We had the distinct pleasure of spending a week in this little cottage, a small paradise with a spectacular hostess. The property is beautiful, well maintained and quiet. Within a couple of minutes you are lounging on an expansive beach, almost by yourself, listening to the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
The cottage is well maintained, organized and very cosy. Everything you need is there and if it isn't, Rosie will do her best to get it for you. Rosie is a very interesting and fascinating woman who was so helpful and accomodating, even beyond the call of duty...
The cottage is located at the south end of the island in a nice quiet neighborhood. As is the norm, we had a golf cart rented which allowed us to come and go as we pleased.
We strongly recommend at stay at the Mermaid Retreat and take time to chat with Rosie. She is an amazing woman and we loved our week with her.
Rosie, Thank you again for your help, your compassion and your stories. Miss you,

We have stayed at Mermaid's Retreat for several years, and plan on returning next year. We love the vibe of the cottage, the privacy of the property and its location over the dune from the beach. For us it's part of the experience of what Harbour Island is, and Rosie bends over backwards to be accommodating. She always has a bottle of wine and a package of good strong coffee waiting for us. (This year she even left gluten free chips and lactose free milk for me - really thoughtful!) The cottage is decorated in good taste with a lovely collection of bottles and shells, and the porch is a great spot for relaxing and having breakfast or lunch. Rosie's dogs help to deter any suspicious activity, and our daughter particularly enjoys going over to Rosie's house on the far side of the property to visit her kitty's. It's always a happy stay!
We're just home, after two memorable weeks on Harbour Island in Mermaid’s Retreat! This was our sixth stay in Mermaid’s Retreat, a two ensuite bedroom, well-appointed, and cozy cottage with a porch; and, we’ve already booked it for 2015, for what will be our seventh straight stay!
Mermaid’s Retreat, located on a private, protected, carefully-maintained tropical property, is only a stone’s throw from the walkable, pink sandy beach and gently rolling waves. We'd heartily recommend this charming, well-situated cottage, where you can hear the surf and feel the ocean’s breezes, as a perfect choice. And, to top it off, Rosie Mitchell, the owner, is the best – an absolutely amazing woman!
My wife and I had an amazing experience staying for eight days in "Mermaid's Cottage". We are both artists and travel the world in search of inspirational content to draw from for our paintings, writings and sculptures. We arrived to a fine bottle of champagne on ice that Rosie had purchased in town as a welcome gift from me to my wife. She also created several of her own stunning floral arrangements that were placed throughout "Mermaid's Cottage." Each and every day delivered a bit of magic for us to experience. The cottage was wonderful to set up our studio in and we were creating pastel paintings of Rosie's seashells and bottles within hours after we arrived. Everything about our experience was delightful. We took long walks on the beach. Rosie outfitted us with beach chairs, a beach umbrella, and large beach towels for our daily use. She arranged a wonderful beach cart rental that was waiting for us next to the cottage when we arrived. We had thousands of dollars of very expensive camera equipment with us laying about both inside and outside Mermaid's Cottage for our entire stay and never had any type of issue regarding theft or misconduct. The beach was stunning. We spent everyday there with the most amazing clouds, waves, and colors of the water changing as the sun danced in and out of the clouds. We spent at least four hours a day at the beach. This is one of the great beaches in the world as it is always highlighted in upscale travel magazines in the top ten. Inside the cottage was charming. We cooked a lot in the kitchen that had everything and more to create fine culinary dishes. We were quite comfortable with the air conditioners keeping the cottage very comfortable when we used them. Rosie was a wealth of knowledge when we inquired about the history of Harbour Island. She even gave us a beautiful book written about her father who was a great adventurer and sailor in the Bahamas. Rosie also helped us find a school to donate art supplies to. I would highly recommend Mermaid's Cottage if you want to have an interesting life experience and a great vacation. We will be back for sure.
We booked “Mermaid’s Retreat” in Harbour Island Bahamas for 6 nights and left after 2. The owner lives next door, and as we checked in she explained that both of the bathroom sink faucets were “loose.” They were in fact about to fall off (they appeared to have been that way for a long time). She then said "there's lots of electrical issues,” but that “we wouldn't be using the air conditioners anyway." I was quickly becoming concerned about what we were actually getting versus what is advertised on VRBO. The lighting in the main room was poor, and the living room furniture was not comfortable. The house is on well water and is brown colored and salty, so the showers don’t get you clean.
It took us a couple of days to realize all of the other things that were actually wrong with the house. The microwave didn't work, one of the eyes on the oven didn't work (the owner said that had been broken for years and was “impossible” to fix – really?). The washing machine that is advertised is actually in the owner’s house, not in the cottage we rented. There’s no AC in the living room, so when we cooked it became very hot in the main room. The windows (the only source of cooling) don’t stay open by themselves, so you have to prop them open with a bottle, which is not a problem as old bottles are a primary décor of the house. The air conditioner in one of the bedrooms did not work, and therefore it was very difficult for to sleep. The owner offered a fan to make up for that…
The beach that you can walk to is covered with trash and seaweed (no one ever cleans it, unlike the Pink Beach resorts). The grass around the house had not been mowed in a long time and was about knee high.
So, after two miserable nights we told the owner we were leaving. While we were moving out, someone stole the cash from my wife's wallet (about $400), just after I had paid the owner in cash. We suspected the owner’s painters (no one else was around and we never saw any people whatsoever) but the owner defended her painters instead of her customers who have been robbed. We reported it to the police, so we spent a whole day moving out and then meeting with the police – not the vacation we were planning.
Frankly, I see no way people have enjoyed staying in this cottage as described in the other reviews, and I regret that I relied on them in choosing this cottage. We moved to a resort which cost more, but worth every penny of it. I would never think of renting this cottage again.
Rosie's cottage is lovely. It is clean, freshly painted and fully equipped. There is a large and private yard that is well maintained and lush in plantings. But it is the beach just up over the dune that makes this house truly remarkable. There is no water view, but the sounds of the surf fill the air, and the stars are amazing. The cottage is a short cart ride to town, where we found terrific local restaurants on the water and luxury resorts with ambitious menus. Our strategy when not cooking at home was simple: lunch on the beach, dinner on the bay and it was such fun! Thanks Rosie, for such a wonderful week!
