Four generations of the island-based Black family have owned and loved this special oasis by the sea, presided over by the oldest and largest banyan tree in Puako. A well-received addition to the beloved Beach Banyan compound, the Treehouse is a cheery upstairs studio cottage seemingly slung between the graceful banyan branches. Looking out to a mesmerizing scene of ancient lava rocks and ocean waves, the Treehouse provides a unique blend of timeless island lifestyle and modern-day creature comforts. It’s a perfect hideaway for couples looking for a dreamy oceanside retreat. Access to the ocean is next door at the public path rather than through the yard of the larger Beach Banyan on property, and easy half-minute walk.

We had a wonderful time during our week at the Tree House. Its perfectly sized for two people and one live-in gecko. I love the area and its so close to several beautiful beaches and it's a quite laid back neighborhood. Even though this was not the main house on the property we still had a view of the ocean and a big shady banyon tree and lovely breezes through the house. There was a couple renting the big house so we were not able to use the big yard, but the path to the beach was so close. We looked around the island for turtles but found the most encounters right on the beach outside our tree house. Amazing! We evens saw whales breaching from our beach, they were out a ways but still spectacular! I would highly recommend this to other renters. The birds sing early in the morning, so if you are not early risers suggest ear plugs unless you want to be up that early. Wish there was a little bit of the main yard allocated to the tree house, its the one thing that would have made this even more perfect! If we ever visit this island again, we will try to stay in the same place!! The folks handling the rental were excellent to work with too which made it smooth and easy. Highly recommend!
I have stayed in the Puako area before, but always in larger places. As it was just going to be my boyfriend and myself, I was delighted to find a smaller, affordable place to stay. It was comfortable, well-appointed, and close to the water with easy beach access by the path adjacent to the house. We were very fortunate since the people in the other house on the property left the next day, so we had the front yard to ourselves, which made it very special. I will admit that without access to the front yard, it wouldn't have been quite as exceptional. But, that detail notwithstanding, it is a great place if there are only 2 of you. 2 Papayas couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. We had a wonderful stay in the "treehouse", and are looking forward to renting either the Treehouse or the larger house sometime in the future.
About this time of year sun starved Seattleites need a vacation - and I had been looking forward to this trip for months. I've been to all the Hawaiian islands - this being the fourth time to the Big Island - and I have to say this was the best accommodations yet!
What makes this place special? Location...Puako is laid back and quiet, just a small neighborhood that happens to have a great ocean view. If you need to go out to a restaurant every night then Kona might be better for you...but if you enjoy making your own meals, sitting on your own lanai and watching the sun set over the ocean, then this is the place. There is no road between you and the ocean, just a nice landscaped yard.
The Treehouse is also a great location for all sorts of outdoor activities. Fantastic snorkeling literally steps a way - great beaches such as Haupuna Beach or Beach 69 less than a 15 minute drive.
The Treehouse itself is spacious, light and airy - perfect for 2 people. Great natural ocean ventilation meant it was never too hot for sleeping once the sun went down. The kitchen is well stocked, plus there are beach accessories such as towels, chairs and a cooler for you to use when you venture out.
I can't wait for the next trip!
The Treehouse Studio was amazing!. Mary's customer service was above and beyond.
We loved the location of the apartment at the end of a quiet to road. We enjoyed the Whale watching, the Turtles in the Tidal pools, and the beautiful sunsets. The furnishings were very comfortable and we had everything we needed. Naran at the General Store was very welcoming. He was a great source of information on the local scene. We loved the apartment and area so much we have already booked it again for a 2015 vacation.
Puako is a great place to stay if you prefer to be in "Old Hawaii" rather than a resort. We really enjoyed being in a quiet neighborhood with easy access to the water. However the Treehouse has a number of drawbacks so that we would not stay there again. Positives are that the house is nicely equipped, good bed, good kitchen. The major negative for us is that there is no privacy. The Treehouse windows are on the same level with 2nd floor windows of the main house on the property and the 2 houses are much closer together than I anticipated. We had to keep the blinds closed most of the time because otherwise you are on display to anyone in the main house. When you stand at the bathroom mirror, you can see the main house and I assume that anyone in the main house can see you. There was a sliding door between the kitchen and the bathroom that would have helped with privacy but unfortunately the door didn't close. The other major negative is that it's really not ocean view because of the dense vegetation in front of the Treehouse blocking the view. It's true that the ocean is directly in front of the Treehouse but there are too many trees in the way to claim ocean view. Maybe some pruning could be done and then this would really be an ocean view property. I think the Treehouse is best used by people who are in a group that is also renting the main house. I can see that it would be a lot of fun to rent both houses and have the whole property available.
The Treehouse provides a peaceful and relaxing spot for vacationing in Puako. We awakened to birdsong and watched sunsets from the shoreline, cocktail in hand. Dolce far niente, indeed!
