David and Terry Crutchfield Birmingham, AL
Terry purchased this house in 2005
We built this lake house from a Southern Living plan called the Spring Lake Cottage. We wanted to have plenty of room so that anyone who wanted to come to the Lake with us could come and we would have room for them (The house is about 5600 sq ft). However, the major reason is that Smith Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in the US (#2 I think) and the boating and fishing are great!! Convenient to groceries (5 mi) and restaurants, Wal-Mart, etc. in Jasper 20 miles.
There is a white sandy beach right next door that we use for bon fires and beach parties. It is deeper when water is down in mid-late summer. There are high cliffs to jump off at certain points around the lake. Water depth across most of the Lake is around 150-200 ft deep.
This was our second stay at this wonderful home that Terry and David have shared with the rest of the world. Our trip consisted of 6 guys going to enjoy golf in some of the best kept secret courses in the country. This home takes the experience to another level.
We cooked three enormous, some complicated, dinners in the large main kitchen and got to enjoy each other's company while doing so. The beds were very comfortable.
Highly recommend it to any one with a large group that can appreciate the finer things in life.
Our family had a wonderful time at the lake. The house was plenty big enough for the 12 of us. It was especially nice that we could all gather in the kitchen without crowding. The view is outstanding and we so enjoyed the beach area. It is definitely a spot we want to revisit.
Our stay at the Crutchfield's lakehouse was nothing short of spectacular. We had family and friends going and coming all week, and everyone had nothing but positive things to say about this place. Going around Smith Lake, you immediately notice that many homes are high up on bluffs or steep hills and require long walks up and down stairs to access the water. This home has a nice, gently sloping lawn right down to the dock.
Speaking of the dock, there is a generously sized swim platform with 2 wooden rocking chairs and a wooden bench swing, plus a table and 4 chairs. If you don't have a boat, it's a great spot for hanging out by the water, UNLESS it's a major summer holiday in which case swimming is just plain dangerous (see pros/cons).
I just thought I'd list some pros and cons of this property.
-Great lawn, wonderful view of lake from 3 of the 7 bedrooms, each with its own balcony.
-Spacious kitchen with large table
-Pool table, sound system, large TVs with satellite
-Huge back deck, again with an awesome view
-Tons of parking room for vehicles and boat trailer
-Comfortable sleeping arrangements
-Located on a main point of the lake. When the lake is busy, boat traffic comes much closer than is courteous or safe and the wakes rock the dock violently. This only happened on Labor Day, the rest of the week was calm. If you want to do a lot of swimming with small children on a summer holiday, a property located in a protected cove may be more suitable but might not offer the great view.
-Owner's boat/jet skis are dry docked in the slips, so be sure to bring plenty of dock bumpers if you bring or plant to rent a boat. It's not ideal for using your own boat if you don't want it rubbing during your stay. High boat traffic days would intensify potential for damage.
-Single oven in kitchen can make meal prep for 20 people a challenge.
-6 of 7 main bedrooms require travelling a long flight of stairs. Elderly would get tired.
Every property is not everything to everyone. This property maximizes common space and encourages time spent together with a large group present. Children have plenty of space to go do their thing on the basement level or in the loft in the main floor living room. I'd go again in a heartbeat.
Last, but not least, Mrs. Crutchfield is a pleasure to deal with. She's very responsive by e-mail and text. Thanks for the hospitality and hopefully we'll be back!
Comfortable place with plenty of privacy. Had lots of fun with our small children on the lawn in the back yard. Beautiful view of the lake. I recommend the place!
I have used VRBO around the world and rented numerous houses. This is by far one of the best properties I have stayed in. The rooms are beautifully decorated. The space is perfect for a large family gathering. Lots of room to spread out, but great living and dining room space when you want to be together. The beds are very comfortable and the screen porch is a little slice of heaven. The kitchen is incredibly well stocked with everything from cookware, to spices, to big mugs for morning coffee. While the property is pretty far from everything, we planned meals and food well in advance and only had to make one run to the grocery store. The quiet and solitude is well worth the drive. Terri is very easy to work with and is very responsive. We are booking now for next year!!!
We have a group of 10 guys who go on a "fishing trip" annually. This is our 3rd year to go to Smith Lake. This was our favorite property yet. We had enough beds for each guy to have a bed plus one on a couch. There was plenty of room to spread out. The kitchen has everthing you would need. The house would be great for 2 to 3 families. The walk to the lake was easy. The boat dock was good. The master bedroom has the Taj Mahol of bathrooms in it. The game room with a pool table and extra kitchen was great. The Crutchfields were easy to deal with and reachable. We hope to book this for next's years trip as well.
