The property upon which this house is located was originally owned by the Cottle family and was settled in Tisbury in 1670 after their home outside Boston was burned down by local Native-Americans. You may find the family lumber yard, owned by ancestors of Edward Cottle, just a stone's throw down Lambert's Cove Road from our entrance.
In the 1930s, a later Cottle sold a portion of the land to two island vacationers who had known each other as children in Panama where their fathers had been lead army engineers on the building of the Canal. One of the children grew up to be a well-respected doctor and the other went on to become an army intelligence officer during the second world war. The doctor's property included the original Cottle homestead which still stands today -- over 340 years later. The army general built a home on the bluff directly overlooking Vineyard Sound.
Two decades later, the general gave each of his three children a parcel of land and created a 'family' compound. The 56 Boghouse Road rental home was built in 1954 by the general's second son, also a career army officer and Episcopal priest in retirement. For the next 54 years, the house was his family summer home. Upon his death in 2007, his children decided the time had come to completely renovate. The renovation work was completed in 2009 and includes the many upgrades and features described above. Many of the watercolors in the house were painted by The house is located on three very private wooded acres and is adjacent to the Sheriff's meadow land conservancy.
Martha's Vineyard is one of the most special islands in the world. Natural beauty, warm hospitality, early American charm, and friendly surroundings make it a wonderful vacation destination.
The privacy of the home and beachfront give you the option of snuggling up to a good book in peace and quiet, or taking long walks on the beach at any time of day or night. The proximity of nearby towns allow you the opportunity to explore, sightsee, shop and carouse with easy distances.
