Canathus Cottage is close to many activities; it is the perfect point of departure, in a picture-perfect location, for all of your interests. When you arrive, get yourselves acclimated to the amenities. The upper deck overlooking the lake is a great spot to watch the sunrise light up the bluff across the lake. Should it be chilly, bring your coffee indoors to the kitchen. It has a large window to see the lake and a propane fireplace to instantly remove that chill. Bring your boat for your favorite on the water activities or rent one from nearby. Canathus Cottage has a permanent dock as well as a boat lift to keep your boat out of the water and secure for times when it is idle. Enjoy the fun of our pedal boat, catch that lunker off the dock, or simply float around in the sun. Keuka Lake is in the heart of Finger Lakes’ winemaking; check out the wineries close by. Follow the Keuka Lake Wine Trail map to destinations across the lake. Plan a lake tour to see the sights and partake in the wine tasting available at most wineries. Buy your favorites and bring them back to the cottage to enhance your Keuka experience. Plan your travels from brochures available at Canathus Cottage. You can bike the many trails, like the Outlet Trail that parallels the only outlet of a Finger Lake that empties into another lake. This was a major source of power for mills, a canal to Seneca Lake, and a railroad that later replaced the canal. The Adirondack chairs on the dock offer a quiet spot to read or just watch the activity on the Lake. In the evening, sit and watch the sunset or come back later to gaze at the stars and the Milky Way. If the evening gets chilly, set up chairs around the fire pit, sing camp songs, make somemores. Keep your eyes peeled for the Keuka Lake monster that prowls the lake at night. Canathus Cottage is situated in a small bay that keeps it protected from most high winds and waves. Say hi to our neighbors and appreciate East Lake Road. It avoids the high speed traffic on Rte 54, so you can feel comfortable about walks. You will meet many friendly people doing the same. If the weather ever is uninviting, spend some time indoors putting together puzzles, playing cards, or planning your next day.Bowling, go-carts, farmers’ market? It’s all here. Because both of us spent time in lake cottages as we grew up, it seemed natural that we would start a family tradition of our own. Finding the right lake was not as difficult as we thought. Good friends had a cottage on the Bluff at Keuka Lake, not far from our siblings and the cottages we enjoyed. We get the beauty and fun of the lake and the small feel from the Finger Lakes. Just what we have dreamed about!
We have always enjoyed sunsets, so we sought a location on the east side of the lake, not far from friends already on the lake. We haven’t seen the Milky Way for many years. The lights of the city don’t obscure the stars and the Milky Way is ours again.
We also love having so many fun things to do nearby. Between of of the wineries, the hiking trails to explore, local shops to visit, the fresh produce and farmers markets it is difficult to decide what to do each day!
We are located in a small bay that protects the cottage from wind and waves. Fishing from the dock is gratifying and the Adirondack chairs are pleasantly comfortable. The old portion of East Lake Road is traveled by few so walking on the road harkens to quieter times gone by. Canathus Cottage has air conditioning for the warmest weather, heat for the cold times, and a propane fireplace that lets you turn on the charm when you want it. The boat lift is a perfect place to keep your boat safe, while the pedal boat is always available. Keep reading for our version of Juno and the garden of Canathus. You will agree that this is the spot for rejuvenation. We know that you’ll be back.
Why name it Canathus Cottage?
In 1891, William Whitfield built 'Juno', the largest and most influential sailing scow ever to sail on Keuka Lake; it remained so for 22 years. We have endeavored to honor the importance of this yacht by using references to Juno at our cottage.
Juno, or Hera in classical Greek mythology, was the sister of Poseidon. Juno inherited her grandmother's garden, which contained the spring named Canthus and was tended by Poseidon's daughters, the Naiades. All of these are references to water and so to Keuka Lake. Each year, Juno returned to Canathus, where she was rejuvenated at the spring.
Please enjoy your stay at our home, knowing that you are in good mythological hands. We know that you will return home refreshed and will return again to start the rejuvenation process anew.
