests staying at our home have commented that they are still very satisfied with the air quality near our rental. Presently the town of Pahoa, and points beyond, are still accessible by regular roads / routes. In the advent that Hwy 130 is covered with Lava, near the town of Pahoa, they have created basic alternate roads, making the area beyond Pahoa still accessible, by a more circuitous route. We feel extremely FORTUNATE that our home is safe and still available to offer as a rental. ( As a side note; our home is a very solid structure, as we safely weathered a Category 1 Hurricane with no damage to our structure. ) The internet is a great resource for information about the June 27 Lava Flow, and we welcome any questions that you may have about our home and surrounding area. It is a dynamic time, with new earth being created daily! Come and enjoy our peaceful home, and explore and enjoy the East side of the Island. We look forward to your inquiries, and we appreciate the opportunity to be your host during your travels.
It's a great house. This is a clean and affordable place to stay.
We are conviently located in the tropical district of Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a logical gateway from which you can explore the strikingly beautiful, utterly raw, and uncrowded natural surroundings of East Hawaii. We are a 20 minute drive from the Hilo International Airport, a 5 minute drive from the town of Pahoa, a 20 minute drive to the sunny Kapoho beach parks, and an easy 40 minute drive from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Come relax, unwind, and fill your days with fascinating activities.
'Paradise Getaway' is located on a 1/4 acre lot, in Anialoa subdivision. Our house is surrounded by undeveloped lots on 3 sides, increasing your feeling of privacy. Our yard is tropical and ever developing. My husband David designed and built this house himself. Upon entering you will feel at home, with our comfortable and open floor plan. It has vaulted open beam ceilings, and plenty of large windows, allowing for tropical breezes to flow thru. Every room also has ceiling fans, it is easy to adjust the temperature based on air flow. We have a fully equipped kitchen with many cooking and dining conveniences, so relax and cook at home, or grill out on our charcoal grill. Our sleeping area has a new and comfortable queen sized bed. There is a large closet with room for luggage, and drawers to unpack for your stay. We also have a fold out futon where 2 additional people can sleep. Our bathroom is clean, spacious, and has a full sized bathtub / shower which is heated by solar hot water. Most houses in the Puna district rely on rain catchment systems for their water needs. We invested in a 10,000 gallon concrete rain catchment tank, complete with a state of the art UV filter. This ensures ample water supply, and a delicious and safe water source for all your drinking, cooking, and bathing needs. When comparing vacation rentals in this area, keep these quality eco-friendly features in mind. To help you get out and enjoy we provide the following: beach towels, sand mats, basic snorkel gear, boogies board, small ice chest / cooler, kids sand toys, and flash lights for your night time lava viewing. Don't forget, we have on-site laundry! A FRIENDLY NOTE: Our house is on a quiet street, and we request no loud parties. We have a strict NO SMOKING / NO PET POLICY for the comfort of all future guests. THANKS
People are always curious what the weather may be like; it is dynamic! A 'typical day' might be sunny and warm with some fast moving clouds and a short rain squall. It frequently rains at night and in the early morning, keeping it cool and comfortable for sleeping. The combination of sun, warmth, and rain, is what makes it look so tropical, and beautiful! It is helpful to pack a long sleeve shirt / pants, closed toe walking shoes for the lava, and a light rain coat. The following are all within an easy days drive: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hwy 130/Kalapana -previous lava flows, snorkeling at tide pools, soaking at warm ponds, surfing /swimming, farmers markets,Lava Trees, tropical gardens, zoo, downtown Pahoa and Hilo (restaurants/museums/shopping)

I am a carpenter from Alaska. I came to Hawaii, designed and built this house myself. We enjoy it for some part of the winter, and hope you will do the same.
Kirsten Amann purchased this house in 2007
We enjoy our water source being so eco-friendly (water from the rain / warmth from the sun). Our home is open and breezy with large windows to gaze at the moon, stars, and the sunrise. Our entire family enjoys our large deck daily. We live on a quiet, rural street - yet it is easy to get out and enjoy the tropical beauty that surrounds us. Our 3 year old daughter loves learning about the volcano, and she has even seen fresh lava flowing at night!
Kirsten was an amazing host even from afar. We never actually met but everything went as planned and very smoothly. Kirsten was also very helpful in giving us tips to make our trip better. The listing and info was all accurate. We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Paradise Getaway, would do it again, and recommend it to others! Thanks for helping make our recent trip to Hawaii so enjoyable. We really liked your place. Thanks for the breakfast on arrival and for the fresh pineapple (the person overseeing the property, I assume, left it for us downstairs one day). Your tip for the discount Hawaii car rental was great and we ended up using it. With the free additional driver, it was the cheapest option. We also made use of the Big Island Revealed guide book that you had available at the house several times during our stay and enjoyed all the little extra comfort at the house. We made use of the little cooler and beach towels on one outing. The washer and dryer were convenient too. It was nice to come back and relax and watch a little TV in the evenings then wake up and have coffee and breakfast before venturing out for the day. We loved Volcanoes National Park, went there two different days. We were celebrating our anniversary which turned into an engagement atop the volcano! We then had dinner at the Volcano House's Rim restaurant which was perfect. Besides that we liked "the strip" in Pahoa and tried out the Thai and Mexican restaurants there. I'd only been to Oahu before and liked the Big Island better. There was more beautiful natural surrounding to look at, it was less touristy, and I thought the food was better. I'm vegetarian and it was pretty easy to find good options for me. We went zip-lining one day in Kapa’au and used Big Island Eco Adventures II. We'd definitely recommend them. Not only did it allow us to see a different part of the island by driving to Kapa'au but our tour guides were super cool and gracious. It was my first time and they were great at helping our tiny group of four feel safe and comfortable. I hadn't been on others for comparison but my partner was talking about having to brake and land yourself on other zip lines. This one was more hands free because the tour guides helped with each "landing." I also went for my first ride in a helicopter. We did a volcano and waterfall helicopter tour using Blue Hawaiian helicopters. We also had a good experience with the people there. We stayed seven days and did much more then I mentioned h
This is a stand-alone house. The living area is upstairs. Below is the washer dryer. Upstairs is a full kitchen, queen bed, futon, full bathroom, and large deck. No AC but three fans and a plenty of windows keep the place cool. It's in a quiet neighborhood. Convenient location for us. Totally clean. Perfect for us: parents of a young child. You'd want a house if you're staying here.
This is a great little house on a quiet street. It is solidly built too. I road out a category 1 hurricane in it. The house didn't even shudder. It is nicely appointed and very comfortable. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because of 2 things. The first is not under the control of the owners. It is that the internet service is poor from the carrier. It cuts in and out and goes very slow at peak usage times. I was working while staying there and needed good internet. This interrupted my work. If you are on vacation and just need it for e-mail and such every once in awhile, you would probably not notice. The second is not a big deal really. The dryer needs some work or replacement. It works, but doesn't shut itself off.
That said, the owners were responsive to my needs and very helpful. The place was as least as nice as the pictures. Oh, and the water tastes great.
I would suggest going to the Maku'u Farmers Market on Sunday. Go hungry and eat from the vendors. Do all your produce shopping there to save money and get high quality goods. Eat at Kaleo's and LaQuenn's (sp) in Pahoa. The public pool in Pahoa is the nicest I have ever seen. It is free, clean, well staffed and not very crowded. Due to the hurricane, many of the things I wanted to see were not accessible to me. I will come back to see them.
This place is as cute as it could be! The yard and outside area was well groomed and gorgeous. Efficient small home that feels big because it has an open floor plan. Tree frogs and tropical birds that sing. I will stay again.
We've stayed in many VRBO and this is by far the best one we've had for comfort and cleanliness. We'll stay again when return the big I
This was a great, simple, budget friendly option. We stayed here 3 nights during our 10 nights on the island. The house had basic amenities anyone would need. Since there's enough sleeping for 4, it would've been nice to have seating for 4 on the lanai. We would've loved to eat a meal out there. We didn't mind the singing from the frogs or birds. It was rather enjoyable. The area south of the home was gorgeous all along the coast..so happy we explored there. Our only complaint would be the plastic covering on the mattress& pillows. It was noisy & seemed to make us sweaty.
The owners were easy to contact; and the rental was clean and affordable as stated. However it was a little too dark and secluded for us. We arrived after dark and no street lights, kind of spooky. Then the roosters started. All night we heard roosters and birds. (I never heard of roosters crowing at night)...it was weird. We had to keep windows open and fans on to move air and stay cool; really had trouble sleeping with all that noise. Rental was well stocked with anything you might need; however TV was small. Convenient location to explore the volcano and Hilo beaches.
