When we first moved to Halifax, we were in awe of it's natural beauty and still are. We bought and rennovated a home in Ferguson's Cove and fell in love with the view, the area and the people there. Just down the road from our old house was a piece of land, located directly across the water from the lighthouse. We thought would be the ideal place to build a home. A few years later, we found ourselves sitting on our deck, feeding our dear friend Sigmund the seagull, watching whales feed and the boats go by. We hope that you enjoy the house, the view and above all the feeling.
The Owner purchased this house in 1995
Location, Location, Location! Not only is the view breathtaking but the house is only a 20 minute drive from downtown Halifax, and sits next to a national historic site and park. The closest grocery and liquor store is 5 minutes away as are fast food restaurants and other shopping.
Meet Sigmund The Seagull
Sigmund has lived with us in Ferguson’s Cove for over 20 years. He was only 2 years old when we finished construction of the house. His gray feathers were coming in showing he had just matured from an adolescent bird. He came to visit us from our old home down the street, and he never left.
Sigmund’s favorite spot to sit is on the left facing deck post, where he watches the water and eats tid bits that we feed him. While they may be left overs and dog chow to us, it is food for for a king to him! His favorite meal is left over fish and chips. Many people told us that if you feed one seagull, you will have a hundred show up to dine. This is not the case as Sigmund only allows his mate, Suzie and his family to share a meal with him on the deck!
He's married 14 years now and he and Suzie make a really cute couple. Sigmund had a son last year, whom we named him Freud, even though he doesn’t look overly bright! They have babies every year and move them along. Sigmund stays here year round, but Suzie flies off and returns in the spring. You would laugh to see the site of Suzie's home coming as she is allowed to eat his food and he keeps his wing overtop of her so she isn’t cold.
Sigmund and Suzie have a large family now, and every year they visit for a week, until he has had enough of their free-loading and he chases them off! What a rabble! He also tries to move the Bald Eagles and the osprey that come to nest – what a brave bird he is!
**Feel free to give him some food (there is a jar of dog chow on the kitchen counter for him) and if you wish, fill the bird bath with water, sit back and be entertained as a mixture of birds and Sigmund can put on quite the show!**
What a great spot. The views were unbelievable and the house has everything you could want. It was a great base for our adventures around NS and a great place to have some time to relax. Highly recommended.
Wow! What an excellent spot this cottage is. Clean, great location, all the amenities and views that you will write home about. Owners pride really shows. Loved our time there and all that Halifax has to offer!
My family of 4, with two young kids, and my mother recently stayed here. We enjoyed our 5 day stay so much that it saddened us deeply when we had to leave. We were treated to wonderful views of the ocean, ships, fishing boats, seals, and even a whale just outside our deck, not to mention frequent visits from Sigmund. This property is truly unique and served as a perfect spot to base ourselves out of for some Halifax and South Shore travelling. Thank you for the great stay.
This home was even more perfect than the pictures show! We were travelling with a 3-year-old, a 6-year-old, and three adults. From the moment we arrived, we didn't want to leave! The views from the deck overlooking the water are stunning, and the home itself is beautifully appointed and well-maintained. The owners really have thought of everything and have set this up to be a very comfortable stay. We used the hot tub and sauna almost every night and were able to sit outside on the deck, even while it was drizzling, as there is a roof overtop.
We HIGHLY recommend this house!
Thank you for the opportunity to stay in such a lovely home. The views from the deck are simply amazing and it was an easy commute to tour downtown Halifax. We were a party of 6 (3 couples) and after touring the eastern provinces for three weeks, this was our last stay and proved to be a lovely way to end our trip.
We have been to Halifax several times but have never enjoyed ourselves more than when we stayed in this casual, elegant, oceanside home! The location was amazing as you felt like you were living right on the Atlantic Ocean, yet still had every comfort you could possibly want....And, what a view! We barely left the house as we enjoyed sitting on the deck, and feeding Sigmund the seagull while we watched whales, seals and all kinds of boats go by.
The house itself was pristinely kept, exceptionally clean and tastefully decorated to blend in the seaside surroundings. We enjoyed relaxing in the in door natural water spa and sauna and loved the fact that we could still see the ocean while sitting in the jacuzzi! Guests were provided with a library stocked with all kinds of books and movies, games, and even a picnic basket. There was also a book that was thoughtfully provided that had information on the house, area, restaurants, take out menus and maps. This helped us plan our trip and was much appreciated. We will defiantely return to Halifax and can't wait to feed Sigmund the resident seagull again while enjoying a cold drink on the deck of this spectacular home.
York Redoubt, a National Historical site and park is just a few minute walk up the road. It has spectacular views of the water, great walking trails but has a unique history. Visit the site, and enjoy the hiking trails just minute from your door. Herring Cove, a beautiful community is just a five minute drive away where you can take gorgeous photos, go for walks and ejoy some fish and chips.
