Nice place...with a few problems
We are Cal Poly alumni and have come back to stay in Avila Beach every year since we graduated (17 years ago). This was our first visit to this particular unit. I'll start off by saying that the interior was very well appointed and first class. The unit is roomy and many nice amenities were provided. The underground (and secure) parking is definitely a huge plus. The gated courtyard provides a nice place for the children to play and meet other kids from the adjoining units.
I only had two complaints about our stay.
First, the upstairs TV didn't work. We called the property management company on the first day to let them know. It took 2 follow-up calls and a full 3 days for them to send someone out. Then they never called us back. On the fourth day, I called to inquire and they said, "Yes, the TV is broken. We will have to get the owner's approval to replace the TV." When I asked when an operable TV would be placed upstairs, they told me that it wouldn’t be until after we left. So, no working TV in any bedroom.
Secondly, and perhaps a bit more annoying, this unit backs up directly to the alley behind the Custom House Restaurant. We discovered early on that at closing time, the folks at Custom House use that back ally to clean restaurant and kitchen equipment. So, every night between 10-11pm, there was incredible racket. Think of bit pots and pans being slammed against the inside of dumpsters, kegs being rolled around, stacked up and slammed together, etc. Then again in the early morning (around 3:30am), the steam cleaning crew arrived to pressure wash all the mats that were placed in the ally. Loud gas engines and high pressure water and steam...all at 3:30am and all RIGHT UNDER OUR WINDOWS. Ugh.
Luckily, the master bedroom is on the other side of the unit. Unluckily, the kid’s and our guest’s rooms were right over all that action in the ally. No one could sleep through it...even with windows closed.
So to summarize, the unit was very nice and we really appreciated all the effort that went into decorating. But, for the price we were expecting working fixtures (or at least a quick response to a broken item). Additionally, the prolific night time noise in the alley behind the unit makes the experience in the two back rooms less than desirable.
Owner's Response: Update: With all of the new businesses moving into the retail shops, it is unfortunately difficult to enforce a noise ordinance. Every condo in the downtown core will have the same issues. It is one downside to being so close to everything.
Ryder,
We are terribly sorry for the less than desirable experience you had during your stay. We are going to address the noise issue with the neighboring bars/restaurants and hopefully find a solution. We have also spoken with our management team about how to handle repairs in a more efficient manner.
We would love to have you back again and hope that your concerns have been addressed. Avila Beach has wonderful weather in the fall months, and is considered the best time of the year!
Your host,
JR
