OCEANFRONT LOVER'S DELIGHT*SURFER'S DREAM* BEACH HOUSE@LYMAN'S

Kailua Kona House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Step off the spacious oceanfront lanai, grab your surfboard, fishing pole, paddle board, fins and mask, boogie board or camera and walk our short hidden path to enter the ocean at Keolonahihi Cove! Or.... just sit back and be captivated by spinner dolphin, surfers, Humpback Whale action, canoe paddlers, para-sailors, swimmers, divers, inspiring tropical sunsets, romantic moonlight dancing on the water, exotic birds, and more.......

This place is a surfer's dream location!! It is also suitable for families, couples, romantic getaways, ocean sports enthusiasts, seniors, handicapped*, retreats, weddings, receptions, luaus, and business trips.

Our 2/2 vintage Hawaiian-style beach house overlooks Holualoa Bay and two of Kona’s premiere surfing breaks. Kamoa Point (Lyman's), a favorite surfing place of the Alii since the 1300's when the famous Chiefess Keolonahihi first rode her surfboard on the crests of the renowned 'left' surf break then known as, ' Kakala O Kamoa'. The cove named in her honor is accessed directly in front of our house in the same place where surfers have entered the ocean for hundreds of years. The Great King Kamehameha I learned to surf here while spectators viewed the surfing from a shoreline grandstand constructed of lava rocks along the north side of Kamoa Point in front of our house. You can enjoy this same awesome view and shoreline access the ancient Hawaiians enjoyed. If you surf, this is the best Kona has to offer. From the lanai, you can see the side view, or 'barrel' of the waves breaking at Banyans. Banyans, a great right break that is a short paddle across the bay, is another famous surfing spot. When the surf is big it can break clear across Holualoa Bay presenting a long wave that nearly connects Lymans and Banyans! This is an awesome spectacle to behold!

We enjoy incredible close interaction with the ocean from every room of our home and the newly expanded lanai. The panoramic view sweeps from Kamoa Point North to the Old Airport and beyond. Cruise ships are seen at the pier when in port. The ever changing ocean activity viewed from the lanai is an endless form of entertainment all hours of the day and night.

Comfortably furnished with big bamboo and Indonesian antique style furniture, stainless steel appliances, garbage disposal, microwave, dishwasher, washer, dryer, luxury bedding, towels and fully equipped kitchen. One bedroom has a king size carved four poster bed and the other bedroom has a Queen carved four poster. Each bedroom has bedside tables and lamps, a fan, dresser, and closet. There is one 7ft. big bamboo futon couch, another bamboo couch with two chairs and an ottoman and two leather recliners. A teak cabinet houses the hi-def LCD television/cable/wireless Internet, DVR and DVD player. We dine on the covered lanai, which has a teak dining table and six chairs, as well as a second glass/bamboo dining table. There is a King Size platform bed with a net canopy on the covered lanai as well as a big hammock for oceanside naps. The barbeque is always ready for your fresh catch!

This private retreat is hidden at the end of a short lane on the ocean side of Alii Drive just 3 miles from the Kona Pier. It's perfect location is within minutes to shopping, beaches, churches, beach parks, resorts and all that Kona has to offer.

We thoroughly clean all sinks, toilets, shower, floors, windows, screens, fans, appliances, vacuum mattresses, launder all bedding and towels, clean all outside areas, maintain yard and pond, and recycle/ remove all garbage after each guest. Weekly trash removal and recycling is provided. Fresh tropical flowers greet you with special Aloha!

Guestbook comments from the owner
Hello Cathleen,

I meant to write in your guest book before we left but we ran out of time Thursday morning. Our week in Kona was paradise! We could not have chosen a better place to stay. Sitting on the lanai, drinking a cup of coffee and watching the surfers was the perfect way to start the day. Our two boys slept on the big bed each night (except for the last night when we had a huge storm). We hated to be away at night and miss the sunset from your place. The T.V. and WIFI were nice to have but our kids were happy to be unplugged. It was a family time that we will never forget.

Thank you for sending the list of restaurants. It was great to refer to them when we were out and about. We had a fantastic dinner at Jackie Rays. They were so family friendly and the food was incredible. We did the morning Fair Winds trip which was fun and great snorkeling, especially for beginners like us. We spent a few days at Hapuna Beach which was perfect for boogie boarding. The most incredible thing we did was the night manta ray snorkel. We ended up booking with Sea Hawaii Rafting. I left a card with the contact number. Chris and Super Dave could not have provided us with a better experience. Their knowledge and respect for the mantas was unparalleled. We were the only people on the boat and we were so well cared for. They made us feel so safe and taught us so much. We had a 14 foot manta(named Chloe) swim inches from us for our own personal show. It was an unbelievable experience.

Thank you for the use of your home. We hope to be back soon.

BEAUTIFUL LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here from 01/12/14 - 01/19/14. It would be hard to find a better location in the Kona area. We spent the vast majority of our time out on the lanai - it's huge. We saw many breaching whales right from the lanai and during our stay the surf was up for a couple of days so we enjoyed watching the surfers right out front too. The house is located towards the end of Alii Drive so you are close to great restaurants and entertainment. The house itself was very comfortable and had the needed kitchen/household items. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay.

GREAT LOCATION, VERY QUIET AND RELAXING

  • 4 of 5
We had a great stay. The location is great if you want some privacy and aren't looking to be in the middle of everything. There is easy access to town and shopping and several close beaches. We had a great time exploring the park right next to the house. Sleeping out on the Lanai was amazing.

The property was clean and well maintained.

THIS HOUSE ROCKS!

  • 5 of 5
Loved this property! Great location - right on the water! Cathleen did everything to make our stay fabulous. We were staying in the house to watch the Ironman race and we asked if they had any bikes. Cathleen went and found us some bikes we could ride to the start of the race!

The best thing about this house was definitely the lanai and the view to the water. Can't say enough about how awesome it was.

GREAT AFFORDABLE CHOICE, A FEW MORE UPDATES NEEDED TO PUSH IT OVER THE TOP

  • 4 of 5
I recently stayed here with my husband while on our honeymoon. This place is as advertised, well maintained and we had a nice stay. The location is convenient to the airport, Kona shopping, and a great snorkeling beach (one below white sands). It is right next to a stand up paddle board and surfing cove but is still private since it sits high up. The house was well stocked with supplies and had almost anything you'd need. The lanai is big and great for eating meals, lounging and watching sunsets and the ocean. The owner also brought flowers. Most prior reviews are only positive but there were a few things that impacted our stay. The beach next to it is rocky, so it is not meant for sitting out or walking. A few of the kitchen utensils are old and posed challenges for cooking. It is a drive to anywhere else outside the Kailua-Kona area. A general comment is to determine what is important for your trip to the island before settling on a location/house. If it is just relaxing and shopping, this is a good option but if you want to go to Hilo, Volcanoes NP or Mauna Kea, this may not be as convenient. Alii Drive is right behind the house, so there is a fair amount of road noise for most of the day and evening no matter where you are. It doesn't have A/C, so all windows are just screened in. This was a negative for a few reasons: 1) it seemed hot when we visited (upper 80s/low 90s daytime, humid) and despite numerous fans in the house and ocean breeze, it never felt cool until the middle of the night; 2) the road noise easily transferred into the living areas and bedrooms; 3) we had some problems with ants, a cockroach and geckos inside the house; 4) the smoke from the grill got inside the house. Normally bugs and some heat don't bother us but we found it slightly buggy at night on the lanai. It started feeling campy as we couldn't find relief from the bugs or heat/humidity. The owner controls for bugs and we tried to keep food enclosed, but visitors are unavoidable since it is next to a brushy area. I wouldn't say some of what we experienced was completely unexpected, but a few things I outlined didn't seem obvious from the description (potential for bugs, downsides to no enclosed windows or A/C, noise from cars, etc). Overall, the house is a good, affordable choice with a great waterfront location and would be an almost unbeatable choice with a few more updates.

GOOD LOCATION

  • 4 of 5
My wife, mother-in-law, 3 month old baby girl, and both my parents had a good stay here. The main attraction of this house is the huge lanai. It includes plenty of space including a couch, some chairs with good reading lamps, two tables, a bed, and a full bathroom. It wraps around the side of the house which is where the barbecue and washer/dryer are. We spent countless hours on this lanai, playing with our baby girl or watching surfers, cruise ships and even a few dolphins and whales swimming by. The inside of the house has a rustic, simple feel to it. Both bedrooms and restroom are located on one side of the house, with the rest of the house being the living area. Again the living area was very open, with two doors leading to the huge lanai. The house was equipped with all the necessities, including beach gear and a stroller!

The location was good too. The drive to the main stretch of Kailua-Kona was only about 5 to 10 minutes where lots of restaurants and nightlife were located. To the south of the house are two great beaches. One is great for boogy boarding and the other is more protected and good for snorkeling. Further down the road is a shopping center including a longs drug, CVS, grocery store, and movie theater. If you need ice, the Banyan Mart just up Alii Drive to the North of the house is a great little quick stop. I also recommend stopping by the Kona Brewing Company, but don't forget to bring a growler from the house to fill up on some Hula Hefeweizen.

This was a good stay and we will be back. We have VRBO'd 4 times in Hawaii all on different islands and this place was a memorable one.

AMAZING DECK, ONLY A FEW STEPS TO THE WATER

  • 4 of 5
Four of us stayed here for 10 days and had a great time. The lanai was amazing, we rarely spent time anywhere else - listening to the waves, reading a good book - it doesn't get much better. There was a beach within walking distance which was fine for snorkeling and lying out and another place even closer with no beach, but would be good for a picnic. The two bathrooms, space inside and outside also meant that we didn't get under each others feet while we were there.

There were a few small things which could have been better - like the strange assortment of kitchen utensils (no cork screw, but a big fruit juicer...), one toilet which 'sang' - but then there was snorkeling gear which we could use.

Overall, a nice place close to Kona.

Map

The house right on the ocean (Makai) side of Alii Drive near Royal Poinciana Drive. It's a short walk to the Living Stones Church, Banyan Mart, shoreline fishing spots, snorkeling/swimming beaches, and ocean access. Surfing, SUP, snorkeling, and diving in front of the house and nearby.
