Overview

Sayulita House Rental Photos and Description

Private Beachfront House, 5 Bedrooms including Living Room, 4.5 Baths, Sleeps 12

Set amid palm trees at the edge of a white sand beach flecked with gold, stands a gracious Mexican villa with a broad shaded veranda, offering an unobstructed view of the warm Pacific Ocean only steps away.

This grand hacienda is private and peaceful, within walking distance of the center of the charming village of Sayulita. Complete with housekeeper at no additional charge and the option of having a private cook prepare meals at your request for a nominal fee, this is the perfect vacation home for a luxurious but uncomplicated beachside holiday. The villa consists of a main house with 2 master bedrooms, a living room (which can be configured as a 5th bedroom), a dining room and a large fully equipped kitchen, plus a separate 'casita', or guest house, just a few steps across the small courtyard, consisting of 2 non-connected bedrooms.

The waves are often gentle enough for leisurely swims right in front of the villa, because of the smooth sandy bottom in our choice location. However, because on other parts of the beach, the ocean bottom changes to cobblestones, we are fortunate to have within sight of the house, two surf breaks that have some of the best and most consistently ride able waves along Mexico's Pacific Gold Coast. Down the beach, about 7 houses south of our villa, is the fast and exciting, left hand surf break. The more forgiving and fun, right hand break, which was the site of the Mexican National Surf Contest, is only a short stroll beyond that. Sayulita is becoming internationally known as an excellent spot for the experienced surfer as well as an ideal place for those eager to learn.

MASTER BEDROOM #1 features a king-sized bed with a carved stone headboard, an exceptionally spacious bathroom and a fabulous view of the ocean including the surf break.

MASTER BEDROOM #2 is even bigger than Master #1. It has its own private entrance, private bathroom and also has the option of being connected by a common door to Master Bedroom #1. It is spacious enough to easily accommodate a king sized bed and two other single beds. It can alternately be provided with 4 single beds. It is light and airy and like all the bedrooms, it has a fabulous view of the ocean. Master Bedroom #2 has built in Air Conditioning.

The HIDEAWAY BEDROOM has its own separate entrance, and it normally comes with two single beds which can be configured as a king if requested. It also has a toilet in an alcove of the room behind a shell curtain and a hot water sink “ensuite”. Its window provides a view of the ocean, shaded by mature tropical trees. Because of its situation, this room is ideal for teenagers or others seeking privacy.

The upstairs EAGLES NEST BEDROOM was originally designed as an artists’ studio by the owners. It is accessed by an outdoor stairway covered with hand painted Mexican tiles. The Eagles Nest has unmatched views of the ocean and jungle as it is the only bedroom which has some windows facing in all 4 directions. This spacious, light filled, room comes furnished with a king sized bed to provide a very romantic and very private nest with a sweeping view of the beach and jungle below. The room is ample enough that, as an alternative, it can easily accommodate a king and 2 single beds or 4 single beds if arrangements are made in advance. This art studio/bedroom now contains its own brand new bathroom, with toilet, shower, glass sink and granite countertop. All bedrooms have ceiling fans, plus this bedroom and Master Bedroom #2 both have built in Air Conditioning.

BEDROOM #5: Because the spacious living room is a mirror image of Master Bedroom #1, and it too has an exceptionally large bathroom of it’s own, it can be used as 5th Bedroom, with single or king bed, if specifically requested. Guests generally use the broad shaded veranda as their living room and dining room, because the weather is usually so inviting that everyone wants to spend as much time as possible on the veranda with the beach spread out before them only steps away.

On the beach, close enough to easily stroll into the center of town yet just far enough to be private quiet and peaceful. We can see both surf breaks from the house and easily walk right to them. We are on the desirable north side of Sayulita, but we don't need to climb any hills and we are still so close to the restaurants and shops and surf breaks, that we don't need to get in car to easily participate in everything the town has to offer. There are many great restaurants in Sayulita and we have a large, fully equipped kitchen, so sometimes we take advantage of the fact that we can hire our sweet and trusted housekeeper Delia to cook us an authentic Mexican meal for a very reasonable price.

About Richard Harkness

Be sure to click on 'Hybrid' view on the map below. For many years I was an editor of motion pictures and television in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. My wife is a fine artist/painter who grew up outside of New York City and spent her summers at their beach house on the Jersey Shore. My wife's family are Canadians who live all across Canada from Montreal to the Canadian Rockies to British Columbia. Our daughter Heather grew up in California, loves to swim and now that we have a house on the beach in Mexico, she became fluent in Spanish and she even does a little surfing.

Richard Harkness purchased this house in 2001

Why Richard Harkness chose Sayulita

Although we have traveled all over the world to places like Bali, Hawaii, Guatemala, Europe, El Salvador, Canada, both coasts of the USA and many places in Mexico, we didn't get to Sayulita until 2000. It was the perfect little fishing village that we had been looking for, where the food is good, the local people are friendly, it's a quick easy flight from the USA, and it was the prettiest curve of beach we had ever seen. By 2001 we went back to buy a vacation home and found this perfect house right on the beach. My wife Sharon loved the classic hacienda style of the house and all the elegant antiques that came with it. My daughter Heather loved the fact that it was right on a soft sand beach where she could swim and play, and I loved that I could see two fabulous surf breaks that I could stroll down the beach to surf, within sight of the house. Less than a year after we purchased it, we loved it so much that we decided to live there full time, which we did for a year and a half to seize the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the culture, learn Spanish, and really get to enjoy this fabulous spot. We now live in Santa Barbara and visit the warm tropical waters of Sayulita as often as we can, but since we can't be there year round, we like being able to share it's pleasures with others.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Richard , just a late note to let you know that everything at the house went great during our stay. Delia was very helpful. As you said, the location is fantastic and town is convenient. The whole family had a wonderful time and we are hoping we get another chance next year.

Wonderful week!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 spent a week at Casa Aguila in March 2015. The location is fabulous, right on the beach, away from the town noise but close enough for an easy walk to the restaurants and surf spots.

The new keyless locks worked well and we had no worries about hanging onto keys when we went out.

We were very conscious of security as the house is located beside a public beach access. We kept all our valuables, phones, etc. locked up in the safes at all times and locked the house even when we were on the beach in front of the house. Just extra cautious and we had no problems.

The spacious porch was fabulous for relaxing and enjoying the sight and sound of the surf. Delia made us a lovely dinner one evening which we enjoyed outside.

Casa Aguila is a comfortable and clean house with lots of room for a group. It is not fancy or modern but has a classic and welcoming ambiance. A great place in Sayulita! Our family had a wonderful time and we highly recommend this property.

Coco

  • 5 of 5

We had three generations of our family staying here for two weeks including a 2 year old and 4 year old. It was for my 60 th birthday. Happy Birthday to me!

The house is amazing and we loved everything. The kids (30 year olds) surfed everyday and was within an easy walk. We enjoyed also walking to town which took ten minutes. Richard was so helpful in recommending things for us. The housekeeper Delia was adorable and cooked us an amazing dinner one night. There is so much to do and see in the darling town of Sayulita.

Our family never experienced any problems with anything including having things taken. We were mindful and always locked valuables in safe and locked the house when we left.

Please know this is a premier spot to stay right on the ocean and you are lucky to have found it! Use the safes and locks and you will have no problems. Enjoy!!!

Family of Five Fun

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our family of young men (20's). The security issues that the last group experienced were not a problem. There are cameras at doors and safes for any valuables, which we did use at all times. I did not feel at all unsafe personally, and knowing I could lock things up was important. The location of the house on the beach was great for a short walk to town or nice beach walks. We spent most of our time on the veranda outside which was pleasant and wonderful when we were there. Mostly we did dive, surf and fish! Had a great time.

Amazing house for families!

  • 5 of 5

This house was so amazing, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else upon our next visit to Sayulita. The house comfortably accommodated our family of four (including our children ages 5 and 7) and another family of four with similar aged children. The location in the quiet north end of town was perfect, and it was delightful to be able to walk to the beach in seconds each morning. The location is so beautiful, that one couple got married in front of the house during our stay! We could easily walk to town in ten minutes, but were far enough from the partying that occurs in the central part of town that this is the ideal family location. Every night we enjoyed walking two houses down the beach to the local turtle rescue operation to release baby turtles into the ocean. Richard took great care of us by providing detailed information on life in Sayulita. I've read the previous reviews, but I disagree--I felt very safe at the house. Each bedroom has a combination safe for valuables, and access to the house and the eagles nest bedroom (which is accessible by an outdoor stairwell) was protected both by a combination lock system and video cameras. The house comes with a lovely kitchen, dining room and living room as well as a lovely outdoor eating/relaxing area on the porch by the beach. Although we rarely used the living room as the view was so beautiful that we typically sat outside, we were delighted to find games and books as well as a piano in the living room. The lovely woman who cleaned the house also cooked a couple of delicious dinners for our families. Overall, we had an amazing vacation at this beautiful beach front house.

A very disappointing experience.

  • 1 of 5

I was excited for our week in Sayulita and the beach house. The pictures and description were great, our experience was not. The location is accurately described, but the house isn’t as nice as the pictures make it look. In particular, it feels dark and dreary inside. I agree with the description that you will use the veranda as your living room, because it actually isn't very pleasant in the living room/common area. It’s just not as nice or light and bright as the pictures made it look. I was in the “hideaway bedroom” which also was disappointing. There is a reason there is no picture of it on VRBO! It has one window, so it was dark and for whatever reason, the ceiling fan didn’t help with ventilation, so it was always very stuffy.

The other disturbing thing about our experience is what was going on while we were there. Apparently, the week before we stayed there a break-in and robbery occurred. The owner’s response, without consulting us, was to bring in a mainly unsupervised crew to work on the house. They were adding security cameras, building walls to secure safes, etc… Good ideas, but not at our expense. We suffered through noise, dust, etc until we decided it was better to leave the house for most of the day -only to find it still going on until evening.

Finally, on our last night in the house, we were robbed as well! Our friend was staying in the Eagles nest and lost everything in his room but his clothes. The owner’s tepid response was shameful. And apparently all the security apparatus, such as the new Video Surveillance didn’t actually work where the break-in occurred.

All of what happened to us was completely avoidable by the owner, he simply chose to disregard our safety and showed no concern for our experience.

Owner's Response: The video surveillance cameras did work. They showed the thief’s face clearly. As a result, the police caught the thief, he confessed, and he is in jail. In total regard for the safety of our guests, as owner, I flew down to Mexico specifically to install exterior security cameras and to have built, small, end table sized steel reinforced boxes to encase the safes that we provide. The robbery could indeed have been completely avoided if this one guest had not then ignored our requests to always lock his valuables in the safe, that is conveniently provided in each bedroom. He instead chose to leave his laptop and his iPhone and his go-pro camera, not locked up, but instead, temptingly out in plain sight from the windows. The video on VRBO.com and HomeAway.com show the interior of every room in the house, beginning with the Hideaway Bedroom as the first room shown. The solid wood shutters can be closed for privacy at any time and thus are occasionally used by guests at night, but for some reason, the members of this group chose to completely close the solid wood shutters blocking all natural light into the center of the house all during the day, so that of course it remained uncharacteristically dark inside in the daytime. Because this guest was likely too embarrassed to tell his fellow surfing buddies, that unlike them, he alone had not bothered to use his safe, they apparently felt sorry for him and chose to write 4 separate reviews in a row, saying the worst things that they could think of, perhaps hoping get the owner to pay them a bribe to retract their negative reviews. Thankfully, potential renters can plainly see for themselves, that those 4 reviews (all from the same week) are the only negative reviews we have ever received, in the 14 years that we have been successfully renting to overwhelmingly satisfied guests. It is a testament to the quality of the experience of guest after guest, that all reviews before and since this single week, have all been purely positive, with no negative incidents to report of any kind.

Paradise at a Cost

  • 2 of 5

First, I’d like to say that this has the ability to be an amazing property, and it may be well on its way. However, this was at the expense of our annual surf trip in late January. While Richard is a very nice guy, and loves to be involved with his property, the fact that there were people at the house from mid-morning until sunset every day was, in a word, problematic. I’d argue that we were taken advantage of due to our good nature as paying guests in Richard’s house.

While I can understand the need for a caretaker to play a small role in welcoming VRBOers to a property, our vacation really suffered, as all of us felt uncomfortable being at the house, because it was not, for us, the oasis that it could have been. Beyond the fact that there were workers all over the grounds, those workers had constant access, when we there there and out, to our bedrooms, the kitchen, etc. This lax security resulted in one of my companions having his laptop, phone, and iPad stolen.

Without a doubt, this is a beautiful property and Sayulita is an amazing place, but, if renting in the future, please make sure that you will have the place to yourself while you’re there. If I had been traveling with my wife and daughter, and not a group of guys, I would have found the conditions totally intolerable.

Owner's Response: Because quality vacation rental properties all provide housekeepers gardeners and maintenance workers for free, as part of the rental, it makes me wonder about the logic and motivation of the statement: “those workers had constant access, when we there there and out, to our bedrooms, the kitchen, etc. This lax security resulted in one of my companions having his laptop, phone, and iPad stolen.” It echoes a similarly illogical assumption and untrue accusation by the previous reviewer which said: “The result of the construction workers having access was that my friend had all of his electronics stolen from his locked room.” Nothing was stolen while workers had access to the house. The break in occurred long after all workers were gone, while the guests went into town for a late dinner. The workers are never given the lock combination. My trusted housekeeper, who has worked for me at this house for 14 years, is the only person to know the new combination, thus she needed to come to unlock the doors for our workers, not only to maintain her high standards of security, but specifically to also protect them from such potential accusations by guests. All my workers could plainly see that I had recently installed security cameras, to record any potential thief, so it would make no sense for my workers, or anyone else they knew, to return to try to break in. The police discovered that the thief lives in a distant town, and he is seen on the video trying unsuccessfully to saw into the new high security keypad locks, using a hacksaw blade that he brought with him to the house, thus it is obvious that no one had told him the combination to the door locks. Therefore, it is clearly not the result of the workers having access. If it were not for the one guest, who was staying upstairs, to have carelessly left his electronics out in plain sight of the windows, instead of securely locked in the safe, as all guests were specifically advised to do, then the thief would not have been tempted to use extraordinary means to bend open the wrought iron on his windows to get at the valuables, and all of this could have been avoided. It seems that perhaps these friends were not informed at the time by their friend, that he had surprisingly not followed the instructions to lock up his valuables as they had done, and so they rallied to support him with their negative reviews, but even after they were informed of the full facts they declined to withdraw their misleading reviews.

Our property has very broad beach frontage, right on the sand. We are situated a good distance from our neighbors on either side and are fortunate to have a large grove of mature coco palms and manicured lawn as the neighboring property behind us. The sandy ocean bottom right in front of our house makes it a safer place to swim than practically anywhere along the entire beach, except, right in front of the town restaurants, only a short walk away. When sitting on our shaded veranda, one can feel very private and privileged and serene and yet the blue Pacific is invitingly close just a few steps away.
