I can be a bit skeptical when I see nothing but five stars in a review because it's hard to believe anything is perfect. Vacation getaways are especially dicey because there are so many high expectations, it's easy to be disappointed. In the case of Villa Lomas, however, it's safe to believe all the good press.
We booked the villa about two months before our stay and almost canceled because my husband suffered a shoulder injury. Though it meant we couldn't do as much as we originally hoped to do, we decided to stick with our plans, and we’re glad we did -- this was an incredibly fun and relaxing vacation, a largely thanks to Alvaro and Bruce and their wonderful villa.
The villa is obviously a labor of love, reflected indoors and outdoors. The gardens are magnificent and we spent over an hour with Alvaro learning about the countless varieties of plants and trees used to create a serene and gorgeous backdrop to the villa. Pictures don't do it justice. The house is also beautiful -- and spanking clean -- and the wide-open decks were perfect for winding down after a day at the beach (some conversation, wine, napping) or eating breakfast. The bed was comfortable, and the apartment had everything we needed if we wanted to cook (we kept it to a couple of breakfasts and morning tea), as well as bath and beach supplies. Really, there's nothing Alvaro and Bruce haven't thought of; it's pretty much just bring your clothes and you're set.
Alvaro and Bruce were gracious and thoughtful hosts, making suggestions we felt made the trip perfect. Considering my husband's injury, Alvaro suggested a beach not in our travel guide that was close by yet virtually private with calm waves that weren’t difficult to swim in. Their restaurant suggestions were a success and we also enjoyed sharing a glass of wine one evening and some morning coffee with them, learning more about them and appreciating the opportunity to see more of Bruce's art beyond what’s in the rental.
The location is a double-edged sword because it's on top of a hill, accessed by a winding, narrow road. That means it offers wonderful views (including an incredible rainbow one morning!) and the noise of the frogs at night (soothing to us). However, it's an intimidating drive at first. If you're planning to rent an SUV, reconsider because you likely won't need it and all the roads in Rincon are narrow. Pay attention and use your low gear to go up and down and you’ll be fine.
No question about it, we'll be back.
My wife and I stayed in Alvaro and Bruce's magnificent home for a little getaway following our wedding. Villa Lomas exceeded our expectations! The home is on the top of a hill, with stunning views of the ocean and lush gardens with hundreds of plants and trees that Alvaro and Bruce planted themselves and tend to. Alvaro even went out of his way to give us an extensive tour of the garden. The pool, which was entirely ours and private, was a wonderful treat. The pool was so clean (and had a waterfall) and was extremely refreshing.
The apartment itself opens out to a large beautiful terrace (also very private), and we spent most of our time out there. The terrace also has a barbeque, and we grilled one night while overlooking the amazing Rincon sunset. We brought our binoculars and were able to spot countless birds in the trees surrounding the villa, and at night, the coqui frogs reminded us that we were truly in nature.
The apartment itself was very clean had everything we needed and was decorated with Bruce's beautiful paintings. The bed also was very comfortable - we slept like babies. We cannot say enough about our stay, and as frequent world travelers, we place our stay at Villa Lomas among our favorite. Alvaro and Bruce were great hosts - accessible when needed but also respected our privacy.
The Villa also is a quick 10 minute drive from most things in Rincon, and only right down the hill from Steps Beach and some great restaurants. We will surely be back. Thank you Alvaro and Bruce for sharing your beautiful home with us!
My wife and I had booked this villa last year and due to airline difficulties (no plane) we had to cancel our trip. When my wife called in tears to let Alvero and Bruce know they graciously let us book this year and the wait was well worth it! The villa is at the top of the hill with 360 views of the ocean and hills around us. It is extremely private and the owners keep it that way. As mentioned in previous reviews, Alvero meets you at the front gate leading you down a gravel driveway to another locked sliding gate to the parking area. Once inside you can see that the place is well taken care of and lovingly furnished with nothing but top of the line furnishings. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was outfitted with everything you would need. We have stayed in many places in Rincon and have found the furniture to sometimes be what the owners have brought from their main home or bought from Walmart. You will not find that here. The main veranda is beautiful, over 50 ft. long with fantastic wicker furniture. The pillows on the sofas and chairs are soft white and very firm allowing lots of afternoon naps in the soft breeze. There is another porch/veranda overlooking the pool with a dining table and chairs that is wonderful to sit at dusk with wine and cheese. The front veranda is good for this also and to catch incredible sunsets. We found ourselves staying there for sunsets instead of the usual sunset bars with rum punch specials. Why spend money and be with dozens of people when you have your own special place? The pool is very private and is all yours for the duration of your stay and has comfortable pool furniture to hang out in. Do not miss the garden tour. Alvero and Bruce have planted over two dozen types of palm trees along with other flowering plants that Alvero is very knowledgable about and happy to share all that they have put into the place. Bruce's art, which is exhibited all around the villa, is wonderful. He exhibits in many galleries and it's great to see his work in his studio along with the many pieces of African Art he has collected for many years. Both are great hosts, very discreet but there if you need something. It was such a pleasure meeting both of them and sharing their space. We would highly recommend staying here. You are away from the bustle of the beach crowd but only 5 minutes from a great beach and the town of Rincon. We have already booked for next year and can't to get back!
Villa Lomas is beyond amazing with beautiful views of the ocean and the rolling hills of Rincon. My husband and I were greeted at the main gate by the owner Alvaro and led to our own gated private parking. Alvaro is a most charming host, willing to answer any question and accommodate every need. We stayed in the one bedroom apartment and were extremely comfortable. Our bedroom looked like we were the first ever to stay in it and the bed was ultra comfortable. You are provided with the highest quality linens, and a beautiful open shower giving you that island flavor. The kitchen is fully equipped with every amenity you would need including a blender which came in very handy for fresh tropical cocktails. The décor in this home is so stunning and no detail has been overlooked. Most of the artwork is hand painted by Alvaro’s partner Bruce and he really is quite talented. We were treated to a tour of the grounds where for the last 10 years, the owner’s have cultivated into a tropical paradise of palms and exotic plants from all over the world. We spent many a day snorkeling, swimming and dining at any one of the amazing local restaurants. Upon returning each day we would relax by the exquisite in ground pool surrounded by the most beautiful horticulture you could imagine. The sunsets from the large fully furnished balcony are so spectacular they take your breath away and the sounds of the coqui frogs are a slice of heavenly nature. My husband and I were taking a well deserved vacation and this respite couldn't have fit the bill more. We will most definitely be back. Thank you Alvaro and Bruce for sharing your spectacular home! - Michael & Adam
Cannot say enough about our stay at Villa Lomas and Bruce and Alvaro's hopsitality. The gardens are beautiful and Alvaro's garden tour was a highlight. We also loved Bruce's paintings throughout the property. This was our 12th trip to Rincon and our first stay at Villa Lomas and we will be back! The outdoor living space is amazing and everything meticulously neat and clean. Thanks, Bruce and Alvaro, and hope to see you soon.

I can't even begin to say how beautiful and restful the villa was nor how wonderful our hosts were. We had big plans for everything we wanted to see and do in the area, but the villa, the pool, and gardens were so lovely we hardly ever left! It was like heaven! So relaxing! It was just what we needed after our busy jobs.
The villa is decorated very tastefully and we enjoyed Bruce's paintings and the African art in the villa. Furnishings in the villa, on the verandas, and around the pool is top quality. We had access to the owners WIFI and the TVs looked new, but we never used them. Why bother when you have such a beautiful view of the Caribbean and Desecheo Island!
Alvaro communicated with me via email and answered all my questions before we left and was so concerned about our safe arrival (we had missed the first leg of our flight) that he called both our cell phone and our home to make sure we were alright! When we arrived in the dark that first night after 10 PM, he patiently stayed on the phone to talk us through the winding roads to the house and Bruce stood at the gate with a flashlight to wave us in! It made us feel like family!
That night during our late arrival we asked about breakfast and our hosts suggested a lovely place for breakfast just down the road: The English Rose. They even called ahead the next morning and let them know we'd be there and then advised us when we got up that they were expecting us and how late they were open! The garden tour is not to be missed if you love plants and flowers. Your toughest choice while there is which veranda you will sit on to enjoy the view and when to swim in the impeccably clean pool.
When the second house we had rented was a complete disappointment we called and asked if we could come back. Lucky for us they were able to accommodate us for a few extra days. Alvaro's warm response was "Yes, come on home". Once again, Bruce and Alvaro waited up for us to drive across PR and welcomed us back "home" late at night. We really DID feel like family.
If you are lucky enough to have a chance to stay at this beautiful, well maintained villa, I'm sure you'll never forget it. It was a wonderful vacation for my husband, adult son, and me.
