Situated in the heart of Dunmore Town on a hill one block above the bay, Afterthought Cottage is a true gem that has been totally rebuilt using the finest of materials and fixtures and tastefully furnished by a proud and loving family to provide all modern comforts and conveniences without sacrificing its 19th century Bahamian charm. The house is bright and spacious with 8' ceilings on the first floor and cathedral ceilings on the second. The centrally air conditioned cottage sleeps eight, with a first floor king-size master bedroom and bath with built-in, user-coded safe and flat screen TV, spacious living room with large flat screen TV and DVD player, dining room seating eight, butler's pantry with sink, second dishwasher and wine/beverage cooler, office equipped with local Bahamian phone, Vonage phone for complimentary calls to the U.S. and Canada, Wi-Fi, computer printer/copier/fax machine and stereo system with iPod docking station, and an all new kitchen with island seating and stainless steel appliances. Off the kitchen is a covered outdoor veranda 40' long by 11' wide running the width of the house and boasting a wicker swing, outdoor living room with seating for eight and an outdoor dining area for eight. The veranda overlooks a terrace with gas barbecue, outdoor hot/cold shower and beautiful 14' plunge pool abutting a private, well-landscaped garden. Two kayaks are available for those sports enthusiasts. No need to worry about losing electricity, as Afterthought has its own full-house generator. All four bedrooms and the veranda have ceiling fans.
On the second floor there are three large bedrooms: one with a king bed, one with a queen and one with 2 twins. The second floor bathroom suite includes two individual lavatory/washrooms and a separate shower room. A new washer/dryer is conveniently closeted off the hallway. There is a spacious, newly-furnished 32' X 6' deck off the second floor and it provides easy access to the large 14' X 9' roof deck with its spectacular views of the bay and famous Harbour Island sunsets.
Our joyous, helpful house manager arrives mid-morning (except Sundays and Bahamian holidays) to provide housekeeping services, and our gardener maintains the grounds, garden and pool. Experience the charm of Dunmore Town with a short walk to the ocean and what many believe to be the most beautiful, pink sand beach in the world.

Our family has been visiting Harbour Island for the past 60 years. Our children have vacationed on Briland virtually every year of their lives. We want our renters to enjoy this beautiful, charming island and 'Home of Friendly People' as much as we have. There is no beach like the beautiful 3-mile long, pink sand beach that is talcum powder-soft, never hot to the feet, and whose onshore waves are filtered by the line of off-shore reefs. Enjoy walking on the firm, flat, wide stretch of sand, body surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, boating, bone or bottom fishing on the bay, and deep-sea fishing offshore.
Afterthought Cottage boasts charm without sacrificing spaciousness and fully updated conveniences. The house has full living and dining rooms both inside the house as well as outside on the veranda. The living and dining rooms, kitchen, veranda and second floor and roof decks all have stereo speakers driven by a high-end Denon receiver with I-pod docking station. Renters will not suffer the inconvenience of occasional power outages as the generator powers the entire house. The reverse osmosis water purification delivers pure water to designated faucets and the icemaker. All sink, shower and tub water is softened. Afterthought offers a lovely pool in a tranquil, private garden for cooling off and the use of two kayaks for sports enthusiasts. The easily-accessible roof deck is a perfect setting for evening cocktails while enjoying the spectacular Briland sunsets.
"We can't say enough about how beautiful the house is and how much we enjoyed our stay. If only it were longer, but we will be back."
Our family of five (kids 9,7, and 4) stayed for a wonderful week in Harbour Island, and Afterthought exceeded our needs and expectations. The location is central to everything--easy walk to stores, restaurants and the bay--but it feels away from the buzz of town. We usually took a golf cart to the beach because of the kids, but if you like to walk it's a very doable trek to the pink sands. The garden and patio feel lush and private because they have been so thoughtfully appointed and landscaped. The back deck is large and full of comfortable chairs and tables, and the pool is an awesome bonus. My kids spent hours in it everyday. The inside of the house is modern, comfortable and well furnished. The upstairs bedrooms are particularly charming and have great views. But the biggest thing that makes the house stand apart is that it has all the things vacation homes usually lack, like quality mattresses, nice linens, plenty of pillows, a reading lamp right where you need it, a fully-stocked kitchen, and ample glasses and silverware. The owners have also thoughtfully provided all of those little things you hate to have to buy or travel with, like hand soap, dish soap, paper towels, trash bags and cards and board games. They have also provided some big extras like beach chairs and kayaks. It's so easy to come here and just enjoy the island. And, of course, it was heaven to have Francine come and lighten the cleaning load. Made it even more of a vacation.
We just got back from a week's vacation at Afterthought and we could not be more pleased!! This home is an absolute jewel in the heart of Harbour Island.
Our party had 3 couples and 3 babies, and we found the house perfect for accommodating our needs. The home was exquisitely decorated and thoroughly cleaned and maintained daily by Francine. Having the babies, it was so convenient to be in the middle of town for popping into the grocery store, going for walks in the early morning, etc. Meanwhile, it was quiet, spacious, and truly relaxing. We cooked big dinners each night, and were repeatedly surprised at how complete the kitchen was in terms of pots and pans, counter-space, tupperware, etc.
The pool in the backyard was perfect for the adults and the babies. The babies loved the little waterfall and the hum of the waterfall was very tranquil. It was nice to have the option to stay back if one of the babies was having a non-beach sort of day. The grounds are nicely landscaped and well-maintained, so spending the day on the back porch, backyard, and in the pool was private, peaceful, and enjoyable.
We kayaked, went to the beach, explored the flats (and found sand dollars), strolled around town, chartered a boat to explore the harbor, and went deep sea fishing and caught more Mahi Mahi than we could eat AND a giant yellow finned tuna! Our vacation was memorable and in a word -- fantastic.
Thank you, Mallory, for sharing your special home with us!! We will definitely be back!
Our party of seven, including a 3 year old and two teenagers, had the most wonderful time at Afterthought for a week. The house is well laid out with every vacation rental amenity possible and the convenient location worked perfect for us. We were pleasantly surprised by the bedroom and the pool size, they were bigger than anticipated. The owners were very nice to deal with and prompt with responses. The house is just a few minute walk from the Governor's Dock and we actually walked everywhere, even with a 3 year old. Francine, the housekeeper, was very helpful and kept the house very clean. We can't wait to go back for an extended stay!
Just spend 4th of July with a few of my friends in this house and the owner stole our security deposit. Several items in the house were already broken, beginning with the AC downstairs. It was a sauna down there. I will say the house was pretty cozy but the owner stole our security deposit. Please be careful renting here.
Afterthought is a wonderful place to stay on Harbour Island. Everything is so clean and well maintained and Francine very helpful to answer any questions about the island. The house is in the middle of town, right next to the Dunmore Deli, Piggly Wiggly Market and other small shops.
We loved staying there and are looking forward to our next trip to Harbour Island.
We recently completed an extended stay at Afterthought Cottage with our family of 6, including four young children. The property is every bit as nice as it looks in the photos, and Francine (the property manager and housekeeper) could not be sweeter. Of course, Harbour Island is truly beautiful.
One thing that sets Afterthought apart from most of the other rental properties in Dunmore Town is that, although it is built in a traditional style, Afterthought is essentially new construction. The air conditioning really works throughout the home, and the generator really kicked on right away during the two or three power outages the island experienced during our 5-week stay.
The home's layout worked great for our family (the master is on the first floor, with the other three bedrooms upstairs). But the home would also work well for 3 (or maybe even four) couples travelling together, so long as those living upstairs didn't minds sharing the (remarkably efficient) shared bathrooms set up (essentially two separate powder rooms and a separate room with a shower). The two upstairs with queen beds are really nice (as is the third upstairs bedroom with two twins).
It was great to be able to jump into the plunge pool after a day at the beach or on the water, and our children (ages 3, 5, 8 and 9) were in it pretty much whenever they were home. We also got a lot of use out of the two kayaks. The location in the heart of town made it simple to send the kids to pick up groceries or go to the bakery (and the town is small and calm enough to make us quite comfortable having our kids enjoy that freedom).
Mallory was quite responsive to the single inquiry we had during our stay (regarding the shipping address for the property -- it turns out that they don't actually have addresses in Harbour Island, instead identifying the houses by name, color and nearby landmarks -- I loved that fact more than FedEx seemed to).
All in all, a great place to stay in a fun location on a beautiful island.
