Spent over three weeks at Nessie's Place and really enjoyed my stay. This house is definitely a bargain for the area, which explains the four-star rating (a higher price who lead to a two to three-star rating from me).
As previous reviewers mentioned, the best thing about this place is its owner, Mike or Loch, not sure about his real name, but I called him Mike throughout our stay and he didn't complain, so here I'll call him Mike. Mike is an amazingly helpful and easy-going guy, very generous too: he gave us an avocado, oranges and even mixed greens grown by a friend of his. Plus, he is really hard working and keeps his backyard beautiful. There is a kalamansi tree in the back (like a small orangy lime - great in cocktails!) and, while we were there, there was lots of kale, mizuna and aragula that Mike himself had grown and that we could pick anytime we wished.
Second best thing about the house is its location: a scenic one-mile walk uphill from the ocean and the heart of Paia village, along a well-maintained sidewalk that makes walking safe (make sure you have a flashlight with you at night though).
The house itself is quite spacious and has two full bathrooms and three bedrooms. The place was pretty clean when we got there (except for the freezer that was obviously missed by the cleaners - had to clean that ourselves) and the beds were comfortable, although one of the beds is actually a foam pad on a futon base (but still quite comfortable with a comforter over it, under the fitted sheet). We found that the futon in the living room was not comfortable at all to sit on though. There is an ancient TV in the living room, the remote did not work for it, we just watched it once and had to change the channels and operate the volume directly on the TV - no big deal.
A recent reviewer pointed out that the barbecue was too old - well I'm happy to report that Mike bought a brand new barbecue during our stay and it worked flawlessly for us. Also, there is a washer and dryer outside and they were both working great and came in very handy. All in all, a great stay!
The only suggestions I would have for improvement would be:
- A reliable timer for the hot water tank - we ended coming back from the beach to a cold shower on several occasions, and even though Mike asked us to let him know when there was no hot water, by the time you're out of the shower to let him know, you've already had your (cold) shower; and
- Hooks and towel bars in the bathrooms.
We were two families from Scandinavia sharing this house for 4 weeks. My wife and I have an infant (9 month) and the other family have 2 children (5 & 7 years old).
- In the bedrooms there were no curtains, so in the evenings it's free insight and in the morning you will be awakened by the sun.
- The grill is very poor condition.
- In two of the bedrooms were few shelves, so it is a bit tricky to unpack and store clothes anywhere.
- The master bedroom is very warm during warm days, and also during the nights. This is not a big problem for adults, but for our baby some of the first nights were quite tuff. During days with “normal” temperature this is not a problem.
- The house was not professional cleaned at arrival. (I have a feeling that we Scandinavians have high expectations/requirements regarding the cleaning, but still.)
- The most positive is the house owner, a very friendly, nice and helpful guy, who is easy to get hold off. (He knows the island well and all the famous surfers on Maui)
- The location is very good, with walking distance to Paia. If you surf, this is the area you want to stay in.
- The garden is small but nice.
- “honest images” on the web site. The house looks just like the pictures.
- The owner grow lettuce in the garden, where we could to take as much we wanted.
- Parking space for two mini vans in front of the house (maybe even a third car could fit)
- The Price, of course.
As I wrote the owner is very helpful, for example when we had requests for things such as more shelves the owner arranged a temporary but great solution same day in one of the rooms.
I have been in contacted with the owner after our stay and he will buy a new grill and he is going to hire professional cleaners between customer check-ins, which I think will make a big difference. That together with curtains in the bedrooms will lift the rating.
My family has stayed here on 3 trips. Our young kids LOVE it. There is great space inside and outside to bring grandparents, hang out and cook, and totally escape 'resort world'. The location is primo for watersports, biking, yoga and all the food and fun that comes with Paia. The Owner is Loch-- he is your neighbor to help w/ questions and fun to hang out with too. This is our favorite place and the best value on Maui.
As I write this, I am still here in Nessie's Place, but I just have to review about what a great stay it's been. Loch, the owner is a fantastic soul with a knack for making you feel really at home, and setting up Nessie's place to feel like your home on Maui. The beds are comfy, the crosswinds through the big spacious windows is cool and tranquil, and everyone has plenty of space to hang out or to rest a part from all the fun things to do in Maui. The kitchen is well stocked with anything you could need to prepare a luscious Hawaiian dinner and Mana Foods, the world's best natural food market is just down the street for all your grocery shopping pleasures! The showers work great, washer and dryer on site, free fast Wi-Fi (although you will only need it to upload all your pics from your amazing day on the beach), and located conveniently to EVERYTHING. Loch lives on sight and is easy to get a hold of if you need anything, and since he is a local, he knows all the answers to any of your questions while you vacation. My girlfriends and I highly want to recommend this special space to you, as you will not be dissapointed, but will want to come back to Nessie's again and again!
Some other tips for your trip:
Shop at Mana and get stuff for breakfast, and save money eating out at lunch and dinner.
Be sure to go to Cafe De Amis for crepes and Tahitian Poisson Cru.
Be sure to go to Flatbread for Gluten-free pizza with local ingredients.
Visit Haiku just up the road for some Maui Kombucha and Hawaiian Toast...don't ask, just get it and you will adore it.
Take a day and spend it at Makena beach but watch for "the vortex". You'll know what I mean when you have no trouble getting into the ocean, but watch your friends laugh at you as you try to get out.
Contact Miranda of Maui Mana Adventures for the SUP adventure of a lifetime. I paddled with whales, you could too! Best money you will ever spend. Period.
After you visit Makena, eat at Pita Paradise in Wailea. They bring fresh Big Eye Ahi Tuna in that day and slice it up. I've never had fish so fresh!
That's it! You will love Nessie's Place, and you will love Maui. Tell Loch "the mermaid" sent you!;)
There is nothing bad I can say about this place. the 3 bedroom in the house were very spacious as same with the living room and dining room. Everything that you need in a kitchen were there and available and good working order. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and good water pressure and fans throughout. The beds were also very comfortable. The owner was nothing but friendly and helpful and had a help your self vegie patch as well which was great for breakfast. The outdoor area was a great size with a BBQ and plenty of shade. This place was just perfect for us. The town itself is a beautiful little hippie town with great restaurants, shops and surrounding beaches. Paia was close to everything I will be returning in the near future.
We stayed at Nessie's place for a week and really enjoyed our stay here. The house is a little bit of a walk from the adorable town of Paia, but if you don't mind exercise this will not be a problem for you. The house was comfortable and clean, and the owner,Loch, was super friendly and helpful with anything we needed.
We too had an ant problem, but hey it's Hawaii and ants are a problem here. Loch was really apologetic about the ants and said he would take car of it right away! We will definitely stay here again!
