About The Owner

Your host, Julie , was raised on the James Ranch in Durango, CO, left the paradise of the Animas Valley for six years to travel and complete a degree at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. John, a native of SW Colorado and a geologist with a degree from Fort Lewis College came into her life soon after arriving back to Durango. They quickly realized The James Ranch and the wholesome community of Durango was the place for them to live and raise a family.

The Owner purchased this studio in 1993

Paradise

This was our 2nd delightful stay at the James Ranch cottage. It was the perfect home away from home, as before! Great location for mountain access and not far from town amenities. The farm animals are fun! The family owners are great. The privacy and serenity are bar none. Wish we could just purchase the place and live there forever!

Stunning inside and out!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed there for a long weekend and wished we could have stayed longer. The studio is perfect with everything you need including a wonderful kitchen in case you want to eat at home. The views out the window are outstanding! The only thing we would change about our trip next time is staying longer…it was hard to leave. Thank you Otts! Elizabeth and Dave

Best place in Durango

  • 5 of 5
I highly recommend this place for couples or for a ladies getaway. The view is spectacular and the "cottage" is immaculate. Julie and John are such gracious hosts. We have stayed here twice now and plan to return again. The easy walk to the Harvest Grill at James Ranch makes for a nice evening out and a delicious dinner. The location of A Place At James Ranch is ideal. 15 min from the mountain and 15 from town. Plus having PJ's grocery store, Trimble Hot Springs, and the Honey shop so close is awesome.

A step into the past to refresh you from today's fast pace !

As we open the old wooden gate we enter into our "secret garden home away from home" ! A refreshment of peace comes over us and we savor all that is to come from the wonderful James Ranch Market ! Grass fed Beef and Pork, Artesan Cheese, Farm Fresh eggs and wonderful Fresh Garden vegetables and flowers available daily in the Summer and Fall to nourish our cravings for healthy living!! As well as Cynthia's Harvest Grill for a relaxing meal under the sky !

The sweet and clean decor says "slow down", welcome to our world won't you come on in and be rested mentally and physically ! We love the awesome view, better than any medicine and the resident yellow labs, Izzy and Bella along with Xena the donkey makes the scene complete !

We go twice a year Spring and Fall for a reminder of how it used to be when we lived there a "million" years ago ! We hope you find what you are looking for here at A PLACE AT JAMES RANCH in Durango, Colorado !

Over the Top

  • 5 of 5
The Place is the best VRBO rental I have stayed at. The beautifully decorated and clean rental has a gorgeous view and I recommend ordering the James Ranch local foods, they are delicious, colorful and remind me of what food is supposed to be. Every detail for comfort has been thoughtfully provided from soft bath robes to a toaster oven, to tea bags and coffee grounds upon arrival.

The Real Deal

  • 5 of 5
John and Julie are both southwest Colorado natives, both born and raised on beautiful places, very knowledgeable and kind. Their three boys are fully engaged in the ranch life. It's a great opportunity for anyone who want to see a successful working ranch in action. The bed is so soft and comfy. The kitchen has everything you need. Places like these are what makes VRBO such a great website for connecting travelers to fab accommodations.
