Volunteering as a physician and a teacher's aid brought us to the Island of St. Lucia 10 years ago. We fell in love with the Island and its people and decided to purchase our home. We still volunteer one month a year in the local hospital, surrounding clinics and the Soufriere Infant School. We have become very involved and attached to the local community.
Henriette McMichen purchased this villa in 2005
The view, the tropical gardens and the house with its location were exactly what we were looking for.
We love waking up every morning and facing the magnificent view of the Petit Piton and Caribbean Sea. We enjoy the terrace, barbe-queing and eating local fruits on the property when in season. We also enjoy walking and swimming.
We loved our stay at Hermitage Cottage – it was everything you described, and more. St Lucia is just wonderful
My husband and I stay at Hermitage Cottage for a week at the start of February. Having never booked a VRBO, initially I was a little apprehensive but after speaking directly with the owners, and receiving their prompt helpful emails that didn't last long. We rented a car and drove from the airport. The directions we got were clear and we arrived with no problems. The car the owners recommended for us was perfect for us. The main highway is fine to drive, the side roads not so much, but we just took our time and had no problems. The cottage itself was perfect for us, secluded, comfortable and I can't even begin to describe the beautiful views. The pictures do not do it justice. The property is gorgeous and the cottage itself is well kept and had everything we needed. My husband loved the BBQ and the kitchen is well equipped with anything else you may need. Magdalene, the housekeeper, was a lovely woman who is very helpful with anything you may need or helpful advice. We took the recommendations we read about and had her cook for us one night, and the meal was fabulous. Ferrad kept the pool well maintained and was very discreet when we came down to go for a swim. He spend most of the day in the pool house, but that never bothered us at all, we enjoyed talking to him. We really enjoyed the helpful guest book the owners left, as well as the book they left with everything we needed to know. We got many of our ideas for outings from others peoples experiences. My only advice would be to bring ear plugs to sleep at night if you are a light sleeper, after the sun goes down the insects are very loud! I would recommend this place to anyone, we feel very lucky that we found it. Thank you very much Henriette and Ian for opening your home to us.
My Girlfriend and I stayed in the cottage for a week in November and had a fantastic time!
The cottage resides in a very interesting geological location (collapsed volcano crater) hence, the pitons, amazing topography and views. Don't worry, the volcano has been dormant for some 40,000 years. The cottage is at a high elevation from the sea, and is on the edge of a small interior rainforest (bug spray is good).
We spent a couple days just hanging around the cottage, catching some sun, relaxing and found that it had everything we needed. The remaining days were spent enjoying the many activities and sites (waterfalls, mud baths, views, beaches, snorkeling, zipline, hiking, water taxi's, markets). The location of the cottage is within close proximity to all these things.
If you enjoy being independent, and having privacy away from other tourists, this spot is for you, it was perfect for us. I would recommend this location to others, but I can't say it's for everyone.
There is a maid (Magdelane) and a gardener (Ferrard) who are present, however, on the first day we met the maid and she asked us what we would like in terms of service. We told her that we were fairly independent people and she should come by every other day just to do the basics... On the first day she came into town with us, showed us around Soufriere and where the grocery store, butcher, bakery and bank were. Looking at some of the other reviews I think she will do more for you if that's what you want.
We hardly ever saw Ferrard... From our understanding, he does maintain this property and has a garden down the road, and maintains the roadway leading up to the cottage, he left us fresh bread one day. We thought he was pleasant.
In hindsight, I would have asked more questions about the maid before heading out to the property to clarify her role upfront, but we got exactly what we wanted, so it didn't matter.
I found the island to be safe and the people warm and friendly. St.Lucia has many exciting things to do as well as having the chill factor (island time). We loved it here on the island, and staying at the cottage offered a unique and special experience that not many other travellers get to have when travelling to St. Lucia..
We loved it here and would go back again.
Thanks for letting us use the cottage for the week. It was better then we expected!
My wife and I spent one week at Hermitage Cottage as a get-away vacation and were not disappointed in the least! We are an older couple that enjoy both the adventure of the outdoors and peace and tranquilty of nature. Hermitage Cottage is located in a beautiful setting with magnificent views as well as being located on the less-touristy side of the island. The property is well decorated, comfortable and stocked with the necessary ammenities for short or long-term visits including internet and phone service, cable television, towels, linen and even snorkeling equipment! Magdelene, Ferrard and Ray (houskeeping, grounds and gardner) are extremely pleasant, helpful and respectful of visitor privacy. They are a wealth of information about the island and locals and went out of their way to assist us during our stay. Hermitage Cottage is a "little piece of heaven" and is close to Soufriere for grocery shopping, Anse Chastenet and Anse de Pitons for snorkeling and located above the cocoa plantation at Hotel Chocolat as well as nature trails of Tet Paul and Gros and Petit Pitons. Restaurants at Ladera and Sugar Beach are down the road along with the Harmony Restaurant at Malgritoute beach. We will defintely return to Hermitage Cottage in the future and highly recommend this property to others wishing to enjoy St. Lucia and not be confined to the typical tourist hotel experience!
We stayed at Hermitage Cottage for a week during our honeymoon and loved it. The house has this cool open layout. Basically you spend all your time outside on the covered terrace enjoying the views of the pitons. It came especially in handy when it rained (only 1 day) because we got to admire tons of waterfalls cascading down the piton. The hammock was so comfortable as was the bedroom and terrace furniture. The pool was great and view from there was so cool. We loved lounging around by the pool playing scrabble and swimming. Views are incredible! There is a large garden space with lots of fruit trees and plants, which was fun to explore. The drive to the villa at night has this air of mystery and adventure, which we loved. The dirt road is surrounded by thickly vegetated trees and plants leading to a gated stone entrance. The house was about a 20 minute drive to Sugar Beach and a quick drive to Hotel Chocolat or Ladera for dinner. Our one and only regret is that we didn't have full privacy. The house caretaker/gardener lives on the property in the pool house. This wouldn't bother me if we were doing a family trip with kids, but for a romantic getaway it was a tad unfortunate. In any case, we loved the property and would absolutely recommend it! Owners are super nice and very easy to reach. Thank you!
Unbeatable view. Clean comfortable house. Nice pool. No mosquitoes. Friendly caretakers. Easy to manage transaction with owner. Close to good beaches and dive spots. It all equals a perfect holiday on a beautiful island. A car is needed and the owners recommended rental agent delivered smoothly.
We honeymooned here on May 20, 2013, and were very happy with the property. The view is absolutely incredible, and the cottage itself is a real gem. We wanted to have more privacy than an all inclusive resort, and this is definitely the way to go. You'll need a rental car to get around, but having your own getaway is well worth it. The covered patio is huge! And you really cannot beat the view. The rainy season started a few weeks early this year so we got some rain.
The owners are good people. I can say that from my experience as well as from what I heard from the housekeepers.
Sugar Beach is nice and close, and is free. Beautifully located between the two Petons. We recommend Orlando's for dinner in the town of Soufriere. If you are going to buy fish in town, buy it early in the morning. Everyone in town is very friendly, although you might get asked for money. We never felt unsafe, however.
We would definitely stay here again. Thanks to the owners for everything!
