We chose Solitude as our home back in 1999 when we discovered that we could have the world's best snow, no lift lines, great views, and our home all in one location.
I love the mornings when I can enjoy my coffee and oatmeal while watching the mountain start to wake up. Watching the sunrise on Sunshine Bowl, the cats heading in from a long night of grooming, and the lifts start to spin all from the comforts of my home.
A friend and I took our boys on a trip to Solitude and had the pleasure of staying in this home. While the snow wasn't fantastic, the comfort and location of this house were stellar. Hitting good snow for a week ski trip is always a roll of the dice, but I wouldn't hesitate to return to this house. The pictures are a very accurate representation of the quality of the home. The owner was extremely accommodating and went WAY out of his way to make our stay easy.
The kitchen is awesome and had everything we needed. Pool table downstairs was a big hit as was the hot tub outside. The multiple washers and dryers were a bonus. The ski/board room in the lower level was great to keep gear organized, which isn't easy with 4 teenage boys. I would, though, recommend having easier outside access to the back door to eliminate the need to come in through the main part of the house (no biggie).
In regards to other comments from guests about ski in/ski out, I'd say we didn't have any issues. If there has been recent snow, you can ski from the back yard most, if not all the way, to the lifts. We just walked the short distance. To get back from the slopes it is easy walk even if in ski boots. But if you're too tired, just take the free gator ride!
The location was phenomenal. We were able to ski Solitude, Brighton and Snow Bird with ease. Park City, Canyons,etc... were close enough too. Loved the laid back demeanor of Brighton and Solitude (similar to Big Mtn/Whitefish) and the variety of terrain provided our group with plenty of options. Dining options were ample. Definitely stock up on groceries and beverages in Salt Lake!!!
If you are looking for a comfortable house in a great location you won't be disappointed with this one!
Great location. Sleeping accommodations excellent for family with children. Solitude management staff superb.
The home was wonderful, our family enjoyed our stay. We made a trail from the back and were able to access the village/lifts by walking. The views from the home are amazing! The kitchen was well equipped. (I hired a chef for my wife's birthday dinner...he loved the kitchen) There were only a few negatives about this property. 1. There is a gas fire pit that was not available for use by guests. This would have been nice while sledding in the back but after looking in the pit, some guests had thrown trash and cigarettes in it. I wouldn't have allowed anyone else to use it either! Also, I think there is a homeowner's association that prohibits the use of fire pits by renters. 2. Wine glasses and corkscrew are essential for vacationing guests! Overall, I would not let either of these things stop us from coming back. Also, the owner was kind enough to have several humidifiers available throughout the house. I would highly recommend using them.
Had a total of 4 families. 8 adults and 6 kids. The house fit us all very comfortably. The house is really top notch in amenities. My only complaints in the overall process was that the house was listed as "ski-in/out" and we could not figure out how this was possible even with a couple experienced skiers. We stayed the last week of March in a low snowfall season so potentially the snow was just not available to accomplish this feat. However, the kubota service combined with Solitude's shuttle and the fact that parking at the lowest base is free made this a realitively small issue.
My family is interested in renting the house again. I think that statement really says it all.
Thanks to the owners for making their house available for the rest of us to enjoy.
Although tempted to keep this house a closely guarded secret, we certainly owe it to the owners to offer up high praise for this lovely home. Jim was helpful and accommodating from day one, answering our e-mails, phone calls and questions promptly. The house, a quick 45 minute drive from Salt Lake airport, is beautifully laid out and furnished, and our party of 15 was very comfortable; enough space for grown ups to relax while the kids had fun in the (enormous and well equipped) game room. Whoever thought of 3 dryers - genius!! The hot tub was the perfect spot for after ski cocktail hour and the view is spectacular. The kitchen is also very well equipped and great to use - so much so that we never felt the need to go out for dinner, or even take advantage of the resort facilities that were available through the lodging. It was great to make a large meal and be able to have everyone sit comfortably around the two large tables.
Proximity to the slopes was a priority for us and the shuttles to and from the resort office made it easy to hit the slopes as and when we were ready. Solitude is a very pretty, European-feel resort (no crazy nightlife, perfect for families) and with Brighton a 5 minute drive away, the skiing is as challenging or comfortable as you like. The ski school is smaller and less "well oiled" than we are used to, but our 6 year old daughter had a great time, made good progress and some good "ski vacation buddies".
We grocery shopped at the bottom of the canyon before arriving in Solitude, which I would say is a must, as shopping is very limited and no-one wanted to keep driving up and down the canyon.
We can't wait to go back next year.
Can't wait to come back. We stayed a week and highly recommend this place. Quality throughout; the woodwork, the furniture, the appliances, even the beds. Fireplaces on every level that turn on with the flip of a switch. A hot tub on the deck with the best view of the mountain. Game room with all the amenities. Even the grill rocks with its direct gas connection. The location is ideal. Right there in Solitude (which is beautiful with its Euro style village at the base) and only a couple minutes from Brighton. While these resorts don't carry the big name of an Alta or Park City they offer big skiing without the crowds. The house is connected with the Solitude Club which means you have access to their outdoor heated pool and hot tub and incredible game and movie rooms for the kids. Best of all, they will give you a ride at the end of your ski day on their 4 wheel Kabota from the village right to the front door of the house. First class! Jim and Ida are terrific to work with.
