West Island is situated in Buzzard's Bay, south of Fairhaven and Mattapoisett. The island is connected by causeway and bridge to the southern tip of Sconticut Neck, which juts out about three miles into Buzzard's Bay. Once you cross over the causeway and onto the island you enter a peaceful environment which is partly residential and partly a nature preserve. The majority of the island is covered by the West Island State Reservation, consisting of woods, marshes, hiking trails, and a beautiful mile-long sandy beach. The reservation, its trails and beaches are open year round to public use. The waters surrounding the island are generally shallow and are great for swimming, kayaking, fishing and other salt water activities. The homes on the island include both seasonal cottages and year round residences. Life on the island is very quiet. There are no stores, but all amenities, restaurants, retail shops, etc. are just a short drive away.
