We love the Finger Lakes Region in general and Lamoka Lake is ideal because it is quieter than the bigger lakes yet you can take a boat directly to Waneta through the channel if you want something different. The public island is a nice place to swim or picnic or pick wild blueberries. The water here is more shallow so it warms up nicely and there are no zebra mussels (razor clams) so you can just walk in barefoot.
The wildlife is spectacular. We like to wake up in the morning and see a heron on the dock or a bald eagle flying overhead. Osprey and kingfishers are quite common. The carp try to beach themselves foraging for food in our shallow areas by the rasberry bushes. My favorite time is at night by the bonfire listening to bullfrogs. I like to look out over the lake where we barely see another light or a house. The stars are nice in August; no light pollution. Every now and then the sound of a fox or pack of coyotes in the distance reminds you that you really are outdoors.
