We like to travel and decided to make this into a vacation spot at home with lush low maintenance landscaping and modern upgrades. When in Southern California, this becomes our vacation home.

Beautiful home!!

We had a wonderful time at the home, it's on a gorgeous property and we had great weather to enjoy the nice outdoor space. There were 10 of us and we all had a place to sleep comfortably. The house was stocked well with extra linens, towels, paper plates and cups, etc. I had a couple questions about supply locations and Eric was available immediately to answer all of my questions. We were in Pasadena for a football game and there was plenty of driveway space for the 4 cars. Next time we're in Pasadena we will definitely choose this rental property again.

Great house in a great location - close to LA, Burbank, Hollywood, Pasadena...

Watching the hummingbirds zip around the gardens while soaking in a hot tub, sipping tea on the back deck or just enjoying the warm, quiet morning talking with friends - this is a great place to start your day in the northern LA suburbs.

This home in Altadena is nestled against the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains. Just a few minutes from the small town, it seems remote. Entering through the gate reveals a circular drive fronting a large ranch home surrounded by olive trees and gardens, including a few lemon and grapefruit trees next to the driveway.

The house is very spacious, with a very large informal living room, family/play room, large formal dining room, breakfast room, well equipped kitchen and four bedrooms with queen size beds. Hardwood floors throughout, granite counters in the kitchen and modern appliances are some of the highlights inside. Very comfortably accommodating the seven people in our party, there is plenty of room to spread out when you need some space.

A brick patio off of the living room is adjacent to the hot tub, while a deck spreads across the back of the home where steps lead down into back yard, including a small sitting area with a fireplace. The grill is fairly large and we used it to cook a couple of meals.

The owner/manager was responsive and very easy to work with. We booked at the last minute - we had rented a different home for our trip but found it was already occupied when we arrived - it took less than 12 hours from initial contact to getting into this home.

A couple things kept this from being an Excellent rating - though I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. The house has two A/C units, and the one that cools the bedrooms did not cool as well as the other - the owner has since reported getting this serviced - but during a week when temps exceeded 100, our room hovered at 78-80 degrees at night which is a little warmer than I'd prefer. Most of the outdoor furniture needs repair or replacement, particularly cushions. We used beach towels from the linen closet (and there are a lot of towels) to cover and use the chairs outside. It also would have been nice if the fans in the family/play room had worked, as this room got warm in the afternoons, even with all of the shades/shutters closed.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this home, and would definitely consider staying there again.

Owner's Response: This was a last minute reservation which we were able to accommodate. The guests were able to move in the next day and could have moved in the same day except I had already let housekeeping reschedule their time to the following day. But by 2PM the next day, it was ready. The outdoor furniture suffers from sunlight and animals. We get raccoons, possums, and squirrels that occasionally like to tear the cloth and vinyl furniture. We repaired it in April but it seems that they are at it again. Furniture is being repaired again where possible and replaced as necessary. The house has 2-4 ton R-16 air conditioners which are more than adequate for the 4500+ square foot house. Once notified of the lack of cooling on one side, our HVAC tech came out and serviced the unit. The tech found that the R410 Freon was low and needed recharging. Once done, it blows cool again. Unfortunately this was done on the day of departure. Fans in the meantime are being upgraded with remote controls and new three way switches. It is a very large house on 1.5 acres offering lots of amenities. In general we are responsive to request for service with housekeeping located nearby and techs available but have to be scheduled in. Our goal is to get 5 stars.

Great scenic escape for large family

We met here for a family reunion and upon arrival were immediately overwhelmed by the spaciousness of the home, and the beauty of the scenery and surroundings. The home was much larger and more beautiful than the photos. We were very pleased having this extremely large home and its comforts vs. a hotel. Furthermore, it is a better bargain than a hotel considering all that you get; everyone can be together or have their own space. The home is surrounded by the mountains, gardens, landscape citrus trees and is conducive to relaxation meditation and reflection. I felt it was strategically located for tourist. We made it to Universal within 30 mins. Santa Monica Pier within 40 mins and the Mountains around San Bernardino within 50 mins. It was great to spend the day in the city and come back to such a relaxing and inviting home to unwind at night. Eric allowed us to have a group of 12. Four couples had their own bedrooms and there were sleeper sofas and mattresses to accommodate single adult children. It was extremely convenient to have 3 1/2 baths and a blessing to be able to use the appliances as if they were our own. Having appliances and a washer and dryer is distinctive. We had a couple of minor glitches and Eric and housekeeping were very timely in resolving the issues. We would stay there again without hesitation. One disclaimer that I would like to know if I was traveling for business. The wifi lagged when several devices were connected but I was there to "unplug" and de-stress so it was not a major concern. Eric and housekeeping was sympathetic and provided great customer service. I would highly recommend this home without hesitation or reservation.

Owner's Response: HOUSE SIZE AND AMENITIES We welcome large numbers of people but have concern about too many. The house is very large and can accommodate lots of people. Over 6 people and we are very cost effective to a hotel. We limit it to the number of beds and extend the numbers past 11 on a case by case basis so everyone is happy. Of course children are more adaptable to air mattresses and cribs as needed. The house has lots of amenities we are happy to share. The house is configured so we can also vacation at home. Guests are welcome to use everything. Guests sometimes buy and leave items that others can use and we leave them in place. WIFI AT&T and Verizon are doing something about an internet access merger in the area. It affected our access. We use the AT&T phone line. Once we contacted our ISP about low connectivity, they jumped on the problem and told us about the merger. Fixed the problem once identified. WIFI links in the area are typically 3G and sometimes connects as 4G. More antenna sites are being built in the area with typical residential resistance. We are in the foothills, close to nature so not a lot of internet traffic warranted for antenna sites but that is changing. Over time WIFI internet access should improve.

Lovely location and setting. This large home is for a large group with a wonderful outdoor living space. This home is being improved on a continuous basis and I expect the home to show and live wonderfully in the future. The management seems quite conscientious in its efforts to provide a nice choice to vacation renters.

I provided an earlier review that was more critical, but the management company chatted with me and they are working on issues I raised. I would definitely rent this house again.

Owner's Response: The guests were at the house for a wedding in nearby LaCanada. Due to the large number of different people in the house over time certain improvements and recommendations were brought to our attention. One was the number of electrical outlets in some of the bedrooms. The house is upgraded with a 200 amp panel and we are adding room receptacles over time to conform to modern living for use with lots of electronic devices. Outdoor lighting is by solar which is “romantic” but may be hard to get around if you are not familiar with the paths from earlier walks. Higher density is being added to provide more lighting while keeping the beauty of the night in place. The queen sofa bed is being replaced in the family room with one that blends in more with the room and is more comfortable. The reading room bookcases are being reduced to give more open space. The kitchen and breakfast room have ample granite counter top space but a wooden cutting board is now added to minimize surface damage. It has lots of cutting utensils for food prep which are being sharpened for large preparations. Low flush, dual high efficiency toilets have been added to the MBR and center Jack & Jill room to help conserve precious Southern California water. Many of these improvements were planned but have now been implemented due to the constructive criticism provided. We welcome guests pointing out improvements to make their stay enjoyable. This house is ideal for large groups and small events like pre-wedding parties with small gatherings of people.

Good experience

We stayed here for Thanksgiving with grandparents and children. Overall we had a great experience. It was spacious and accommodated our family well. The kitchen had all the pots, pans, dishes, etc that we needed for our stay. There was even a double oven and fancy coffee maker. The dining room was big enough for all of us to have meals together. The kids enjoyed the game/family room and exercise room in the basement. There were plenty of linens. The house felt very comfortable and we felt very welcome.

The location is right at the foot of the mountains, which is great if you want to go hiking. It's a bit far from LA attractions, but we enjoyed the quiet. Sitting outside in the spa at night was very peaceful. If it had been warmer it would have been great to barbeque and sit on the deck. We went in to Pasadena for breakfast.

There were a couple of issues while we were there, but the managers worked hard to take care of us. The heater for 1/2 of the house died, but space heaters were quickly provided. There was also a mix-up about the dates, but everything was sorted out.

The beds were just okay, master bed was definitely the best. The house appears old and need some touchups (paint and minor maintenance) in a few places, but other than the heater everything worked.

We would definitely recommend this to friends and family.

Owner's Response: We are happy to accommodate guests if issues come up. We have 2 4-ton units which easily heat and cool the spacious house. When one heater went out our tech was immediately deployed and found the problem. Space heaters were distributed in the living room, dining room, and breakfast room as needed to serve as a temporary. We have on-going upgrade projects and painting is part of it. The house was built in 1930 and listed in Architectural Digest as a unique house for the time-the California Experience. It was spacious then and is bigger now on the 1-3/4 acre lot with a lot of the features preserved such as brass knobs and crown molding on high ceilings. It has been upgraded to accommodate modern living.

I'd consider the title to "Spacious Rustic Home with Many Amenities in the Pasadena Foothills"

I had college friends visiting from the East coast and Midwest for a mini reunion. The Altadena Estates home is less than 5 minutes from our home and served as an extension, providing needed extra bedrooms and a number of complementary amenities. Though the actual guests were friends, I was the customer.

All my guests were in their early 70s but the Altadena Estates home would have been suitable for us 40 years ago. Some guests went hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains to the north. All thoroughly enjoyed both homes.

The Altadena Estates home would be very appropriate for a small family reunion provided there are sufficient adults to watch young children.
