Kalanikai is a small complex with an 'old-Hawaii' feel. Located in the heart of downtown Kona, it provides conveniences not available in most condo complexes, yet in a lush Hawaiian setting. Our place is on the second floor.
Walk a block to the oldest church in the Hawaiian Islands, as well as along the sea wall, pier, and to restaurants, the farmer's market and other shopping. Walk to the Kona Inn Shopping Center and listen to Bosco the One Man band 7pm to 9pm Friday and Saturday nights. We are 4 miles from Cosco and near Walmart, Safeway, Longs, banks and the post office.
Our Kalanikai home has a full kitchen, with a breakfast bar. We have a large screened lanai that looks over the garden and resident Red Headed Cardinals. We have beach chairs, towels, coolers and some snorkel gear available. We have wireless internet. We also have a 42 inch HDTV in the living room, and an HDTV in the bedroom. There is a lovely pool and BBQ area available for dining and fun. We have a designated parking stall, just a few feet away from the stairs, assigned to our home.

We love Kailua and the Big Island of Hawaii. We bought our second home in 2003. We rented it as a long term rental for several years. At this time in our lives we are spending time at our place and sharing it with other's is a way to 'have our cake and eat it too'. We hope you will love Hawaii as much as we do and make wonderful memories at Kalankai and on the Big Island.
The condo was everything we hoped for and more. The location is convenient to town and everything that is Kona. The people are pleasant, we were there during some construction and the manager did his best to make sure noone was inconvenienced. My wife loved the pool and the cats were a welcome surprise. Would we go back, you bet! Good deal, great location.
My husband and I stayed in the condo for 9 days - it was so conveniently located close to Ali'i Drive, the beach, Queen K Hwy, shopping. We could walk just about anywhere we wanted to go to eat or shop which was wonderful! It was nice to have A/C since the week we stayed was one of the hottest on record! The A/C (window unit in the living room) did not quite make it to the front of the unit where the bedroom is, but with lots of fans throughout the unit, we managed fine. It has a nice pool area and convenient parking. There were some issues with pesty critters (sugar ants, roaches) which are not unusual in the warm humid climate but they got worse the longer we were there (probably because they knew there was a food source). The owners acknowledged this and were so nice and helpful with any issue we had - we would stay there again because they were so accommodating! It is a nice condo and we would recommend it! This condo is in a fantastic location close to Alii Drive. It is set back from the road and is very quiet.
The condo is clean and well appointed, just like in the pictures. There is a good collection of snorkel gear as well as beach towels and other toys for the great pool on site.
If I ever get a chance to go back to Kona, this is the place I'll be trying to stay!
The condo, trip, and condo owners were fabulous. Everyone at the complex was friendly too. Everything was better than anticipated. The condo had everything listed in it's description. The condo location was safe and the complex very comfortable. It's in a location that you can walk around and get to places fairly easy without a car (if you like to walk). The condo complex cat "Mouser" was an added touch. He came out to visit us everytime we were sunning by the pool. The BBQ grills were great too. Property is clean and well maintained. The complex was under construction while we were there. They are having solar panels installed. The jack hammers started at around 8am but they didn't bother us as we were always gettting ready to head out for a daily adventure. I would recommend this to all my friends and family. The condo rental price is very, very reasonable. I was surprised by the food prices at the local grocery stores but not the restaurant prices for food, as I live in a tourist area at home. I am already trying to figure out when I can get back to another relaxing vacation at this condo, this year or next! Their calendar fills up fast and I can see why. You won't regret giving this place a try.
My husband and I have been staying in properties listed on VERBO for 8 years and this is one of the best locations we have spent a week. The condo was very pleasant to stay and there was almost everything we could ask for at our finger tips. I loved the beach accessories they had for us to use, snorkel gear, the best beach chairs and umbrella we have had at any beach vacation.
The property itself was great as we walked around town we were able to look around a bit and were VERY pleased with our find. The grounds had trees and grass and the condo while close to the pool but we never heard a splash while in the condo or on the deck. The pool was often not being used so we had it to ourselves and the BBQ’s where well maintained. The only drawback was that the complex is having some work done, so you might want to ask where they are in the process. The workers started at around 6:30, this wasn’t a problem for us as we are early risers and apparently the construction is taking place in three phases and they are in phase one right now. Just something to check on, but not sure it would stop us from staying here in the least.
The complex was a 5 min walk to Ali Drive, my husband and I were able to walk down and watch the sunset each night. It was really nice! We were able to park the car and walk to dinner, breakfast and lunch and to where we rented Kayaks. It really was perfect. There was also easy access to highway out of town to get to the beaches. There was Wal-Mart or the Target close to the condo, 3-5 minute drive in opposite directions. The target was our preference as it had a better selection of food and more of what we were looking for. We also were able to walk down to the farmers market to purchase fresh produce a couple of time, it was a treat.
I would highly recommend staying at this property if you are a couple. If we had been staying with our two teenage daughters it would have been a bit cramped.
We enjoyed the condo's amenities,especially the lanai. Bruce and Bernice have decorated and upgraded the condo to take care of every need. We loved having our morning coffee and evening meals on the lanai. The Murphy bed in the living room was great for our son. The condo is conveniently located close to the pool and BBQ's. The BBQ's were not working very efficiently but the management was replacing them very soon.
Close proximity to old town and to farmers market that we took advantage of. We were there during major construction of putting on new roofs and installing solar panels so it would be unfair to talk about how quiet it was, but I can imagine that once that is taken care of it would be nice and quiet. In that respect our timing was not the best but we were out exploring the island most of the time. Bruce and Bernice's tips on where to go for dinner and beaches were spot on.
All in all we had a great time on the Big Island and would recommend it to our friends. Thank you Bruce and Bernice!
Kalanikai is located in the heart of Kailua Kona. Many of our guests come here without a car. However, if you want to take in the grandeur of the Big Island you will want to have transportation.
We are just 3-5 minutes walk from many restaurants and shops located along scenic and historic Ali'i Drive. The oldest church in the Hawaiian islands and a royal palace, now museum, are among the attractions 5 minutes walk away.
A protected small beach, suitable for young and old, is less than a 10 minute walk. Great snorkeling is accessible from this area and the site of the Ironman race start, finish, and swim are located here.
Besides snorkeling, there are a range of activities right out your door as well. They include para-sailing, jet skiing, paddle boarding, biking, and kayak and canoe paddling.
If you are not a water enthusiast there are plenty of oceanfront restaurants, lounges, bars, and parks for you to enjoy the good food, cocktails, and a sunset.
You are in the heart of some of Hawaii's rich historical grounds and sites. The oldest church in Hawaii, made of lava and corel with a beautiful Koa interior is just across the street. Kona also has one of the few royal palaces, now a museum, in Hawaii (the only State to have royal palaces) and is located next to the church. One of King Kamehameha I's favorite places, and location of his final days is on the shore of Kailua Bay. The site still holds the heiau and sacred grounds.
Spinner Dolphins put on aerial displays while you watch the sunset or paddle board in Kailua Bay. The Humpback Whales join them from December through March.
When you are ready to venture out of Kona you will find that there are so many sites to see, many withing 30 minutes drive, that you can not possibly see and do everything in a two week vacation. A few spots to hit include: numerous beaches located both north and south of Kona, historical sites that hold communities, sacred grounds, and the best observable petroglyphs in Hawaii. If you venture further away from town you can visit the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, the mountain known as Mauna Kea where the world's finest land-based telescopes peer into the clearest skies in the world, and the world's longest continuously erupting volcano, Kilauea, continues to build the Island of Hawaii. Coffee farms, rugged lava coastlines, historic Hilo town, and botanical gardens all provide many days of sightseeing and outdoor fun.
