The Garden Suite was built three years ago in the basement of our 1928 heritage home. It was renovated for visiting family members and has been lived in by our daughter and granddaughter for the last two years.
The Garden Suite is airy and bright with windows in every room. It has a separate entrance that takes you through a vestibule with lots of space for coats, skis, bikes, etc. The main room is a well-appointed kitchen and dining room. The den is south/west facing and was originally a child’s bedroom. It is the brightest room and includes a television and DVD, and a small lending library for avid readers. The sofa bed is queen size and very comfortable. The bathroom has a heated tile floor; it is fairly small and includes a toilet, vanity sink and shower. Finally the bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed and a closet.
Guests are welcome to use the lovely back garden (in summer) for barbecues or just to sit in the shade of our walnut tree while watching the apples, plums and pears ripen. We request advance notice as this is a shared area. Similarly, the laundry area can be made available to you on request.
From our location, one can walk to any area of Nelson quite easily, and we have bus service one short block away. Whether you are visiting with family nearby or enjoying one of the many outdoor sports or local cultural events, the Garden Suite at The Hive will provide a comfortable, clean, well-equipped and accessible home away from home during your stay in Nelson.
We are a five minute walk to the beach, 25 minute drive to Whitewater ski hill, 40 minutes away from Castlegar Airport, a four-hour drive from both Kelowna airport and Spokane airport (Washington State).

We are Andrew and Dorita, boomers with an empty nest! We have lived in Nelson for close to twenty years , having resided in Victoria, Toronto and Montreal (Morin-Heights) after our arrivals here from the Netherlands and the UK. We are both still working, with Andrew coordinating a social service cooperative while Dorita teaches at a Waldorf school. We both enjoy travelling, outdoor sports like hiking, biking and skiing, as well as a regular game of Scrabble or “Oh Pshaw”. We enjoy having guests and appreciate hearing stories from our visitors, That being said, we have a high regard for personal space and are happy to provide a quiet, private accommodation for you and your companion(s).
Our home and vacation rental are located on a quiet, sunny street in a unique town in the middle of the Selkirk range along the banks of Kootenay Lake, an eighty kilometer-long lake. We have year-round access to some of the best recreational activities imaginable (as listed) and the town of Nelson is well-known for its cultural richness and the diversity of its residents.
We live in a quiet residential area located within minutes walk of beautiful hiking trails and breath-taking views of Kokanee Glacier and Kootenay Lake. We enjoy hiking, biking and swimming during the dry, warm summers as well as the incredibly deep snow of winter skiing.
Kootenay Lake is 100 km long, pristine, deep, clean, glacier-fed lake. It is great for watersports, especially kayaking, sailing, fishing, swimming.

Backcountry skiing is available in pristine areas with local guides. Our geographic location is known for its heavy snowfalls and deep powder ski conditions.
