We sailed to Hawaii from the South Pacific in 1991 and the Island welcomed us so much that we are still here today! We love to travel and explore new places preferably from a nice , home-like base. We used our travel experiences to create a welcoming home away from home for you.
We are cabinet makers by trade and have included our expertise as well as our love for detail and beauty into our home.
We love local food and gourmet cooking so our kitchen is very well equipped .
We support sustainability- we have solar power ( with electric back up), we compost and recycle, we have herbs, nuts and fruit in out garden that we are happy to share with you.
We both meditate and Kerstin practices yoga. We are very happy to share our Yoga and Meditation Shala with our guests.
Kerstin Preyasi Exter purchased this house in 1998
We love this community because it is laid back, rural and real. People know each other here ! This is a beautiful, lush and tropical region of the Big Island and we take pleasure in living Hawi.
The Zen-style home is private and romantic. We have 2 ponds and a waterfall around the house and one of the biggest pleasures is to sit in the soaking tub in the morning and watch the lotus open in the pond. Having evening cocktails on the lanai and a nice al fresco dinner is not too bad either!
If you like beautiful woodwork and attention to detail you will love it here. We have put our expertise and our hearts into creating this home and garden.
You know how sometimes the pictures are far better than the actual place...well not so in this case. The cottage is amazing, very large, clean and beautifully decorated. We enjoyed cooking in the large kitchen and lounging on the lani. I highly recommend staying at either one of the Exter rentals. Their attention to detail is outstanding as is their organization and impecable communication with coordinating your stay.
We can't wait to go back next year!" - Nipomo CA
We have stayed in many properties through-out the islands and the Zen House rates with the best of them. The house and settings are perfect match for the beautiful North Kohala area. If you love large resorts this place is probably not for you.The towns of Hawi and Kappau have enough amenities yet still retain that quiet smaller town feel. There are many places to walk or bike where you are not on pavement and enjoy the scenery. A half hours drive gets you to all the best golf, beaches ,shopping and restaurants that you need. As for the house, it is just as the pictures show, exceptional. We did not have any issues but know that Kirsten or Swarupo are always available should something arise. Thank you Kirsten and Atulyo , we hope to return someday!
This is a special, quiet property. The hand made wood details in the house are beautifully unique. The landscaping and waterfall make this home seem magical. We enjoyed the outdoor showers and privacy everyday. The pictures describe the home correctly.
The little towns of Hawi and Kapaa are just down the road a mile with interesting restaurants and shops. Try The Bamboozer for lunch at The Bamboo. Owner and property manager were easy to work with.
This home is amazing. Beautiful to behold and stay in, almost difficult to leave to explore the island! Very close to Hawi town and it's sweet shops and restaurants, but felt secluded and private. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and recommend it to anyone and everyone!
The house was perfect. Everything you could possibly need for a picnic on the beach was available for you to us.
Mornings wake call from birds singing and the breeze blowing through the curtains. Heaven on earth. The property was crafted and decorated with love. Enjoying a few more days and then headed back to our home in the snow.
What a place! The house and garden are clearly a labor of love. The house is modern and beautiful, the kitchen to-die-for, and the outdoor facilities (e.g., the shower, the cascading pool, and foliage) perfect for a Hawaiin vacation. We were stunned that you could get this much for the price charged, especially since we've stayed in not-to-good places on the Big Island. The manger/neighbor, Swarupo, was so nice and helpful. But we want to echo Joanne's excellent suggestion: this place desperately needs two good fans, one for each bedroom. One night it was so warm upstairs it was hard to sleep. Given the hundreds of thousands of dollars the owners must have spent on the house and the incredible care they put into everything, we simply suggest they spend another $80-$100 for two really good fans.
Kerstin, the owner, was very helpful and communicative prior to booking as well as during our stay, even while being on a vacation of her own! Swarupo, the Property Manager, was a doll - conscientious about being available but not intrusive, which we very much appreciated.
The home is absolutely gorgeous and very private despite the proximity of the neighbors and the other VRBO unit; it was very tranquil. The photos seemed too good to be true but they were and then some. We absolutely LOVED the outdoor showers!
The kitchen was fantastic - we cooked and grilled the entire time, so the various kitchen utensils and cooking equipment provided was a huge plus. The house was well-stocked with any and all amenities you could ask for.
We loved all the attention to detail in creating this home - it was like a piece of art!
Going to sleep to the sounds of frogs was sublime.
A few constructive comments that we made to Swarupo prior to departing were: a "sealed" trash can to minimize bugs - we emptied our trash every other day to avoid this; seal the temporary compost bin (which we referred to as the "transfer" station) in the kitchen, due to the accumulation of bugs just after 1 day; check the placement of the satellite dish since we were unable to watch television due to the repeated and consistent signal losses, which at first, we attributed to the winds but this happened night or day (wind or no wind) - if you are a TV fanatic, you might have been peeved but this just allowed us to read more; lastly, there were several days where there was no breeze at all and it was probably 80-90 degrees in the house with no relief...there is a ceiling fan in the house but it was more decorative rather than functional (no matter if you increased the speed) - it would be helpful to combat this with having one electric fan upstairs for the kitchen/living room area and one in the master bedroom. When the cross breezes kicked in, it was just amazing and felt soo fresh.
Our friends were so in awe of the place when they came to visit. They are now thinking of contacting Kerstin for next year!
We look forward to returning again - it really felt like "our" home! Thanks Kerstin & Swarupo!
