November 2014/15 Fall Post Hurricane Odile NEWS
We have just returned from our November 2014 Sampaguita Opening/Maintenance and this year Hurricane Odile clean up trip to the Baja. I cannot believe what the people of the Baja have accomplished in less than 2 months! The Marina District of Cabo San Lucas is alive again, although some stores have yet to re open in Puerto Paraiso Mall. The centre of San José del Cabo is beautiful and peaceful as always with the recovery effort erasing the signs of the hurricane day by day. Every week additional hotels re open on the Los Cabos Tourist Corridor.
We were so lucky with our Villa and the Sampaguita property. The Villa is as before the hurricane, and the property and mixed tropical/desert landscape has come a long way back. A comparison of the outlook from our terazzo before and after is particularly telling of how fortunate we were in Sampaguita Villa 6, as it appears there is little difference except for a few missing mature palm trees. The pools have a full compliment of new equipment and are fully operational again. The endless beach is as pristine as ever, but missing the odd palapa. Full recovery on the Baja will not doubt take some time, but the experience for most tourists will be as incredible as ever.
We ate at all our favourite restaurants after the days work and met many owners working on recoveries of their own. The Baja people are so friendly, open and willing to discuss their personal experiences during Hurricane Odile and with the recovery to date. Many experienced so much worse than we did and yet so many are working so hard and still have smiles on their faces!
Everything is ready for the new season in the land of never-ending sun and margaritas! We want to thank our many repeat and new friends/visitors for sharing Villa 6 and treating it as their home on the Baja this past year. It was a terrific new experience for us to have several guests stay for shorter periods to enjoying fishing trips and destination weddings.
We have enhanced the ambiance of the villa with some traditional, updated and new wall pieces including an original oil painting 'Four' by local artist Ivan Guaderrama in the living room. We have new curtains with blackouts in the second bedroom and a new lighted ceiling fan. We truly hope everyone enjoys the ongoing improvements.
More new stores and restaurants continue to be constructed along the hotel boulevard. For a truly once in a lifetime experience, the newest Cabo Dolphins eco-dolphin aquatic centre is only 2 blocks away.
Our two storey 3-bedroom/2-bathroom Mexican Villa is centrally air-conditioned and offers over 1,719 sq. ft., including a private patio living space that is only 75 steps to the beach. Sampaguita is an exclusive security gated community of 14 quiet beachfront homes. Amenities also include a walk in open shower in the spacious upper floor master bathroom, and a private 2nd floor terrace with authentic Mexican leather equipale chairs and an ocean/beach view. The main floor offers ceiling fans in a large open concept living and dining area, Canadian satellite HDTV with a PVR (so you don't miss any sun and sand time), telephone/fax/WiFi internet, and a portable iPod stereo system for relaxing after a day on the beach.
The fully stocked kitchen includes all appliances; a new stainless steel fridge c/w 3 step water filtration system, stove/oven and microwave combination, new dishwasher, small appliances, utensils and most importantly a blender for those cool afternoon cocktails. The villa has large dining areas comfortable for 6, both inside and on the private ocean view terraza with a new Weber gas BBQ.
We have convenient back door/main entrance parking and lots of guest parking close by. The two bedrooms on the main floor share a bathroom with a large walk-in shower. The 3-bedroom home includes 1 king, 1 queen and 1 queen and 1 twin sofa bed in a roomy converted Mexican decor garage bedroom. All bedrooms have floor and/or ceiling fans for your added comfort. The main floor also has an apartment sized washer and dryer.
Well manicured grounds, that were completely re landscaped in 2013 into a mixed eco-friendly desert scape, offer beautiful tropical palms and include; 2 heated swimming pools, jacuzzi, tennis courts, a fire pit at the beach’s edge for the moonlit evenings, access to miles of white sand unspoiled beaches (Playa Hotelera), beautiful sunrises and spectacular views of the Sea of Cortez. It is not uncommon to watch manta rays skimming the waves, schools of dolphins and porpoises playing out front or whales passing by.
A full service shopping centre with food stores and one of the Baja's newest Starbucks, many restaurants and the Cabo Fitness Centre are within walking distance (5 to 15 minutes maximum). Costco, Sam’s Club, and other big box stores are only a short drive on the route to Cabo San Lucas (25-30 minutes).
The mission San José del Cabo was founded in 1730, and the quaint town of San José del Cabo offers varied and exquisite local cuisine, a vibrant and engaging art community and a peaceful and relaxing historic village atmosphere. The centre of San José del Cabo is a 30+ minute walk or US$7 (70 MXN Pesos) cab ride from Sampaguita. In other words, our villa is centrally located in the main hotel area and on the Playa Hotelera (Hotel Beach) like all the major hotels.
In contrast, Cabo San Lucas offers well-known names and tourist attractions such as, the famous Land’s End Arch, crafts shopping on the Marina stroll or at the upscale Puerto Paraiso mall (which includes a luxury shopping wing extraordinaire), sea doo’s, deep sea fishing, punta and water taxi boat tours to Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach), tequila and all the Medano Beach Mexican parties and entertainment you could want. Between Cabo and San Jose, known as Los Cabos or the tourist Corridor, are secluded beaches and snorkeling spots, several world class golf courses and adventure activities such as zip lines and dune buggies in the desert foothills.

My wife and I grew up between the North Shore mountains of beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and the Pacific Ocean's Howe Sound. Our young family was fortunate enough to enjoy many years and happy memories on the beaches of Maui. In 1996, my father and his wife began our Mexican Baja adventure by staying in the quaint town of San José del Cabo. A walk on the long Playa Hotelera on the Sea of Cortez led to a new Mexican Villa. Ever since our family has enjoyed what I refer to as the Kaanapali of Mexico - Los Cabos - stretching from the bustling centre of Cabo San Lucas along the lush tourist corridor to quiet San José del Cabo. Our extended family vacation of grandparents, parents, and 12 year old was a complete success during the week prior to Easter. We knew we wanted to stay in the quieter, more "Mexican" town of San Jose del Cabo, as we have visited Baja numerous times. Sampaguita 6 was perfect for us. From our first contact with Garfield, to our final goodbye to Frank, the experience was PERFECT. The villa was beautiful, perfectly located, and convenient to everything. We shopped at Mega almost daily - only two blocks away - and barbecued whole fish and steak on the giant barbeque on our patio. Tip: take your rolling suitcase, check it at the entry desk, and wheel your groceries the two blocks home. We took the local buses into town on days when we went in more than once. The walk into town was actually a treat, and not difficult for any of us. We rented a car at a nearby dealer, and drove to Todo Santos, Cabo San Lucas, and Cabo Pulmo (our favorite). We walked to the estuary, enjoyed many nearby restaurants, and strolled the almost empty beach. We swam in the large pool, sat by the fire ring and drank wine under the stars, and met some of the friendly residents of Sampaguita. With only 14 villas, the compound felt private and exclusive. During our week there, we never came upon another residence that seemed anywhere as nice.
Our family very much enjoyed our one week stay. Such a relaxing and peaceful experience with activities nearby if you were so inclined, plus easy access to groceries and restaurants. The town of San Jose del Cabo is still recovering from hurricane Odile and appreciates the tourists who do make the trip, as their livelihood depends on them. The villa was well stocked with the supplies necessary for entertaining and playing, and meeting with the unit manager was stress free. We would highly recommend it!
We spent 5 nights at Sampaguita 6 to recharge from a brutal 4 month work session. We were so pleased with this rental in San Jose that we wished we could stay for 2 weeks. We found it to be even better than it was described in the ad. The pool area and gardens were well kept and provided a great view of the beach and ocean. We will definitley be returning to stay for longer. what a beautiful place and very helpful manager. We have been traveling to many different resort locations in Mexico and the Caribbean, staying primarily at all inclusives, and our recent stay at this property has instantly become one of our favorites. It is "low density", with a small, quiet, complex. Beautifully maintained grounds right on the beach, and a very convenient location. The pictures of the villa are accurate, but it is hard to capture the overall beauty of the place. Everything is in excellent shape and in working order. We had read a review about the central air not working properly, but it worked perfectly. With the low humidity, combined with cool evenings, it was wonderful leave the air off, open the windows and listen to the waves come crashing in!
San Jose del Cabo is a jem, and hopefully will remain so for years.
This was our 3rd time back, enjoy the setting, close proximity to shopping, restaurants.
It is quiet and has all the things you need to have a great vacation. I am sure we will be returning again.
The location of this Villa was fantastic! The villa itself needed some repairs. The AC was less than acceptable with 2 days of none at all. We sprung a leak in the water system. The reaction to this was excellent... AC not so much.The third bedroom is actually the garage with no air conditioning. I think that this was misrepresented. Frank the manager was pleasant and very helpful. Our stay was not a disaster just lacked a little. Thus my average rating. I think that with some upgrades and mechanical improvements this would be a Fantastic place to stay. The beach and pool area's are very nice. The spa didn't work but the complex management did turn on the jets but it never had heat. The area for convenience was excellent. The Mega Grocery store is a short walk away. Other restaurants nearby. Driving access to San Jose Del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas and the airport were simple with good roads.
Local soccer pitch/arena/playground close by. Mega grocery store and mall with Starbucks a two block walk. Many great restaurants (Mexican, Greek, Organic, American and Italian) within a two block radius. The Cabo Dolphins Eco Park is now open about a block away. For a truly once in a lifetime experience swim with the dolphins!
