Villa Bendicion is uniquely situated on a cliff offering a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and the surf. Bendicion is the Spanish word for blessing. We feel blessed to stay in such a place surrounded by natural beauty. The large terrace and gazebo offer many opportunities to enjoy the day with the sea and sky as a constant companion. I have a special home made chair in the corner of the terrace where I have my morning beverage and contemplate the surf conditions.
El Zonte beach, is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. Sheer cliffs border a 3 kilometer beach. Rock formations rise out of the powdery volcanic sand. At low tide discover tiny sea creatures among the rocks and swim in tidal pools, at high tide swim in a saltwater pool that overflows with the incoming waves.

Paola and I met at sunset on El Zonte beach in 2001. Her grandfather built one of the original homes in El Zonte in the late 50's. Her family visited the beach almost every weekend. Originally from Virginia, I first surfed in El Zonte in 1995 and bought my first home there in 2000. Paola is a theater actor and I am a visual artist. We have two daughters.
The Owner purchased this villa in 2005
For me, El Zonte means childhood memories. I have the opportunity of having my children enjoy it as much as I did. The house is well located in El Salvador map. We are close enough to San Salvador to enjoy the entertainment dining and art, but far enough to feel the serenity of the beach. The colonial towns of Ataco and Apaneca can be reached by car in a little over an hour as well. Mike traveled a lot through south and Central America and when he came to El Zonte he found the right place for him in its unique, quiet and beautiful scenery.
Our house was designed for relaxation and entertainment. Last year we added lighting mosaic tile, and an underwater bench to our pool. The bench facilitates enjoying the pool with our girls while they learn to swim. We love seafood, grilling a big Red Snapper by the pool, eating fresh oysters brought out from in front of our property, and making ceviche. Our terraces and gazebo are large enough and separate enough to hold group and private activities simultaneously. Often, when we are entertaining, someone is sleeping in the hammock while another group socializes, and someone else meditates or reads at the gazebo.
Two friends and I just returned from staying at Casa Bendicion for a week and absolutely loved it. Mike and his family are great hosts and can set you up with whatever you need...a ride to and from the airport, a cook, trips to the market, a massage, and local knowledge of places to eat and surf. The weather was perfect and the water was warm. The waves were fun and the locals were all very friendly. We enjoyed making the short walk from the house to the town of El Zonte to eat, shop, surf, etc. We never felt unsafe at all. In fact, it was quite the opposite. We found the locals to be incredibly friendly and helpful. I sustained a small cut on my head while surfing (out of my own carelessness) and when I walked up the beach w/ a bleeding head a small army of locals sprang into action getting me a wet towel, bandages, ice and making sure I made it to the house safely. I was so impressed. I highly recommend Mike's place for anyone looking to get away and just relax. The pool is perfect for cooling off and having AC in each of the rooms made it so comfortable for sleeping. Back in the cold waters of California I am missing this place more than ever and can't wait to get back. We'll be seeing you soon, Caballo. Thanks again for an awesome trip.
While El Salvador is still a bit "3rd world" Villa Bendicion is nothing short of first class. The owner Mike and his family go above and beyond to ensure your stay is the best ever. The property is absolutely stunning, safe, and very well taken care of. The small town of Zonte is a short walk yet just far enough away that you can hear anything at night from town. The amenities and full kitchen at the house make you feel like your at your own home away from home. We cooked most evenings and enjoyed the cooler night time air on the patios and watched the BEAUTIFUL thunder and lightning storms that would pass through.
If your looking to get away from it all but close enough to restaurants and other things this is the property for you.
Truly looking forward to going back!
We had a group of 4, house had everything we needed and then some. Location was excellent, on the less populated side of the beach. I had quite a few mornings on the beach with just me and a couple of dogs. Friendly town with just enough services to be comfortable, but not so many to draw crowds.
We just returned from a wonderful stay in El Zonte, and we can't wait to go back! My husband and I travelled with our 2 year old son. We found the home a great stay for our family- lots of wonderful outdoor space and the convenience of having a kitchen for our little guy. The house and location are even more picturesque than the photos. We enjoyed early mornings watching the surf and having a leisurely breakfast, days at the beach and swimming in the pool, afternoons relaxing with a drink in El Zonte and watching a local soccer game on the beach, wonderful dinners of fresh seafood prepared by a fabulous cook that Mike arranged, and evenings being lulled to sleep by the crashing of the waves. This was our first trip using vrbo.com and we were so pleased. Mike and Paola were so gracious and helpful. And we loved visiting with them, their daughters and pets. We fell in love with El Salvador and will visit again!
My family of 4 spent 12 nghts at this property. It was absolutely relaxing and beautiful. The view was spectacular, the pounding sound of the waves relentless, and the house itself quite comfortable with lots of room. Definitely room for 6. Having Mike and Paola and their beautiful daughters on site made our stay more enjoyable. Although our Spanish is adequate, Mike was incredibly helpful with getting a rental car, water, directions, advice and even picked us up at the airport.
We definitely enjoyed and needed the amazing A/C as the nights were hot. The power was out in the area 3 times during our stay and having the cool inside shower and the pool was helpful in cooling down for bed. It never did get hot in the inside shower and we often used the outside showers which got incredibly hot! The beds were clean and comfortable.
Oneida the "cook-for-hire" and "housecleaner" was pleasant. Be aware that you need to ask her to clean anything other than the kitchen. The three meals she cooked for us were tasty, and her cleaning up the kitchen was a real treat.
My favorite things: the sunsets, the gazebo, the pool.
Be aware there is no wi-fi, and Mike had a USB drive containing internet that plugs into a laptop, which fortunately, my teenager brought.
Also, we were hoping for a stereo, or some entertainment at night--especially with the kids (15 and 9). It got dark by 6:30-7 and then we stayed home so as to not be out much at night. We ate out only a couple of time in the town and, although sometimes tasty, usually regretted it. Next time, we would bring games.
Definitely a surfer's paradise!!! It was great to see Mike living his dream!! We are beginners and the ocean got VERY big (mid March), so we could only go in the water for the first 1/2 of our trip. Down the road in El Tunco, a town emerging with youth culture and young surfers, the waves were a bit easier, although still fast and powerful. We watched some amazing surfing and boogie boarding.
We adventured up and down the coastline and enjoyed many secluded, pristine beaches and then would spend the next day resting on the property and exploring the local El Zonte village and beach.
I didn't see any bad guys, only felt sketched out a couple of times in Libertad, and got the feeling it is a well-armed country. Overall, the people of El Salvador were kind, gentle, gracious and peaceful.
6 of us had a fantastic fall trip in El Zonte. The only thing that out matched the accommodation and location was the wonderful family that owns and runs this property. The combination of friendliness, comfort and location was perfect! This rental is suited for a huge variety of travellers (surfers, families, friends, young and old). We will be back for sure.
Thanks for the perfect holiday
