My wife Lori and I have been visiting the island every winter since 1980. When we decided it was where we wanted to be, we started constructing Casa Azul a little at a time until it was finally finished in 2008. We are striving to keep it reasonable so anyone can afford to vacation on this lovely island as we have for so many years.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 1996

We purchased the property and built the vacation rental in this location because of the sea view, while still being somewhat shielded from the effects of storms and the erosion caused by waterfront property.

Only a short distance from the main village, a quiet neighborhood with a local flare

The rooms are a perfect size, we had a dine in kitchen, bedroom and living room combined and a good size bathroom. A large closet was great for storage. We loved an afternoon dip in the cool dipping pool. The patio and pool area was very well kept and comfortable. The location is mid-island so we felt like we were living among locals. We loved being able to walk around even at night an feel safe and welcomed. Casa azul is located within walking distance of the Chedrau and some really great authentic restaurants. Monilito was our favorite. Other great ones are Mango's , Monchi's, Kash Keken Chuc, and a must try is Tablita at the north end. Jim and Lori are super nice and hospitable. Jim met us at the ferry and even gave us a ride the day we were departing. Free wi-fi, water, and very cool air conditioning are a great bonus.
We would definitely return!

We felt like we had a home away from home. Although it was technically a room, it felt like we had a kitchen, dining room, and bedroom which all added to the homey feeling. Also, the location was mid-island so we felt like (and were) living among locals. Since we like to walk a lot, we enjoyed that we could walk to most points on the island in about 45 minutes. When we didn't feel like walking, taxis were cheap (3-4 USD). As for the owners, we only met Jim but he seemed extremely nice and laid back, but very responsible and attentive to problems. We had one issue and it was taken care of immediately. Also, nice touches were free wi-fi, water, air conditioning - which is rare for this price. Especially nice was that he picked us up from the ferry and drove us back in his golf cart - that was an awesome way to start our vacation.

As a side note, other advantages are that Chedraui (the main super market on the island) is a short walk away. Also short distance is Mango's (the best breakfast place on the island and probably the best we've had), Monchi's, Green Verde, Kash Keken Chuc, Minoltas. Also try the Cochinita Pibil (famous specialty) at Manolitos on Sundays but you need to get there before 9am because it sells out fast. Also, not too far away (15 minutes) are many good bars (also good food as well) such as Bahia Tortuga, Varadero, Soggy Peso, Iguanas, Oscar's.

I ended up at Jim & Lori's Casa Azul during a round-about route to Chiapas, and stayed there for one night on each end of my trip (two nights total). Casa Azul was exactly what I was looking for during my too-brief stay on Isla and after leaving, I immediately made reservations with Jim to return during Spring 2014.

Jim was super helpful and fetched me from the ferry on each arrival, even waiting and returning for me several times during a very long flight delay and missed ferry departures! I'm originally from the Midwest, so Jim and Lori's fun and easy going nature was so familiar and welcome.

Casa Azul is located in a great, safe little neighborhood, outside of but easily accessible to the main tourist drag. The neighborhood is a great slice-of-life Mexico, inhabited by local families and expats like Jim & Lori. It is walking distance to Caribbean oceanfront, a beautiful hilltop church, several great taquerias, a baseball diamond, and the famous Mango Cafe. I really enjoyed staying in a Mexican neighborhood instead a more tourist-zone type of locale; this was my third trip to Mexico and Caza Azul's location is perfect for folks wanting to experience daily life in a small town. I walked around the area both day and night, felt safe, and was helped by friendly locals who put up with my mediocre Spanish when I asked for directions.

The studio apartments at Casa Azul are comfortable, clean, and I especially liked the large, tiled shower. Wifi was strong, the roof patio is fantastic, and I had a great time meeting other guests. It immediately felt like a home away from home and I can't wait to go back!

We just spent 3 weeks on Isla Mujeres, and want to express our appreciation for the hospitality provided by our fine hosts, Jim and Lori at Casa Azul. Don’t want to repeat all the other glowing praises here, but do want to give them the 5 star review they deserve, so here goes!

Our first stay was for a month last summer, 2012. Tho’ drawn by the low price, we found our rooms comfortable, clean, with a/c & ceiling fans, good wi-fi & cable TV. The kitchen’s set-up let us keep cold drinks in the fridge and food to cook. Shady, plant-lined walkways and lack of direct sunlight in our rooms helped keep it cool, and there’s plenty of sun upstairs, around the pool & patio. After a few outings, we also came to appreciate their mid-island location, with corner stores down the block, easy access to taxis, & short walks to Monchi’s, Mango’s, Manolito’s Loncheria, Villa La Bella, and the nearby beach.

The owners were away that time, but we’d emailed with Jim about the rental, and he replied quickly, clearly, and made us feel welcome. Their caretaker Chely came by almost daily to see if we needed anything, and was both helpful and respectful of our space. We felt quite at home there, and left hoping to return soon.

This year, we spent our first week at the Avalon Resort (a timeshare deal from a friend). We emailed Jim to see if we could stay at Casa Azul for two weeks after that, and were glad to hear they had room and would be there to welcome us.

A few days at the timeshare really emphasized Casa Azul’s strongest assets, for us – its accessibility, cook-ability & fridge capacity, *free* wi-fi, and down-to-earth proprietors. Jim kindly offered to come get us in his golf cart when we checked out, brought us back to Casa Azul, and we had a beer with him in their courtyard. Lori & feisty little Cujo joined us, and we went to a favorite cantina of theirs for cervezas & ceviche. It was a fun day spent with good-hearted, entertaining folks.

We enjoyed a few more outings at their invitation, and we learned some new places to eat & drink, with great company. And when we wanted to be home-bodies, that was fine, too; they’d just say to come ask if we needed anything. Easy-going, copacetic hospitality.

So, while we knew we’d be content with our rooms, meeting Lori & Jim was a highlight of this visit. May this favorable review inspire many travelers-to-be to fill the rooms of Casa Azul for years to come! (And may *we* continue to be two of them!)

Sadly we just arrived home from a lovely week on our favorite island! Our stay at Casa Izul was fabulous! Our apartment was so comfortable and quiet...just what we needed after a busy day having fun on the island! Lori & Jim were wonderful hosts....helpful and informative! We rented a golf cart for the week and we enjoyed the pool and upper deck in the evenings when we were "home"!
For the "budget conscious" traveler that just wants the basics in accomodations we can highly recommend Case Azul! The gorgeous Caribbean is free no matter how much you spend or where you lay your head to sleep!!
