About Julie

Your host, Julie , was raised on the James Ranch in Durango, CO, left the paradise of the Animas Valley for six years to travel and complete a degree at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. John, a native of SW Colorado and a geologist with a degree from Fort Lewis College came into her life soon after arriving back to Durango. They quickly realized The James Ranch and the wholesome community of Durango was the place for them to live and raise a family.

Julie purchased this studio in 1993

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for allowing us the privilege to stay at your beautiful guest home. Everything was wonderful and all your little touches made it feel like a home away from home. I know this was the perfect choice for our weekend away. Thank you for the fresh eggs (they were delicious!). We enjoyed shopping at the market, having one of the best burgers from the grill, and just hanging out in the home. We hope we can stay with you guys again sometime. We'll definitely be coming up in the summer and stopping by the grill again!

Thank you and God Bless!

Wonderful place!

Ditto on all the positive comments below. We especially appreciated Julie's warm personality and her generosity with her time. She opened the farm store for us where we purchased the best steaks we've ever had and explained the history of the ranch. Highly recommended!

Great Little Gem

  • 5 of 5

The cabin rental at James Ranch lived up to all of my expectations. It was just the right amount of space for the 2 of us. It was warm and cozy, extremely clean, quiet and private. If you choose to stay there, arrange to get eggs, cheese, and possibly a steak or two. The food from James Ranch is the best. I wish I could have taken home another dozen eggs. The location was perfect, being half way to Purgatory for skiing and in town for dining and visiting with our adult children.

Our Home Away From Home….

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here this summer for the first time and fell in love. Not only are the owners extremely friendly, gracious hosts, but the studio is incredible…so warm and welcoming…plenty of room…this winter it was lit with a gas fireplace warming the studio…we enjoyed catching up on our reading looking out the enormous windows at the scenery which rivals a John Fielder photograph. The visit is never long enough…we can't wait to come back…until then…thank you Julie and John!

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd delightful stay at the James Ranch cottage. It was the perfect home away from home, as before! Great location for mountain access and not far from town amenities. The farm animals are fun! The family owners are great. The privacy and serenity are bar none. Wish we could just purchase the place and live there forever!

Stunning inside and out!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed there for a long weekend and wished we could have stayed longer. The studio is perfect with everything you need including a wonderful kitchen in case you want to eat at home. The views out the window are outstanding! The only thing we would change about our trip next time is staying longer…it was hard to leave. Thank you Otts! Elizabeth and Dave

Best place in Durango

  • 5 of 5

I highly recommend this place for couples or for a ladies getaway. The view is spectacular and the "cottage" is immaculate. Julie and John are such gracious hosts. We have stayed here twice now and plan to return again. The easy walk to the Harvest Grill at James Ranch makes for a nice evening out and a delicious dinner. The location of A Place At James Ranch is ideal. 15 min from the mountain and 15 from town. Plus having PJ's grocery store, Trimble Hot Springs, and the Honey shop so close is awesome.
