My wife, son, and his fiance, and I just returned from a week on Harbor Island. Having stayed in a variety of vacation rentals over the last several years, we found this particular trip noteworthy for various reasons. First, how many times does the advertising and hype live up to one's expectations? Perhaps it's just our experiences, but the occurrence is rare. However, in this instance, the location, house, and owners all exceeded our expectations. Harbor Island is EXACTLY as described. We felt as though we were on our own private island. The area is truly the exact opposite of the commercialized Hilton Head. It is peaceful, serene, and definitely isolated from the rest of the world. While one doesn't have to drive an unreasonable distance for shopping and entertainment, it is certainly not out the back door. The wildlife is abundant and mesmerizing. The last few evenings we were there, dozens of dolphins played along the shoreline for hours. Next, the home was the classic, traditional East Coast beachhouse. Its decor and oceanfront location were, once again, EXACTLY as described. The best way I can capture the essence of where we stayed would be to say from the moment we walked in until the moment we left, we never felt like we were in a rental. We truly felt like we were in a "home." Last the owner we communicated with was simply wonderful and fulfilled our expectations EXACTLY as we envisioned them. From the initial contact inquiring about the home -- and all through our stay, she responded to all questions and concerns promptly, courteously, and much more like a friend than an owner. From her advice on securing reservations to where to eat, she shared her personal and invaluable insights. Because of her willingness to open up her beautiful home, she provided us with some cherished memories.
