BEAUTIFUL PLACE FOR OUR DESTINATION WEDDING

  • 5 of 5
The week we spent at the Villa during our Destination Wedding: Punta Uva, Costa Rica was amazing. The photos of the villa are great but when we toured the grounds it was more beautiful than expected. It was not a 4 star hotel but what we got was so much more. The villa was very rustic, non-commercial, and fully immersed in nature which made for a great experience. Every morning we woke up to the sound of wildlife in the trees which we occasionally caught glimpses of (howling monkeys, iguanas, and sloths). We stayed in the 6 bedroom house which was clean and very accommodating with screened windows, warm water showers, a fully equipped kitchen and outside dining area. One thing to note is to bring your own drinking water.

The staff was great and helped us with whatever we needed. A nice woman came to clean the bathrooms daily and offered to help us clean after the wedding. During the wedding we used the large gazebo as our dance floor and set up tables, chairs and tents near the Jacuzzi area for our guests. The topping on the cake was the direct path to what felt like a private beach.

What a beautiful, amazing experience.

JUST A PERFECT PLACE TO SHAKE OFF CIVILIZATION AND ITS DISCONTENTS

  • 5 of 5
This place is simply magical. If you love unspoiled nature, the outdoors, wildlife, exotic birds, sounds of the jungle and vibrant colors, then this is your place! If you prefer the fake manicured lawns of Florida, then please stay there and don't spoil it for the rest of us who enjoy a little getaway from man-made stuff.

We stayed at this property for 3 nights in November and it was terrific (even if November is not the best time to visit given how much it rains). The property is really nicely laid out and well maintained by Cruz, the friendly caretaker who will also bring you coconut water and show you birds and wildlife. Both him and Juanita, the house maid, were extremely friendly and helpful, and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. The house is spacious, comfortable, clean and well equipped; there is ample space for parking if you choose to drive; and there is a convenience store with all essentials just around the corner. But my all-time favorite was the gazebo - made entirely from recycled materials, it is not only inviting for an afternoon beer, but is also the perfect place to curl up with a book or just hang out after a day at the beach. The pictures on the web site simply don't do it justice. There is a BBQ area, too, although we didn't use it. The beach itself is a short 2-minute walk from the house and feels completely secluded. You can see sloths, monkeys, tucans and a whole host of other exotic animals directly on the property, which for us was the biggest draw. Puerto Viejo is just a short drive from the property, too, if you want to go out for dinner or a drink.

What you should keep in mind: The beach may be tricky with little kids (no guards). There is wireless internet throughout the house, but as in most places in CR, it is annoyingly slow. The jacuzzi did not have hot water, though frankly this was not an issue in the tropical heat. Wet clothes/towels barely dry and the mosquitoes are everywhere (bring your favorite bug repellent and plan on using it all the time) but this is the same throughout the tropical paradise that Costa Rica is.

All in all, we had a fantastic time and would highly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for an authentic, rustic, non-commercial Caribbean experience with much local charm. Pura Vida!

A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for three nights and my only regret is that we did not stay longer. The property is in an extremely good condition. I believe the pictures on the website do justice to the beauty of the place. The grounds are beautiful and it is obvious that the groundskeeper Cruz spends a good amount of time maintaining the property. The gazebo area is a great place to relax. From the house, it is a very short walk to a gorgeous and secluded beach. When you look at the beach from the sea, you feel like you stepped back in time because all you see is nature (no houses or anything else made by man).
As for the house, it exceeded our expectations. Reading some other reviews, it is surprising that lizards, frogs, spiders, etc were a problem for certain people. Part of what we loved about staying in Punta Uva and at this property was the closeness to nature. I would advise those who prefer a sterile environment with no wildlife to stay in a resort. For those that love nature, this is it. (We saw monkeys, sloths, and different birds while on the property.)
As for the location, you are a quick drive from Puerto Viejo. You can also find most basic goods at a convenience store right across the property.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend this property for people that are looking to immerse themselves in nature and disconnect from whatever they may be doing in their daily lives.

DON'T STAY HERE

Pictures are deceiving.
We knew that this was not going to be a 5 star but we expected cleanliness and a little more. First they told me they would have an inflatable mattress since we had a large party. When we showed up Cruz took out of an old camper a very smelly inflatable and said it had a hole and there was nothing he or we could do about it. We had to make children share tiny twin beds. The bathrooms were very dirty and Juanita "cleaned" every day. She does not know how to clean. One of the worst things that happened is that one morning I opened the "pantry" and noticed that a creature had eaten through the plastic bag of sandwich bread and served itself to some of the bread. I immediately told Cruz and he said he would try to get it. He didn't have any traps so my husband and I ran into town to get some. That didn't work. A few days after; all the men in our party helped Cruz caught it by moving the refrigerator and taking it outside. They caught it... a huge black mousse. Like I said we were not expecting a 5 star stay but a clean mousse free house. The screens on the walls were ripped and so we lived with a lot of creatures mostly lizards but the mousse NOT acceptable. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!

Owner's Response: We take your feedback very seriously. New screens have been installed to make the house inaccessible to raccoons and other animals from the rainforest. A yearly pest control contract is in effect, but even
then, leaving food on the counters can attract problems, so new
plastic containers have been installed for safe storage. We regret
the owner was not contacted to provide further assistance (number on
the pre-arrival guide). The house is perfectly equipped for 12
people, and two new mattresses have been bought for cases when more
people arrive to our location. The house, dock and gazebo are painted
and maintained on a regular basis, and are in excellent condition.
The presence of lizards, frogs and other fauna in the surrounding
areas are part of the experience of being immersed in a protected
natural reserve environment, where our house is proud to be located.
We receive very positive reviews both in our guestbook and websites,
yet we appreciate when our guests indicate which areas to be improved
and take immediate action to solve them.

WAS NOT PLEASED

  • 2 of 5
We were disappointed. House was not clean. The beds were horrible. Very very hot and humid. Beach was very dirty and water too dirty to swim in. We enjoyed the hot tub because it was cool water and cooled us off. The outdoor shower in gazebo was nice but others smelled so bad couldn't use. House was full of bugs, frogs, spiders etc. could be nice place but wasn't. Cruz was nice but Juanita (cleaning) did nothing hardly at all. We love cahita area but would never stay at this place again.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments as we take feedback very seriously. Although we try our best to keep the premises pristine, in the future, feel free to contact the owners directly for immediate action (contact info found in the pre-arrival guide). We are constantly working on improving the experience for future users: Thanks to your feedback, we have provided plumbing maintenance to the showers in the first floor and applied deep cleaning throughout. Beds have been checked and linens replaced. Juanita has worked with us for over 10 years and is very trustworthy, but we will take this opportunity to retrain her and bring this to her attention so that she is more attentive and receptive.

Regarding the beach, Punta Uva is one of the most pristine beaches in Costa Rica, awarded a clean water "blue flag" award year after year. If the beach was dirty, it was probably due to heavy rains (which cause the level of the rivers that flow into the ocean to rise, bringing branches and other natural debris). The house is fully screened to prevent mosquitoes from entering the premises. The presence of monkeys, frogs and other fauna in the surrounding areas are part of the experience of being immersed in a protected natural reserve environment, where our house is proud to be located.

We receive very positive reviews both in our guestbook and websites, yet we appreciate when our guests indicate which areas to be improved and take immediate action to solve them.

AMAZING STAY

  • 5 of 5
This house is an amazing find. Punta Uva is a quiet little town just outside the hustle and bustle of Puerto Viejo. We can't recommend this house enough. The description was perfect! The beach is a short walk away, the rooms were in spotless condition and the location was just perfect. Cruz, the groundskeeper was an amazing host, he even brought over a wheelbarrow full of coconuts for us to drink around the jacuzzi! The jets were working in the jacuzzi although the hot water wasn't working, it wasn't a problem though with the gorgeous weather. The outside gazebo couldn't have been more perfect for our group of 12. A great place to stay and a great deal. Can't recommend it enough!

The property is conveniently located close to the main road that connects Punta Uva and Puerto Viejo. The house is surrounded by gardens and a beautiful canal/river that runs through the north side of the property and can be viewed from the terrace and most views from the house. The property connects directly with the beach through a private trail (2 minute walk). A spacious gazebo, ideal for group lunches/dinners, parties and barbecues, is located next to the house. An outdoors Jacuzzi (for 8 to 10 people) is located next to the gazebo. There is a volleyball court close the gazebo as well. Overall, there is plenty of space, beautiful gardens and great social areas where to enjoy with friends and family.

Punta Uva Beach includes a beautiful peninsula crowded with lush tropical rain forests, white sand beaches and miles of palm trees. Since the river connects with the beach, you can enjoy kayak and boat trips as you explore the river and ocean
