The first thing people usually say after arriving at the Posada Colonial is that 'The pictures don't do it justice'. We are confident from our reviews that you, your family and your friends will feel the same way.
We are central, yet secluded, with patios, balconies and grounds looking on to the world famous Arenal Volcano. This Almendro home has a wrap-around balcony, is gated and very private. We have WI-fi, cable and Sky TV, indoor and outdoor dining with flowers, birds and butterflies everywhere. It is a natural paradise.
We are near the charming town of La Fortuna, and our area is famous for its diversity of interests. These include bird watching, river rafting, jungle cruises, jungle canopy tours, butterfly farms, horseback riding, world famous spas and hot springs or relaxing and enjoying the best views of the spectacular Arenal Volcano. And because we are well located on the main road, all is within easy access. We encourage everyone who is planning on visiting to read the reviews of our home to help determine your decision for your visit to this lovely part of the world.
We have been a Bed and Breakfast for about 15 years, with excellent reviews in the guide books, Our housekeeper/cook Miriam is local, friendly, helpful and has developed a great reputation for her breakfasts, which you can read about in the reviews. She is the soul of the place.
Security: Although the property is on the main road, with easy access to all the local attractions, it is gated, fenced, on a partial rise, and thus very safe and private. The newly formed 'tourist police' make regular checks with all the property owners.
Beginning in the new year (2015) we will also be looking at long term rentals
I'm a Canadian who came here in 1993 for a combination of adventure and investment. I built a home in La Palma overlooking Arenal Volcano, and because of the shortage of places for people to stay gradually became involved in tourism. It has been a wonderful experience meeting people from all over the world. When it comes to the wonders of nature, everyone reacts in a similar way. Awe, respect, wonder and delight.
Grant Carlson purchased this house in 1995
When I decided on Costa Rica as a place to live in and invest I knew very little about the country, apart from its positive reputation. It was only later that I realized I needed a 'where' in Costa Rica. After driving around the country for a week or so I arrived in La Fortuna and immediately knew that this was where I wanted to be. It was something I still can't explain. I built the home, which eventually evolved into a B and B, about two years after arriving. I drove a fifth wheel down here from Vancouver and lived in that until my home was complete.
The Nicaraguan and Costa Rican people Ive become friends with over the years have enhanced my life immeasurably. As well. the climate, the greenery, fresh air, the birds and, of course, the volcano, all serve to make this area a very special place in the world.
Two friends and I recently visited Arenal and stayed at this wonderful home just outside of La Fortuna. We had a great time, mostly because of the wonderful hospitality of the owner and his staff. The home itself is beautiful with wonderful views of the volcano and rainforest. Grant went out of his way to help us plan our stay: he helped set up various excursions and provided great recommendations on things to do. Miriam cooked amazing breakfasts every morning, and we couldn't have asked for more. It made everything so easy. If I ever return to Arenal, I will certainly want to stay here again!
Recommended for:Families with young children, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, pet owners, age 55+.
As soon as you enter the property you will see lush tropical flowers and plants surrounding the house. If you are looking for an authentic experience this is the place for you. You will you wake up to views of the volcano which are simply amazing. Mireya is an amazing host and was very attentive, she helped us to book two tours. One of the tours (ATV's) was so much fun and the staff were great. Miriam had breakfast prepared for us every morning and it was delicious, absolutely no complaints. Having breakfast served on this beautiful property every morning with views of the volcano was definitely one of the highlights of our stay. Unfortunately the rooms do not have AC, so if you dont mind you will enjoy the house. The property is located within a few minutes of many hot springs and other activities. It's a hidden gem and would definitely come back!
My first trip to a tropical country and I couldn't have had a better introduction. The trip from the airport via shuttle worked perfectly. The house is magnificent. We were welcomed by both Miriam and Mireya who are wonderful people. They patiently put up with our attempts at speaking Spanish. The famous breakfasts by Miriam lived up to their reputation. Mireya was endlessly helpful. We saw wonderful birds during the day and stars at night. My only complaint was that the volcano kept herself well covered in clouds. We had a wonderful time and I wish we could have stayed longer.
We spent four nights at the house, and couldn't have been happier with our choice! Mireya was very helpful, and even called around to get information about a guided hike we were interested in. Miriam made an absolutely delicious breakfast each morning, and we decided after the first day to leave our whole morning open to enjoy it out on the back patio while watching all the beautiful birds. We saw a great amount of wildlife right from the deck and back patio (lots of small birds, hummingbirds, toucans, howler monkeys, etc - Miriam is a good spotter).
The house had WIFI that worked great (unfortunately had to do some work remotely while I was there) and it supported Internet calls without any issue. The outdoor space of this house is fantastic - large wrap-around balcony upstairs and beautiful patio with a large table downstairs. We spent all our time at the house outside unless we were sleeping (even when it was raining). Bedrooms are on different floors which provided lots of space for people to spread out, and we even got to catch part of the NFL conference finals on the TV.
The house is centrally located and getting to everything was very easy. We went to different hot springs each evening, and Eco-Termales was our favorite (only about a 3-4 minute drive from the house). We did the Hanging Bridges guided tour which was great, but beware if you have a fear of heights or suspension bridges that swing about while you are on them. The Arenal Oasis Night Walk was great, and we saw five different frogs, insects and an eyelash viper. We also hiked the trail at Arenal 1968, and while it rained most of the time that we were there, the clouds totally cleared while we were at the peak viewing spot of this trail and we saw the volcano in all it's glory for the only time during our trip.
Grant was very responsive and answered all the questions we had, and the ladies at the house were wonderful. We hope to make it back there some day. Until then...
Thouroughly enjoyed our stay at Grant's CR home. The location, the service, and the beauty exceeded our expectations.
My family enjoy our stay at this amazing place!
Easy to find, very spacious and most importantly it's surrounded by all greens and nice people. The onsite lady is very friendly and supportive and prepare us the breakfast every morning.
The food she cooks is so yummy that one day, a raccoon visited us. My young kids were thrilled to see the animal.
Definitely the best value in town, highly recommended!
We loved the property and the "rain forest" backyard, surrounded by beautiful flower bushes, tropical fruit trees, colorful birds and butterflies, even hummingbirds. We saw an interesting animal - Coati walking by in one morning. Excellent view of the Volcano Arenal from the porch while we enjoyed the Costa Rican coffee and delicious home made breakfast. It was truly a feel in the tropical heaven. You don't really need to travel to various Volcano viewing spot. This property gives the best viewing angle.
The house is in between Tabacon Hot Spring and La Fortuna. It is conveniently located within a short driving distance to almost every activity this area can offer, including zipline, lake water sports, volcano hiking, butterfly observatory, hot springs, waterfall, grocery, and restaurants. And yet, the location gives a healthy distance from the crowd that you can easily enjoy your privacy.
One of the highlights of our stay is the meal we had. Miriam came to cook breakfast for us every morning, from western style to local specialties. I never knew the combination of the rice and bean can be so delicious. It couldn't be any better to start a morning with the freshly cut tropical fruit platter. We loved her cooking so much that we asked her to cook a dinner for us in one of the nights. I can tell she put a lot of thoughts to it and designed a wonderful full course dinner for us. Even Mireya came to help preparing. They did such an excellent job. That dinner was one of the best meals we had in the entire trip. Thank you Miriam and Mireya.
We stayed for 3 nights, had a wonderful time, and wish it can be longer. I highly recommend this place and certainly will come back again.
The area has many famous natural springs heated underground by the Volcano, and is also famous for its birds and other wild life, and its easy access to rain forests, Lake Arenal is the largest lake in Costa Rica and just a few minutes away by car.and is known for world famous rafting and wind surfing Of course there are canopy tours, horse rentals to the famous La Fortuna waterfall (and other areas as well). It's very easy to fill in an entire week enjoying all the natural activities in the area without doing the same thing twice.
