The “Yurt in the Sky” is above and away from the bustle of civilization. Here you have wide open spaces – ocean, sun, sky and the contrast of the rich lava rock with the delicate red Ohia flowers. Here you can live simply but very comfortably -- off the grid but with almost all the conveniences of home. Stock up on your favorite foods and enjoy meals on the deck gazing out at sky and sea, feeling the cool breezes from across a thousand miles of unobstructed ocean. Then, you can descend from your 4500 ft. retreat to Big Island’s beaches, botanical gardens, volcanoes (30 beautiful miles away) snorkeling, adventure attractions or entertainment spots. South Big Island Beaches are about 30 minutes away, greatest snorkeling in the state is about 45 minutes and Kona with all its beaches and activities is about one hour.
When you come back, sip some wine or some freshly brewed tea as the sun sets, cook up your favorite meal on the propane stove or microwave oven and get ready for the best show on the Island: the stars! You can lie on the deck or view them all night inside through the circular skylight. If the air is chill, just turn on the romantic fireplace. You will be warm in minutes. Curl up with a book, or stay in touch with the distant world with high speed internet. (Ask about our fully loaded netbook computer.)
Why stay in one more conventional resort room, when you can experience first-hand a whole new way of life – off the grid? Why not give it a try?
Hi future guests! I’m a retired community college teacher from Wisconsin in partnership with my son David, who fell in love with these islands as a student at the University of Hawaii. Designing and building our “Yurt in the Sky” has been a fun joint project. This year David is going back to school in Hilo, so we’re happy to share our new retreat with you. About me? I keep busy here in Wisconsin with outdoor sports, movies and playing music. My son David is a kind of “Techie guru” so he's at the phone to answer techie questions. I'm always here to answer all the other questions. Also we have several local “helpers' who will be there for you.

We looked at many lovely lots on the Big Island and at first were drawn to the lush jungle atmospheres of the lowlands. But when we visited the exhilarating height of this little-known area, with its spacious views and friendly, laid-back people, we decided within a day.
This “Yurt in the Sky” is very different from other rentals. First, we can offer you a low price because we have little overhead. This frees up your vacation budget for more fun. Second, in contrast to other yurt rentals, we offer total privacy and independence. There is no sharing of any facilities. Third, we have NO bugs or other pesky creatures. Just leave the door open all day! Fourth, although we are 'away from it all,' it’s easy to get around. The paved roads to the yurt are excellent and from down in the nearby village of Ocean View there are free busses around the entire island! Finally, our 150 degree view of the distant ocean below is spectacular.
My family and I stayed at the Yurt in the Sky one night of our week on the Big Island and wished we could have moved it around with us - it was perfectly cozy. Despite the cool evening temps up in the lava flow slopes of Ocean View (it's out there!), the yurt was comfortable once we got the propane fireplace lit. Plugged in our laptop and used the wireless to play some Jazz and watch a comedy by the flickering fire. The loft was perfect for the kids, the bedroom was great for us - comfortable. Could see the stars through the yurt's center skylight and from out on the deck, the night looked like diamonds with so little ambient light around us. The morning sun awoke us given the yurt's walls are translucent (but not see through). Breakfast on the propane grill of pancakes and bacon. Fridge was large enough for us to put our whole cooler in it for the evening (we stocked up in Hilo with groceries, ice and a styro cooler to keep costs down). Simply loved the Yurt and Marilyn's instructions were spot on about lighting the fireplace, accessing the unit, changing the propane tank (came in handy!), etc. Would definitely recommend staying here if you have a chance. On par with hotel prices in the area, but the experience is far more memorable. If you stay multiple days, it'll be cheaper than most hotels since there's only one cleaning fee per stay.
Thank you for sharing your adventure home with us! We had a fantastic time!! We only stayed one night but it was a cool adventure. We had been staying further north on the island and wanted to do a green sands beach day. The yurt helped to break up the driving and added an exotic glamping experience. I borrowed "glamping" from a previous reviewer. It's true, you feel like you are outside but are well protected and warm for the night. It rained at sunset. We stayed dry inside and the propane stove kept us toasty. After the rain cleared, so did the sky and the stars were super clear and bright. Take warm clothes for star gazing. It is quite brisk outside at night.
We had a fantastic lunch at the local Cafe (not sure the name) but was right next to Dj's pizza place where we got pizza and scrumptious desserts for supper. Paired with a bottle of wine that we packed and a couple cocktails for the men, we had nice meal in that night.
Everyone loved it!! Plan to pick up food in town, ocean view, for some great local cuisine and make sure to take a pair of warmer pj's for a comfortable and memorable night in the yurt.
Thank you again!!
We loved staying at the Yurt in the sky! It was very reasonable, had everything we needed and was still rustic enough to make us feel like we were having an adventure! We loved being away from the touristy areas of Hawaii and being off the grid! The shower was great and the fireplace was excellent as it did get very cold at night. The fridge wasn't working but we were brought a block of ice right away and were refunded for one night. The view was incredible especially of the stars on a clear night. We were close to many interesting sights including Volcanoes National Park, Kau Coffee Mill, Kula Kai Caverns, the South Point and our favourite: Green Sands Beach. The bed was too soft for us, but I think we're just used to a firmer mattress. We rented a truck and had a fantastic off-the-beaten track experience! We would recommend it highly!
Although our stay was short it was the best part of our stay. We cant wait to come back and visit. One tip for future visitors: make sure you find out how to locate the property before it gets dark. Once you find it you will be able to navigate there in the dark but if you had to do it on the first day you would have a difficult time.
We really enjoyed the uniqueness of Yurt in the Sky. We were there only one night and it provided the perfect stay for a night on the Big Island. We wish we could have stayed longer. The yurt was about an hour from the Volcanoes Park, which wasn't a big deal for us. We actually headed out there 3 times in the day were there. It is definitely best if you consider this fancy camping. If you have any allergies to dust, be sure to take a Claritin before you go, 3 of our party had allergy issues, which may have been cleared up by a bit of airing of the yurt. There were spider webs on the doors and sky light but a quick swish with the broom cleared those right up. Also, it gets very chilly way up there. Unfortunately, we did not try to turn on the propane fireplace until very late in the evening. We were unable to get it working, and really did not want to bother anyone so late. Instead, we all bundled up and cuddled. The kitchen had lots of lovely spices and bits and bobs to help round out meals. We moved the propane stove onto the porch for cooking with no problem. We also found a few handy solar lamps to carry around at night. We kind of loved the neighborhood and looking at the stars. My husband kept looking at realty signs trying to convince me we should just buy a lot :) We would definitely recommend a visit, if laid back is your style. Communication with the owner was quick and easy and we were supplied with great tips and info on the yurt prior to our arrival.
Pros - Interesting experience staying in what is essentially a big tent but with a flush toilet and regular bed. The views are amazing. Cheap price. Cons - This yurt is very well used and really needs some maintenance and a good cleaning. For example, rain poured through the skylight. Also, the yurt is further away from Volcano National Park than advertised. It's 52 miles to the park, not 30. We did not use the propane cook stove because the instructions clearly stated that it was not to be used indoors.
