Having went to high school together who would have known years down the road we would marry our best friend and enjoy living life together each day while enjoying God's blessings.
John & Melissa Heiss purchased this cottage in 2010
We had always dreamed of one day buying a lake home but never thought we would have a place south of where we lived. Everyone always imagines their up north vacation spot and yet we travel down south. We bought the place to enjoy life and create family memories while being able to bless others with an opportunity to enjoy what we love so much about this place. When we first saw the home it had exactly what we were looking for. A small cabin, great lake, and fun setting. We didn’t want an old rustic cabin and didn’t want to be packed in next to our neighbors like so many homes.
I think so many of the unique benefits I have already covered but the biggest benefit when you rent the cottage is you don’t get another rental but our cottage. A place that's main business isn’t to rent and make a profit but to create a place where you will enjoy your time away and have an opportunity to meet us face to face at check in not a management company.
My friends and I took a long weekend trip to the Treetop Cottage during March 2015 and had a wonderful time! We didn't use the dock or spend any time on the lake (as it was still frozen), but there was plenty to do! We spent a lot of time in the hot tub which was perfect in the slightly chilly weather. If you're planning on using the hot tub, definitely bring flip flops! It's a short walk around the house over a stone/dirt path to get to it, and if you attempt it barefoot your feet (and therefore the tub) will get dirty. We had a small issue with the hot tub at first, but after a quick call to John we had it fixed! John was extremely helpful and accommodating both leading up to and during our stay. I would certainly rent from him again.
The cabin itself has had some nice updates. The bedrooms were a little small, but there was plenty of living space to make up for it. We spent a lot of time in the TV room on the very comfy couches :) The beds were comfortable as well. We loved how many windows there are to look out on the trees. There are three or four other homes near the cottage, and the only negative part of staying here in the winter/spring is that the lack of leaves on the trees does create a slight loss of privacy.
We did a lot of our own cooking and the kitchen had everything we needed! We especially loved the gas stove. The fridge and freezer had plenty of room for our groceries, and it was a quick five or ten minute drive to the Village Market in Gobles if we needed anything. We also took a day trip to South Haven on Lake Michigan, and we highly recommend it. It is an adorable tourist town and Van Buren State Park is nearby with beautiful views of the lake. Some of the South Haven shops are closed in the winter, but we still enjoyed window shopping and dining there. It was about a 40 minute drive from the cottage.
Overall, we had an amazing time staying here, and I would recommend it to anyone! We will be looking into returning in the summer so we can have some fun on the lake.
If you need to get away and can really appreicate nature, this is for you! First, the upkeep of this cottage is beautiful! It was CLEAN, lots of room, the firpit and seating outside was so cozy and comfortable. The hot tub was relaxing and easy to manage. What I appreciated most was the first morning when I opened my eyes...there are so many windows and all you can see was trees and greenery! It is so beautiful and relaxing, and just what the doctor ordered.
It was a girls weekend for us so lots of long talks by the fire and we even cozied up to a movie! The beds are so comfortable also.
It was a bit tricky to find the place but that expericence made it that much more cool. There is a really short walk to the water. We had wine on the little pier, had a relaxing short kayake ride and watched the sun set.
It can be so scary for both parties when it comes to home rentals- to invest in a home that strangers are staying and plan a getaway in a strangers home. But this place is truly a gem. So if you truly want to getaway, appreciate nature and feel safe at the same time, this is your place.
Dont forget to bring your own firewood for the firepit, and go before it gets dark!
Monica and Family!
My boyfriend and I took a 4 day trip and stayed here. The cottage is clean, updated and very welcoming. We LOVED the king sized bed, very cozy and we slept well every night.
We liked the proximity to all things, and we took mini tours of several towns within an hours drive most days. The cottage really is secluded and it was very peaceful. We loved that they literally had everything we could have needed for a stay, although the grill was very dirty and we never did end up cooking in the kitchen. It was nice to have a washer and dryer available had we needed it. The TV/DVD was also a great addition, as was the wifi. It was hard to get logged in at first, but after we had no issues and it was helpful because we spent a lot of time researching local activities and planning our days.
We weren't a fan of the amount of bugs (being in the woods will do that), the trek to the lake (it seemed really far and was hard to find even with the map the owners provided), and the lack of communication with the owners. We knew we would be in the woods, and expected bugs. But, they were SO bad. We couldn't even enjoy the hot tub for more than 10 minutes because they are so bad. The map to the lake was a bit difficult to navigate and we got lost a couple of times before we actually found what we "think" was the dock that belonged to this property. It was also hard to each the owners, we would e-mail and go days with no reply and they didn't send any kind of confirmation immediately prior to our arrival. I knew my CC had been charged for the stay, but I would have appreciated some kind of contact from them to let me know they had us scheduled for arrival, etc. After we reached out, the owner did send a detailed list of directions and we are so thankful because we would have missed it and been lost for sure, otherwise!
All in all it was a wonderful trip and we would definitely recommend the Treetops to anyone who wants a great stay!
My wife and I stayed at the cottage from June 14-21. It was so beautiful and peaceful. There were so many cool things about our stay I decided to make notes while we were there, so I wouldn’t forget them!
Starting outside the cabin, the patio was beautiful, had newer comfy furniture to sit at for relaxing, or around the fire pit. The gurgling fountain helped complete the peacefulness. The 2 wrought iron table and chair sets were nice for dining outside. We used the 2 man kayak during the weekdays when there was very little activity on the lake. The sunset views from the shore were fabulous! The newer gas grill worked perfectly. You can purchase firewood at the Village market, or at the Shell station in Gobles.
Inside, the cottage is plenty spacious. There are 2 different sitting rooms, with comfortable, clean couches and chairs. The kitchen is fully equipped. There is filtered water at the sink, very nice touch! The master bedroom has windows on two sides, when you open the blinds, you are actually up in the middle of the trees, what a nice view to wake up to!
Other highlights about the inside are...electrical outlets everywhere, two fire places, ipod port for stereo, Blu-ray player, large HD TV, good family DVDs, dish network, secure wireless internet, gas range, large walk-in closet in MB, with ironing board, washer and dryer, beautiful hardwood floors.
Things to do while staying....
Dining...Findley’s American Grill, Ostemo, near intersection of 131 and 43. We ate there on our way in. Excellent! Gallagher’s Eatery & Pub, Pawpaw, across the street from St. Julian and Warner wineries. We ate outside on the patio overlooking the Pawpaw river. Great food!
Robin’s nest Between Pawpaw and Gobles. Family diner. Good prices, daily specials. Village Market is a full service grocery. No need to find a Walmart!
Attractions....Kalamazoo Nature Center. Lots of good trails in thick woods, along brooks and the Kalamazoo river. Great for kids.
Felt Mansion just north of Saugatuck. 1920’s summer home of inventor of the comptometer (early calculator). They have a concert series in the summer on the lawn.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park. At parking lot for Felt Mansion there is a 1 mile trail through thick woods that takes you to Lake Michigan beach and dunes. Very private especially during the weekdays.
Excellent shopping and dining in South Haven and Saugatuck.
Kal-Haven trail. Access at Gobles or a short walk from cottage. Great for hiking or biking!
The cottage was everything I could have asked for. The setting is peaceful and serene, as you are in the woods, but can see the lake and it's only a short 200 yards before you are sitting on the dock enjoying the lake. The owners have done a fabulous job remodeling this cottage. It is quaint but has all the modern luxuries you could want including soft sheets and comforters, jetted tub, large hdtv and blue ray player, and great wifi connection. The hot tub looks like it's brand new and the patio and fire pit made for a great place to enjoy dinner and relaxing. The AC worked like a charm, and the peacefulness of the setting made this a great stay. I think I only saw one other person during my 3 days, and I only saw them once.
John and Melissa were so easy to work with and quickly responded to any questions I had.
We had a great time at the Treetop Cottage. The house was warm and cozy. It was perfect for our family of three. My teenage daughter loved how she had places where she could go off on her own and read, read, read.
The house is in a beautiful location. We were at the cottage the day after Christmas and we arrived to a decorated Christmas tree and snow falling most of the day. It couldn't have been prettier.
We love the outdoors and the cottage is very close to the Kal-Haven trail. In the winter we were able to cross-country ski along the trail. We hope to come back in the summer and bike to Lake Michigan and Kalamazoo.
I've already recommended the property to friends. We'd love to come back.
Gobles is a small town located in Southwest Michigan and the heart of Pure Michigan. Located less than 30 minutes from South Haven and Lake Michigan perfect for a scenic drive to enjoy all the area has to offer. We are located about 1 ½ miles from Kal-Haven Trails. The 33 mile former railroad bed has a limestone/slag surface. Linking the city of South Haven to the city of Kalamazoo the trail crosses over bridges, passes through small towns and by points of historical interest. Whether you enjoy biking, hiking, cross country ski, or snowmobiling Kal-Haven Trails is a great time. If you enjoy Food come visit The Grill House. Located in Allegan, MI only 10 minutes away enjoy Travel Channel’s own 101 tastiest places to chow down. Known for their great steaks and Grill room a must to stop at while you are in the area. If Steak isn’t your choice enjoy many local restaurants where the food is as good as the small town service. In the summers sit and relax by the lake or do some fishing but in the winter enjoy a day of cross country skiing or go visit Timber Ridge Ski resort only 7 ½ miles away. Now for my favorite time of the year the Fall time! You have to love southwest Michigan in the fall from the apple cider to crisp leaves you will want to breath deep and relax by the fire pit outside or for the cooler nights enjoy a dip in our Hot Tub or dry out by the fireplace. So take in all southwest Michigan has to offer and come visit us at our treetop cottage.
