Overview

Waikoloa Village House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Laughing Gecko Garden is a private guest suite (ohana) located in Waikoloa Village close to the Highlands Shopping Center, Golf Course and swimming pool. The ohana is part of a larger home and has it's own private entry, patio (lanai) and garden. The home is set on a double size lot and surrounded by tropical gardens. The ohana comprises a bedroom and bathroom suite with a roomy walk-in closet. On the shaded lanai are lounging chairs, small dining table & chairs, and an outdoor counter/bar area with a mini fridge, coffee maker and microwave.

The bedroom suite is furnished in a tropical style with a queen bed and flat screen TV/DVD, and opens onto the large shaded lanai. The bathroom is spacious and finished with travertine tile and hard woods.

Laughing Gecko Garden is the most affordable property in the Laughing Gecko group; just as stylish, and unbelievably good value.

Relax in your own private getaway in the heart of Waikoloa Village. Enjoy the peace and quiet but know you are just minutes away from world class golfing, beaches, resorts, shopping, restaurants and grocery store with deli. Enjoy discounted rates at the Village golf course as well as access to the Village swimming pool and tennis courts. Check the rates for the course at the Waikoloa Village web site.

Beach chairs, towels and cooler are provided. Boogie boards and snorkel gear can be rented in the Highlands Shopping Center.

The outdoor mini kitchen has a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. There is no sink or stove and no laundry. Only disposable crockery and cutlery are provided. This is for light (no cook) meals only such as continental breakfast, or salad. It's not suitable for cooking. Take-out hot and cold meals are available at the deli at the Waikoloa Village Market within walking distance. The lanai is shaded but not waterproof. If it rains, which is rare, sitting out on the lanai is not possible.

Laughing Gecko Garden is a great affordable place to stay for those who will be exploring most of the day and dining out. Think of it like a nice hotel room at about 1/5 the price. It's a comfortable place to return to to sleep. It's not a full service condo. We accept short stays. It's not suitable for longer stays. If you are looking for something fancy at a bargain price, this isn't it. This is an affordable, nice place to base yourself for a couple of days while you explore our beautiful island.

About Bookings

Ali Blackmore is a Zimbabwean who has traveled the globe, living in eight different countries over four continents. Dual careers in real estate and design have traveled with her and continue on Big Island, Hawaii where she works as a real estate Broker & designer specializing in Kohala Coast property. A lifelong real estate investor, Ali knows a good property when she sees one and bought Laughing Gecko Garden because it is one of the all-round best lots and locations in the Village. If you are visiting Big Island to look at or buy property Ali would be delighted to assist you with your search and purchase.

Bookings purchased this house in 2005

Why Bookings chose Waikoloa Village

As a Hawaii resident living and working on the Big Island I wanted to find an elegant and private home in a convenient central location. This property fits the bill. Waikoloa Village is a good central location with easy access to the resorts and beaches, Waimea, Kona and Hilo. The property location within the Village is superb. Located on a quiet cul-de-sac with attractive neighboring homes, the property is within easy walking distance of all shops, services, golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts and grocery store. Because the home sits on a double lot the property has large gardens and generous separation of space from neighbors.

What makes this house unique

As this ohana is located on the property of a private home with large gardens the setting is private, peaceful and 'far from the maddening crowd' yet convenient to everything you need. The price is unbeatable for private accomodation. This is not a house share. The ohana would best suit a single person or couple looking for a quiet getaway to retreat to after enjoying the best of recreation and dining the Kohala Coast and upcountry Waimea has to offer.

The second year we have stayed here. A well-kept yet small place located in the village and close by car to many of our favorite areas of the island. The kitchen is outdoors featuring a bbq and microwave for cooking. This place is best suited for those who don't stay at home all day. The price is great for the island and the area.

Economical!

A great price for small accomodations (perfect for a couple - no more). We used the outside "kitchen" - which worked fine (outside grill was brand new and worked great. We kept the door open at night to keep the temp cool (this worked fine as it had a good screen. The area is very quiet and we woke to the sound of birds every morning.

Owner's Response: Aloha Barb, Thank you for your review. I love the birds too! I remember the first morning I woke up in Hawaii (many years ago now) and I woke up because the birds were doing their thing. For a minute, before opening my eyes and in my half sleep, I thought I was back home in Africa. The birdsong was the same. I felt so "at home". It was such a happy moment for me. I decided there and then to stay. I hope you will have the chance to visit again. Kind regards, ali

This is definitely the place for a short stay. The pictures posted in the ad are from when the place was new. Things are looking run down and neglected. I was disappointed with the cleanliness of the suite. If a few things get fixed up this place could be so much better. I did pass on specifics about my complaints, so I hope Ali follows through. Unfortunately I would not recommend this place right now.

Owner's Response: Thank you Pat for your review. You are right, this place is best for 'short' stays and people who may want to stay longer to economize sometimes don't feel their expectations have been met. We rarely accept stays of more than a few nights for this very reason. For this very low rental rate we really are offering a nice bed & bath; the 'extras' are 'extras'. There are repeat guests visiting right now who are "so happy to be back and so glad they found this place" (direct quote from yesterday). Thank you also for your very comprehensive follow up email after your stay. This is very much appreciated, although, it's always preferable to mention any concerns right away, rather than after you have gone, so there is an opportunity to address them immediately during your stay. Our crew is right here in Waikoloa and response times to valid queries are typically very quick. I wanted to let you know we have put in a new BBQ, the spot of raised wood parquet damage caused by the prior guest has dried out to almost level (this takes time), and rain damage to the exterior cabinet will be addressed. It rarely rains in Wakoloa (our annual rainfall is app 8"), but, when it does guests should be aware there is nowhere outside to sit that will be dry. January through March are the months when there is most likely to be rain and it typically rains at night - sometimes very heavily. I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed our beautiful Big Island of Hawaii. We are truly blessed to live here and fortunate to be able to share our home with travelers. Kind regards, ali

Exactly As Advertised

Anyone who reads the very accurate VRBO description of this ohana, and then has an issue with what the property provides, has nobody to blame but himself. What you get is a clean and comfortable room in a quiet neighborhood with ample storage and functional middle-class facilities that provides excellent value for money. If you expect the Four Seasons, you've missed by about 3 seasons, but at 1/8 of the Four Seasons price, you're still way ahead.

Our one complaint was that on those occasions when it rains, a rare but not unheard-of event, the entire outdoor seating area and mini-kitchen are useless. A small roof over the door, outside counter, and barbie would be very welcome on those occasions.

If you have a late flight into Kona, or an early or late flight out, this is a fine place to spend a night or two to get in sync with your transport. Breakfast at Island Lava Java is another pleasant perk in Waikoloa Village. We enjoyed our stay, and would have no hesitation about staying there again.

Owner's Response: Aloha Judy, and thank you for your review! You hit the nail on the head squarely. Thank you too for your suggestion regarding an extended shelter in case of rain. It's true, it seems it never rains in Waikoloa, but of course it does in a hurricane! and we should have a 'plan B' for that event. Kind regards, ali

The lady in charge is nice and was available every time I contacted her. The tiny tiny room that she rent is not for couples as the people next door can hear your condo and vice versa. the outdoor furniture is nothing like the furniture advertised toilet got stuck and we constantly had maintaince traffic coming in honestly you get what you pay for and sometimes being cheap ends up costing more at the end. Summer is coming up tons of bugs that love the light room so hot and we Couldn't even leave the door open to cool the room down cause bugs ... big ones kept coming in. Don't be cheap that's why the rate of the room keeps going Down. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROPERTY TO couples. We left the next day. The lady is nice though she may have other properties with better amenities

Owner's Response: Aloha Leonila, Thank you for your review and you kind words about myself. I think there is a perfect place for everyone and this was not the right fit for you. That's why I offered you a full refund at check in. However, you assured me everything was acceptable and took occupancy. Once you have stayed for the bulk of your booked nights, if you leave a day early, it sadly does not qualify you for a refund. I'm sorry you found the refund policy disappointing; It is clearly stated in the contract. We are a zero tolerance rental unit with regards to non-legal substances and smoking inside the unit is not permitted, also clearly stated in the contract. I'm also sorry you didn't notice the screen door which can effectively allow you to leave the main door open, for cooling breezes, while keeping bugs out. It's unfortunate our ohana was not suitable for you and your boyfriend, but I hope you enjoyed the other aspects of your stay on Big Island. Kind regards, ali
